    they explain sugar’s nickname in the fishes episode. she got it after accidentally adding sugar instead of salt to gravy (making it taste like hawaiian punch). so her entire nickname/identity is a constant reminder of her mistake (and not affectionate like it initially seems). it’s pretty sad actually

      Oh. And for like 90% of the time you’re in a L&D room, you’re just in there by yourself. Like I said, you’ll go through hours and hours of contractions and labor. You will probably have one nurse or midwife come check on you every couple hours until you actually get close to being ready to push. Otherwise, you’re just on your own most of the time

  • @drunkballerina89
    @drunkballerina89 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Just so you guys know, since you kept asking “where are the doctors?“when a woman is in labor there’s really not much that they can do other than timing the contractions. Once contractions happen at a certain duration and with a certain frequency is when they know that the baby is coming, and then there’s something they can do to assist. until sugar decides that she wants the epidural, there’s literally no reason for the doctors to be invading her space while she’s going through the contractions. It’s just part of labor. I do think it’s really clever the way they wrote this episode, similar to the fishes episode being punctuated by Donas timer going off, this episode is punctuated by Natalie’s contractions.

  • @ebraden09
    @ebraden09 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I only made it to 6/10 cm before I was begging for an epidural. Yes, it’s the most unimaginable, intense pain. Sugar was right in saying it’s fucked,lol. And no, the actual doctor doesn’t show up until the very end. Thanks for shouting out us moms, we’ve been through it. 😂

    Unpopular opinion here. A brilliantly acted but poorly written episode. The contrived circumstance that had Sugar calling her Mom and spending hours at the hospital with her alone was implausible enough. But the notion that a family as damaged and dysfunctional as beautifully shown in the Fishes episode in season 2 could be healed in that circumstance at the hospital undercuts the whole story arc of the series. Narcissistic parents like that rarely respond in the story book way shown in that episode. Especially not when confronted. I feel that the episode met the need to somehow redeem and explain DD as a character. The Fishes episode was a masterpiece. This one ruined that for me.

    • @passwordprotectedd
      @passwordprotectedd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      how was it implausible to call her mom? pete was out of town, all the bear employees had their phones put away, and claire is very busy with her job.
      i thought the episdoe made it pretty clear their relationship and donna is still fucked up in a lot of ways. donna was already working on herself by the season 2 finale as well. they also came together in a very intensely emotional moment of birth which seems pretty plausible to me. it's not like they randomly just met up and everything is well.

    • @Justin-ie2zv
      @Justin-ie2zv 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@passwordprotectedd thanks. Appreciate that view, and that many people loved it. But I disagree. EVERY other character had their phones away (during the day well b4 service). AND the restaurant phones are down. AND Pete is away. (Apparently also she is not allowed to call Pete from the hospital - Mom has to leave a message for him!). And that situation lasts for the hours that she is in labour. But the real problem with the episode is how clean the resolution was. The whole premise of that episode is that a narcissistic, abusive parent like that could magically become a source of calm and comfort at that time. This show has made its mark with gritty realism, and sorry for me that ain’t it. A birthing suite during labour is not the place for successful family therapy with a narcissist. The episode was all about redeeming the DD character. I noticed that the show runners were credited with writing this episode - different from the Fishes which was a staff writer Catherine Scetina.

      @@Justin-ie2zvI don’t think that’s the whole takeaway, since even after birth it’s not a permanent repair. Donna exits quietly and leaves Nat to Pete. I think the birth was more of a truce, even if Nat (understandably) kept distance.

      We don't know if things were actually resolved or not tho maybe things will go back to being the way they were and this episode will be just a nice memory for sugar. the very few tender and truly loving moments between me and my very narcissistic father were in the hospital during rough situations so this whole episode seems very plausible to me, having a nice moment with a narcissistic parent doesn't mean that everyone is suddenly healed for the rest of their lives lmao
