I miss the old Kmart sporting goods departments. They sourced most of their reels from Asia, but most of them were of decent quality. Their prices were unbeatable. I liked their jigs and in-line spinners that came from Taiwan. The were cheap, but worked so well on crappies and yellow perch.
I used to enjoy going to my local Kmart back in the day. They had a huge fishing section. Too bad that particular store closed in the mid 90’s. I swear those Sportfisher in-line spinners were my go to for pond bass, crappie and panfish. I caught more with them than on almost any other lure. They caught me way more than Mepp’s in lines. Only the Creme Scoundrel caught me more bass. Their crankbaits were good too. They were made by Mister Twister and they looked identical to early Bsndits and Rapalas. I actually collect Sportfisher stuff these days for the nostalgia.
Congrats for reaching 19K subscribers. I’m proud to be one of your early ones! I have this reel Dennis. It is a solid reel. I also have a 5100 and 6100. I’ve discovered that most of these Kmart Sportfisher reels were actually made by Shakespeare. The larger reels in this series don’t have these U clips but the traditional pinion and rotor nut. I’m not fond on U clip reels but as they go this 2100 is as good as they get. Simplicity makes this a solid freshwater reel for smaller species. Glad you found this one for John and this video. I got that Ryobi Powerful No. 4 reel today and man what an impressive reel. I liked it so much I’ve already found another one. This Ryobi is as good as the Daiwa Silver Series 4000C and the Shimano MLZ 60. - Chris
My dad passed away a few months ago and I inherited his fishing rod and reel. He must have bought it as a combo because the zip tie keeping the reel on was still attached. Anyway I was wondering if you know what size line works best for this reel?
Dennis, Congrats on Subscribers...you are the great professor of fishing reel servicing/repair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, thanks! and thanks for watching - Dennis

They certainly did work and were just trade named reels from quality offshore manufacturers like Ocean City, Olympic and others
@@2ndChanceTackle, I was thinking that they looked like Olympic reels. I know they all shared similarities with my Korean made Daiwa I had back then.

Thanks Chris! I appreciate your loyalty and support - Dennis
The main gear looks exactly like ones found in Zebco Closed face reels.
I think these are made by Shakespeare, but I could be wrong. The closed face reels have a different setup -
the sad thing about buying one of these reels on ebay, etc. you can get a beautiful reel for less then the shipping costs to get it delivered
That is true. I have nice reels that I could sell there , but they are not worth the value plus the shipping and the markups to pay the eBay fees
when it comes to bails, if it ain't broke , don't fix it
Amen

8-10 pound monofilament would be best
