    That's hilarious that Tony Kaye and Chris Squire switched instruments for this video. I've never noticed that before. Haha. No wonder the organ parts didn't match what the hands were doing. And love Tony trying to funk finger the bass. So funny.

    And by the way, that is Steve Howe in the video, because the real guitarist on the recording, Peter Banks, was out of the band by then (no pun intended). All that guitar work was actually the late great Peter Banks.

    I love that you are so enthusiastic about even the relatively obscure YES songs, like those from the first two albums, before they had really found their sound and had the classic lineup that would propel them to their success in place. Declared the greatest band ever - and yet, there are still so many key tracks that you haven’t even heard yet - the kinds of tracks that would cement your opinion that they are the best band ever - except you’re already there! Well done - you are so right: Yes is THE greatest band ever.

Although there's more great obscure artist that many don't even know or talk about unfortunately. Anyway "THEN" GRABBED MY HEART IMMEDIATELY. An early YES in Progress song that is a perfect representation of the pure essence and direction they were headed lyrically and musically. They used an orchestra on this second album and a bold move at the time which the original guitarist who played on it , Peter Banks wasn't a fan of and who was soon booted from the group. So although Steve Howe is featured in the video, he did not perform on this recording LOL !

    Normally, the bass player here (in the video Tony Kaye) is the keyboard player (for real), and the keyboard player here (in the video Chris Squire) is the bass player (for real). I think they swapped for the video, not for the recording! This goes way back to 1970! They were just kids then (essentially).

    The early stuff prior to The Yes Album contains some of their most innovative stuff... 'Looking Around', 'Astral Traveller', 'Survival' and 'Every Little Thing' a Beatles cover - you need to listen to the Beatles version first. After Going For the One, they lost their way a little bit but there are some good tracks on some of their other albums. It's so good to listen to your positivity about this band. Even though they are one of the most influential bands in music I never really felt they got the popular recognition they deserve. As you point out, perhaps they were just too good for most people to get...

    Hey, Chod, I've really been enjoying your channel, especially your reactions to my favorite band. You're discovering them exactly 50 years after I did, lol.
    The band was really young in that video and hadn't hit the big time yet. You might want to watch a couple of videos where the band is playing for real, not pretending. They filmed Yessongs, the movie, in 1973 when they were just becoming a big draw in concert around the world. It's not the best video/audio quality but a must see. They were on fire. As far as I know the yesofficial version found on TH-cam has the best sound and video quality. My recommendation if you go there would be to check out either Yours is No Disgrace or Close to the Edge, or perhaps even I've Seen All Good People.
    Then you might want to see them performing, same guys, 30 years later in 2004 when they were in their 60's in the Songs from Tsongas video. Lots to choose from in that concert but I'd probably recommend either South Side of the Sky or Ritual.
    I still remember the night I heard the Yessongs version of I've Seen All Good People on WMMR in Philly in my bed when I was a high school kid. I was already a Yes freak but still I was shocked to find out they could play their complex music live, and make it sound even more exciting.
    What a ride it's been...

      I do recommend reacting to the YesSongs album recordings, rather than the movie videos. Not only is the audio better, but I think the performances on the album are better than the ones in the movie. After hearing the album versions, Chod can than sit and watch the movie of YesSongs in its entirety on his own time, and not have to break it up by track.

    • @soundofflute
      @soundofflute 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Your enthusiasm for the band is beautiful. Another two albums that don't get the attention that I think they deserve are "The Ladder" and "Open Your Eyes." The title tracks from both of these later period albums are amazing. Some deride them for various reasons, but they both contain some excellent songs, amazing musicianship, and the band flexing muscles that you might not expect. Also, Give a listen to the album "Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe" - four members of the classic lineup, recorded when Trevor Rabin was still playing with Chris Squire and Alan White in the "official" Yes. On ABWH the bass is played by Tony Levin, and the album is simply gorgeous. Listen to "Brother of Mine" "Fists of Fire" and "Quartet." I think you'll enjoy all of them!

    • @enderjed
      @enderjed 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @stuartdmt
      @stuartdmt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@enderjed Definitely - Magnification is excellent! As for "Fists of Fire," the song didn't make it onto the record as Steve Howe expected with a layer of his guitar work having been stripped off. There is a version of the "restored" recording out there, that has some mastering issues but is pretty amazing - with the added guitar, it's not only hot, it's freaking on fire!

    This from their second album 'Time and a Word', a vastly underrated album, and even though Steve Howe had not yet joined, the joy and fury was already there. I noticed Steve Howe was in the video trying to be inconspicuous. Since they were playing along with the studio audio, as a joke, Chris and Tony switched instruments just to fuck w our minds!! Lol...

    And yes YES is a step above led Zeppelin

      I don’t disagree. LZ enjoyed more success in the 70s but YES’ music I think holds up better now.

    Their first two albums are so underrated it's terrible. Those two albums are great.

    This is real old school Yes, but you can see some of the budding genius in the band in this song..

    Two other songs from this album that you would like are The Prophet and Astral Traveller. This is only their second album so they look very young.

    Chod you’ve only begun to scratched the surface of YES MUSIC, they easily have 50 masterpieces while most bands would be thrilled with only one, and to think “Then” was off they’re 1st album in 1969 when they were still trying to get they’re footing, two songs you must react to is “South Side of the Sky, from the 35th Anniversary CD, Songs From Tsongas” & YES - America as recorded in the studio” but in truth YES has multiple Masterpieces including YES’s Masterpiece Tour Live from around 2004, & the absolute craziest thing about YES is they were better LIVE than in the studio, plus they were all very approachable, very nice people as you said, YES IS BEST!!!

    Steve Howe wasn't even in the band when then made this song (It was Tony Banks), but Steve is in the video.
    My favourite part is the quite dreamy bit at the end. Tony Banks' playing on guitar is great.

    “I have yet to be proven wrong”, you say. As a seasoned yes fan I can say that the day will come when you’ve picked all the sweet tasty fruit from the tree, and you’ll discover the bland, the sour and the rotten. It’s there. And it’s not a tiny percentage either. But if you continue at the slow pace you’ve been going, it will take a while before you get there.
