I've waited years to see this. Thanks for posting this. I played keys and accordion with Levon for years and I know how much he loved this song and singing it!!!!
Kind regards from Argentina Brian, I'm a fan of Levon Helm, surely I 've heard you on Levon recordings many times. I can not imagine the pleasure of playing alongside with Levon.
What a blessing I must have been to play at that level. This is such a great song that embodies the Cajun spirit. I lived in New Orleans for 10 years and this song brings me back.
Love and miss you Bobby! It's hard to believe that you have been gone a whole year now! I truly hope that folks listen to your songs for many years to come!
Bobby was one of the very greatest 'uknowns': wrote and recorded some absolute gems and his albums (also the later ones...) are fantastic. I treasure his records: thanx for sharing!
It's puzzling why this wasn't include in the movie. It was always one of my favorites on the LP. To see Dr John playing the guitar is a big treat. I knew he played the guitar but I never seen him until this video. Have to thank my son for turning me this TH-cam thing.
Amazing video! I have never seen Dr. John on guitar anywhere. Charles was a real talent. Pity this wasn't in the movie. Wouldn't want to give some amazing talent a break when you can show the rich and famous for the 50 thousandth time.
Thanks for posting this.I could never understand why this wasn't in the movie. If it true that everthing wasn't filmed I often wonder what else was missed that magical night.Seen Levon at Massey Hall in T.O. Last night "Great" !
Bobby C. is heard but not seen in the film., but this is a great video ... love the song, and seeing Dr. John play the guitar. ... thanks for the post.
Funny thing I definately remember this being in the movie first time I saw it. Then when I revisited the film in later years it wasn't there. But hey! what a fantastic legacy of great songs he's left us
Well, I've waited 40+ years to see this footage - thanks so much for posting it! I've played the remixed track from the Complete Last Waltz set ever since I bought it, but never thought I'd see any footage of BC performing. Mind you, if Scorsese had got his way, Muddy Waters wouldn't have been in the Last Waltz concert - luckily Levon Helm put his foot down and said - No Muddy, no Levon. Good man!
Hey dolfkoeienverhuur, thanks for the response on my comment. I've done some reading on Bobby since I wrote that first comment and yes, I see how he was uncomfortable with celebrity, which makes this video (and this incredible concert) all the more special.
Levon is absolutely singing here (you can clearly see everyone look to him at right as he takes a verse at :45). He's playing drums on his kit mostly off camera (Bill Graham's cameraman must've been asleep at the wheel). That's unmistakably Richard Manuel on a SECOND set of drums over Robbie's shoulder. If you look closely, you can see Levon's hands and sticks every so often at far right behind Dr. John, most clearly at 1:36. Man ... now all I wanna do is get too loose on Toulouse Street and kiss all the Creole belles I meet. Smoke all day, eat all night, cook them mud beetles wrong until I cook 'em right.
Dear cheeseman, B.Charles never felt happy on stage. But the fact he was present here was a matter of friendship. Not a matter of bad or good. If you were a musician, you would know that rehearsing never helps against anything.
The style of the footage is consistent with the footage typically recorded by BGP at the time (Bill Graham Presents). Think Wolfgang's Vault. The B/W video footage has typically been seen of other shows from BGP. Since this show was produced by Bill Graham, its could very well be from the basement tapes. And judging by Bobby's slightly uncomfortable presence, its likely been cut rather than not filmed. (not filming any part of a live event like this would've been historically careless.)
I have one abiding memory of watching the movie in a packed cinema. As Neil Diamond came on stage so the audience rose as one and decided it was time for a piss!!! Nuff said really.
there were all kinds of technical glitches that makes the Last Waltz what it is...they missed some stuff, but not much..the crew did not realize that muddy waters was about to come on and only one camera actually films him...from a distance..thats why it looks so different from the rest of the show..you can see Dr. John soloing on guitar in this video, but you really can't hear it.....I was supposed to see Bobby Charles on two different occasions...he cancelled both shows.

For anyone wondering, this is *not* outtakes from Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz. This is footage of the same concert recorded by Bill Graham, the concert promoter, with a single black and white camera. He recorded pretty much the entire concert, including numbers such this one that Scorsese skipped. You can find all the Graham footage on wolfgangsvault.com, but it's behind a paywall now.
@ folsom37Superrrrf That would me Great. Bobby was not for LIVE stage performances he. So what Dolf did was fantastic.I made some selfmade clips of his wonderfull songs. R.I.P. Bobby
@Freakster1970 what Ive heard is he was very rarely on stage during even the prime years of his life. It says something that it was included in the soundtrack. The 2 BC stuff I own are a $1 tape of the 50s stuff I bought in the 80s-90s and the 70s bearsville cd of the album he did w/ the boys, both are excellent. The cd I bought is now only available @ amazon as a $10 download.
Sorry. I am mistaken. This song is not in the movie. I must have seen this clip a long time ago and forgotten it. I remember Bobby Charles seeming pretty unassuming, actually shy, on stage.
Music is not a contest. Neil Diamond doesn't fit, but gives the least annoying performance of his life, thanks to The Band, and Dylan...what shall I say...good or bad, it's simply not the case. It's always right from the heart. Listen to his performance of 'Hazel' in the LW, if you got the opportunity, totally awesome. Bobby Charles is here, on this beautiful footage, be happy, surely he was with it.
No offense to B. Charles at all, but did they overdub his vocals live? I only assumed they dubbed in the fiddle and doubled vocals on the actual record, but at 47-49 he doesn't seem to be singing. Though he sounds similar to Levon, Levon isn't playing drums or mandolin here, so can someone clarify this at all, or am I just seeing things that aren't there?
I guess he was shy and he does kind of look lost up there maybe thats why they left him out the film? Still what a great songwriter, and nice to see Garth strap on the accordian at the last waltz.
@indianrunner70 I don't think Levon was in this song. Richard is on drums it looks like and rick and roobie are with bobby and dr john. And of course garth is playing off to the side.
Interesting comments. I met BC in 1969 and lived with him for 3 years. I met The Band when he did. I was a guest at The Last Waltz. This clip was not in the movie and his image blotted out in the finale because Bobby refused to sign the release contact. Chat on!!!
They left Bobby Charles out of the video because they said they did not film it. So where the hell did this raw footage come from. Who ever recorded this did not have it on a tripod or stand. I highly doubt ole Martin Scorsese would allow the take to be shot unsteady. It leads me to believe that one of Charles' people must have recorded this at the Last Waltz Concert. Levon Said in an interview that Robbie horribly overdubbed all the sound footage for the movie and the Cd's.
Love and miss you Bobby! I truly hope that folks listen to your songs for many years to come!
R.I.P. Bobby Charles.
Thanks Dolf!!!!
Bedankt Dolf For sharing and as Tribute for THis GREAT singer songwriter.

1 of my singin songs since the band hit us with the last waltz. Specifically 'er especially when drinkl,,,imbidding.
Love and miss you Bobby! It's hard to believe that you have been gone a whole year now! I truly hope that folks listen to your songs for many years to come!
Bobby Charles made a Christmas video with his dog circa 1983. I have it on a VHS tape, will try to get it on You Tube.
You got that footage?!

The band gave Bobby Charles a big welcome when he came on stage, and he looked happy to be there, too.

The Dr prescribed some good time to roll in concert, many times. th-cam.com/video/P-qX_1WSn68/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bAYz-OSGRK-HMXT-

One of my favorite tunes!

+KidFidrych Then who's playing accordion
@@DavidNelsonOstrosser Garth Hudson plays accordion
Making beautiful music without trying. Love Levon.
Why, on earth, was this fabulous tune NOT inclused in the Band's fabulous 'Last Waltz'!!??
Thanks for posting this wonderful footage of Bobby What a talented songwriter! Never really got the credit he was due... rest in peace my friend.
WHAT A GREAT SONG!
this is awesome especially since, I always thought Rick was singing lead on the verse @ 1:53. It's cool seeing the Doc on guitar too.
great video, thanks for posting...RIP Bobby Charles
Wow! Thank you for posting this.

Richard Manuel switching to drums here!
The Band were one of the few groups who could swap instruments and not make it feel gimmicky. THE BEST.
this is a rare footage, do you have some more of last waltz inedit?
the first part is Levon Helm's voice!
Big up Bobby surely rocking on and on!
Roll over Doctor, Dr. John...
garth hudson and the boys awesome
@Southerntredkill I think it was Marty McFly with an iPhone who recorded it

@JokerPicturesFilms , Martin Scorese has more in the vault. Where can i find the outtakes ? im a novice

Important missing part in last waltz movie.

his voice stayed the same... "most melodious" (bob dylan)...
They left Bobby Charles out of the video because they said they did not film it. So where the hell did this raw footage come from. Who ever recorded this did not have it on a tripod or stand. @ folsom37 Thats GREAT
what more does Martin Scorese have in his vault ?
Does anyone know anything about his life?
you only hear levon...not exactly a bad thing but i heard a lot went wrong during the actual show
We're entitled to an opinion they say...But you shouldn't be...
That sounds kind of like the band with
Stop fuckin'around.
Wec need good music by good people
I don't think so. Robbie Robertson wanted Neil diamond instead of Muddy Waters in the movie.
This was vetoed by Levon, so there both in it.
Wow, no Muddy in the Waltz,!!!
I heard Bobby got got because RR wanted Neil Diamond in the movie instead.
who is playing guitar? Thats not doctor John is it?
That's The Doctor for sure!
The good Dr did not shred but he could really play that groove. th-cam.com/video/P-qX_1WSn68/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bAYz-OSGRK-HMXT-
Hi folsom37,
Please try!
Great song, but either Bobby Charles missed rehearsal or he's better with a pen than on stage.
I guess everyone knows who he is with
