One of the best things that's ever happened for me as a music listener is when I decided that I was going to listen to as many different kinds of music as possible and not let my prejudices against certain genres or artists keep me from appreciating a great song. This Harry Styles single is a really good example of why that's important. The kid was put in a boy band when he was 16. That doesn't mean he can't produce something really interesting on his own as an adult. Great analysis of a really good song! Hopefully more to come from him yet.

Yesterday, I was driving with my car and was sobbing all the way home, while this song was on the radio. I would have never thought that someone from one direction could be so touching
When I first saw the art attached to the song I thought that maybe it would be something to do with the movie Harry is in that comes out later this year: Dunkirk. I would not be surprised if this track gets featured in the movie, the tones and themes seem close.

I was a 1D fan. Zayn from the jump wanted no part of the group. He always felt he had more to say and I get the almost sense of " forced maturity " in his lyrics but, it'll come off like that if you've spent 5 yrs constantly singing bubblegum pop lyrics with catchy hooks of and on with no real substance. When he left I think it made a greater impact in my opinion because on 1Ds final album as a group " Made in the AM" , the lyrical content, structure and format of songs really came together well. Harry stood out because on ballads you could really hear the energy, and emotional effort he was putting into what he was saying, you could tell he really took his time to record every song the right way, pouring his emotions out . So it's no surprise his first solo track has so much more depth than what the other boys have put out.
You do bring up a good point. Even though I don't know if Zayn is able to, I'm willing to at least wait for two more albums to see if he actually improves significantly and not just somewhat. But I guess for Niall and Louis, they aren't...really close to being as good as Harry's debut--or at least half as good regardless of the genre they're pursuing (obviously just my opinion but yeah. :p) But I mean to be fair, they are all just starting out, so I'll try to be fair enough to wait and see what their future music will be like. Arnold Drummond Zayn's a person who goes with the crowd. His music is so cliche immature and empty, I am terribly disappointed. With his voice and general goodheartedness I hope the real Zayn comes out through his music soon. He's sensitive and shy and smart and he' clearly embarrassed by it ( which is a sign of immaturity, unlike Harry who is who he is no matter how the public perceives him ) o he's trying to be some kind of tough guy which only makes him look silly and childish. But I'm sure he'll come around, 1D in the last years was not good for him, cause he was to dissimilar to the other guys and couldn't really be himself.
I've never like 1D except one song. But I can tell, Zayn can never top Harry the way it is now. Harry have a very clear vision in his musical direction since day one he announced he is doing a solo album. A very ambitious vision I might say. And it remains to be seen whether he can continue the power and poignancy on subsequent songs and especially a full-length album.
I gotta say, if the background piano during the chorus was a bit louder and the mixing was a smidge more bold this song would be straight up great, the last thing I expected was the type of good, well placed rock ballad revivalism more likely to come from Perfume Genius than Harry Styles. With that being said I'm super interested in what artistic direction Harry's going in.

People can choose how they feel about this song and how they interpret it is solemnly up to them. There's vulnerability yet mystery in the song so it shows his feeling but people can apply their story.
