Ann Savage plays Vera in Detour. Her meanness is the twin to Tierney’s twisted madness. The coldest and darkest hearts, even worse than Phyllis!
On Criterion, Short Cuts and The Graduate immediately spring to mind when I think of quintessentially California films. Kiss Me Deadly follows them. These are total classics to me like Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce and Paris Texas. I was lucky to see Mildred Pierce again at the cinema last year and was completely absorbed by it, so assured in how to tell its story that I fell right into it. Made by master crafts people at their peek.
An overlooked gem is Thieves Highway, a San Francisco set noir, with the great Lee J. Cobb and Richard Conte.
Thanks for highlighting some true classics.

@@codyinthecinema Cobb was great in so many films. I recently watched him in Day of the Owl which was put out on blu ray by Radiance UK. There’s a really good half hour extra on it devoted to him, looking back over his career and just how superlative he was and the range he had. Also, The Man who Cheated Himself (love that title) is another SF noir with him as lead this time, well worth a look if you’re interested in lesser known noirs. But Thieves Highway is a superior film, it being on Criterion and all.

Two films which I really like and they are, Shall We Say.. California Stuff. Firstly :Vertigo. I really was with this film with which I began.. Wanting to visit California - Endeed the first thing I did while I was in San Francisco was visiting the place where Kim Novak jumps into the Ocean ( Without, in my case, jumping into the cold waters).. And the other film which I believe catch "California" very well indeed, it's Liquorice Pizza.. Film that I really like and my opinion was underrated by the critics. Have a great Weekend and Greetings from Spain
