Soviet Green (4BO) Distressing Tutorial

- Although I demonstrated this technique in one of my first videos, I thought it deserved a more detailed and updated tutorial, so here it is. I'll make distressing tutorials for other common camouflage colors in the future, but the technique is gonna be always pretty much the same. That being said, this method is very flexible so you can put or own twist on it and change the order of layers and methods. Using a sponge or the speckling technique could be also used during this process. Even the sky is not the limit.

As a CG artist I love seeing where the techniques I use digitaly are similar with the modeling world ! Chipping fluid = masks, black/brown wash = ambient oclusion. Your work is super impressive and I love it !
For drawings it's also useful

I imagine this is an excellent technique for making a model that looks like it's been stored outdoors for several years, as some museum vehicles are.
It will work great for that too. However for an operational vehicle it has to be overly strong, because the upcoming weathering techniques will tone it down.

By far one of the best paint tutorial channel on the block. The information found here is quite helpful for any type of modeling and hobby-ing type crafts where you’d want to weather and distress small things and all that good jazz. I know at this point I want to try my hand at some type of military vehicle maybe even in the sci-fi category. Once I find a good place to buy them. Keep up the Night Shift you’re awesome. 🤙🏼

I recently got back into modeling after a 10 year hiatus. I’ve picked up a bunch of 1/72 T-55s, T-72s, and a random T-80. Your videos have been a huge help and a source of inspiration.

Nice technique. In fact, it's perfect timing as I think that it could be great to add texture on a paint brick wall that building now.
The black on the hull sides behind the wheels is just like a shadow in 3d modelling, really good effect for realism
Yup, it works as a fake shadow if you can't reach that area with the subsequent paint layers.

Excellent job as usual the technique used as inspired me to do this with my next build. Also thanks for the tip on the 4BO paint you use as i am on the look out for the perfect 4BO. I am using AK Interactive at the moment which alright but i am always willing to try different brands. Thanks for another awesome video.
AK 4BO is great but a little bit on the pure green side. MRP has that perfect khaki/dark yellow tint to it. I'm not an expert on authentic colors, so my opinion is mostly based on how I like it :)

As a 3d modeller (as in cgi) , watching these videos is quite interesting, it gives me some interesting ideas on how to approach texturing and a lot of what you do on the computer is similar to this

Just getting back into modelling after a 30 year absense and have a T-34 tank and mig ammo green paint for it so found this video just in time!
Fabulous! Considering most tanks are green this is an excellent way of breaking up the sometimes monotone appearance and add a lot of realism. So excellent work as usual Mr Nightshift 😂

I've watched this 10 times to get reasoning and details as to why he does it a certain way. I was using hair spray and got the same results too.

Great vid; I finished my JS-2 though, so will be trying this technique for next 4BO vehicle - might practice some on some old junkers first though as it looks... well, not difficult per se, but difficult to get the right subtle tones and shades. I take it that something similar would work on a dark yellow Panzer?

I'm curious how this would work on German Yellow too. I'm most likely gonna give it a try on the small Rutscher or Panther. But yes, the process is the same, just different tones of dark yellow.
