15 Drawer Workshop Cabinet from reclaimed Ipe Wood

- For the last few weeks on evenings and weekends i have been working on this 15 drawer cabinet. It is made from reclaimed Ipe wood, a laminated pine panel and 9mm hardwood ply. Total cost was about £100 for the plywood, the laminated panel and the name plate holders.

I grew up in High Wycombe, then a big furniture making town. I was told that, one draw opening when another is pushed in, is the mark of a piece of furniture made by a cabinet maker, rather than just a carpenter.
My Grandad used to say "As one door closes, another one opens" Lovely bloke, crap cabinet maker : )

With it raining, the hydro will make more power allowing the large power tools to work. Hmm...it seems to all work out well.

It begs belief what people throw away. We all need re-educating on the use and reuse of of our material possession's.
It's a throw away world but it's not all bad. If you can recycle and make better what we throw away then you're life improves with the help of our neglect.

So Kris basically got bored one afternoon because he was stuck inside and made a gorgeous chest of drawers that I probably couldn't afford to buy in a shop, out of trashed tropical hardwood no less, to keep his screws tidy. Of course he did. Nice work man. Really impressed with that.

in norway we got this old history of carpenters moving around building furniture for food and a place to stay plus a little pocket money, really beutiful furniture and still standing good after 100 years. yours are the same quality and will also be standing long after we are all gone.
That looks beautiful and something I would have expected to see in places like my grandads workshop when everything wasn't just sheet metal, wire mesh or plastic
I had a friend with a huge deck on his house. He tore the deck off and threw it away because it had turned Gray and was rickety. It was cypress wood and all it needed was a little love, and it would have been enough beautiful wood I could have made furniture for an entire house. It made me sick to know it was in a landfill. All I could say was "if only I had known". Great job, and so glad you found that ipe before it was hauled off to the landfill. Regards, Solomon

I especially LOVE the contrast in situ between the beautiful precision made draws in amongst the natural wood bench with tree trunk legs. I love this quirkiness. Another heirloom made Kris xxxx
Both of your Ipe boxes look great, Kris. I guarantee that when you die, someone will take the lot and spend another lifetime using your hand tools. Not just a thrown together shop project but a real bit of legacy. Great work.
That chest seems to be out of a victorian age office or pharmacy...great!

Kris, so good to see and hear you enjoying every stage of the build! Your attitude is just as impressive as your skill set. We know editing makes all projects look easy, but your happiness shone through. So what if the drawers are too good for a workshop? You, of all people, deserve the best.
For the cabinet it is the very highest honour to be housed in this workshop.
My greatest hope is that somehow you are able to take on an apprentice - someone who can soak in your wisdom and skills.
Omg i would buy one of these and put all of my recipes in. This needs to be handed down to future generations.
An the beauty is that this cabinet will still look fantastic in 100 years!

Yeah i was surprised by that! The video isnt doing that well though unfortunately. youtube is telling me that it is number 9-10 and attracting a much smaller audience than normal. But the people watching it are liking it so thats good.

@@FruitSnacksyo Its been a pattern i have noticed from the start. the videos that take me the longest and that im the most proud of always do the worst. This video was a very high labour video. about 5-6 hours of editing, maybe 10hours of filming. it took 4 hours to upload. the item itself has 60hours of work in it. I also had to take the whole set of drawer back out and move the cabinet back on to my workbench to get a good picture of it (as i forgot while it was up there) So a video like this really dose take a lot of work. But, today we have a storm and if i grabbed the Camera and just walked up the hill and filmed my steam it would get twice the views and take me about an hour to do. TH-cam is funny like that. But im proud of this video so if it dose not do as well i dont mind. im still proud of it.

I refreshed the page this evening and your video popped up 3 videos before others that I watched last night. I know I didn't accidentally miss it. You're not wrong either though, the hydro power is popular but I do think youtube is partly the problem.

That is absolutely stunning! Everyone on Earth could use such a cabinet for something. You could be a wealthy and busy man making those alone. LoL
It's good that it was made during rainy weather. I would think the wood wouldn't swell any more than it is now, so the drawers will never stick. If they do, a little beeswax will fix that.😊🐝❤
And I think I will agree Kris...you're one he'll of an out of the box thinker, builder, craftsman, and visionary!

Thats a beautiful piece of furniture, you should build small pieces of furniture, like sets of drawers, book cases, etc. And go to the likes of carboot sales and markets. People love that, and would pay good money, for your work. Well done kris. 👍🏻
To make this again out of brought wood, plus making time, plus time at the sale this would have to go for 400-600. People at markets and carboots just don't want to spend a fraction of that.
Probably low balled a fair bit there if you include consumables and hardware.

I've had some success minimizing tear out on plywood by having a scrap piece of wood behind our cut. Keep up the good work.
It was spectacular, a sad wood was reborn into something beautiful, almost an alchemy process
It's a real pleasure watching you take such care in making. TH-cam is full of woodworkers making drawers and very few take the trouble the make proper joints. Many people would give such a lovely piece pride of place in their homes (I’d love one!)

If you keep making this sort of stuff we will all be wanting lots of rainy days! I loved this video as you showed how you did every step and optimised your design to show off the best wood whilst reserving the plywood for the interior of the drawers.

That cabinet is truly A Work of Art, it's Beautiful. It very much looks like a period piece.
This is the first time I think I've seen Ipe Wood. What incredible wood, it looks like a very hard wood, and the natural dark color is incredible as well. It's sad that people throw wood , especially wood like that, away. I'm very happy you rescued it from the skip and gave it a new life.
I've always loved old wooden boxes and cabinets. I have one here on my desk. It's an old Workmans Portable Tool Box with 4 drawers and a space below for big tools. The drawers are more for chisels, drivers, wrenches, etc. The outside corners all have a heavy brass corner protector that also doubles as feet on the bottom. Sadly it's missing the front cover, which had a key lock embedded in the door, which used to be dropped into the bottom of the cabinet, then swung shut from the bottom and locked. It has an old tough piece of leather with home made rings making a handle on the top. I saved it from the side of the road about 2 years ago, it was out to be thrown in the back of a garbage truck and crushed. I'm guessing it's about 100 - 150 years old. It's a total beauty, and all of it's dings and dents give it so much character and tell the story of how it was used, most likely by a tradesman, maybe a carpenter. It's totally a keeper!!!!
That's one of the reasons why I greatly enjoy watching your videos, because you love the traditional wood working ways and actually know how to do it, and you do it so well. I was completely admiring the tooth work you cut into all the joints, totally beautiful! My Tradesmans Tool Box is made the exact same way. And for the size of it, it weighs about 3 times what it should when you look at it. Definitely an old hard wood of somekind.

Kris, I've cut a lot of plywood with veneer and I've learned that the best way to avoid chipping the veneer is to sandwich the good piece of wood between two scrap pieces. And sandwich then tightly so the veneer can't go anywhere.

I've probably learnt more about wood working from your videos than I ever did in wood working classes at school, but we didn't have any wood to work in wood working classes, or metal to work in metal work, we shared books in English and watched experiments in chemistry and biology thanks to the slashed funding under Thatcher.
Hi Kris - you should hallmark the things you make and perhaps inc when, where and what was used. Someday years down the line, future generations may see these on antiques roadshow or bargain hunt!

Masterful creation and fascinating to watch, your running explainations are much nicer to have than common crafting videos with just background noise and subs. Seems like you had about 100 pieces of wood to cut and arrange perfectly. We are lucky your shoulder has made some time for projects like this :)

that's a piece of art
I live in tropics and people often discard the amazing lumber just because it is rough sawn and looks creepy on the surface. after few passes on the jointer it looks like treasure, and they would surely want it back.
I often hunt for such construction used lumber being thrown as scrap once used for some house renovation projects. of course I have to use neodymium magnets and metal detectors otherwise I would damage my helical spiral cutter heads in no time.

As super project Chris, well done. You are lucky to repurpose such a beautiful tropical wood. Tip - make the back of the drawer 1/4" lower than the sides and front, this way it allows the air behind the drawer to flow over the drawer back into the drawer space and out of the front instead of the drawer acting like a piston. ;-)

Outstanding rustic drawer cabinet, making great use of a precious resource and it was free... That's a great price.
It may look out of place at the moment, but I can see once there are a few more similar style units dotted around it will all come together.
