      The Mexican and European series are mostly road courses. Mostly though.

      @WilhelmX666 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +SonicTheBrony nope. European is. mexican "nascar" series runs on ovals, destroyed, ridiculous "ovals". There's only one road race in the mexican series and that is Monterrey, which is a weirdly shaped oval.

      +True Racer Some leagues run series like that. Socks Out Racing is running a "Trans-Am" series with the Xfinity cars on road courses. Should be fun as hell. First race is this sunday (20 Sep) at Road America.

    FFS Matt... halfway through the video now and I'm terribly disappointed with the severe lack of love taps. Y U DO DIS!!!!!
    Also yes, I once shifted from 6th to 4th directly so hard that I pulled my TH8RS straight off the desk. Good times, skidmarks both on the track and the undies that day. xD

    I will never get over your ability to talk while driving. I once tried to play Grid: Autosport (which isnt even that hard a game to play) without disconnecting a Voice conversation I was having, and I was hitting every single wall (and no, I dont entirely suck at driving)
    So yeah. That's a very underappreciated talent you have. Going over the plans for NASCAR's growth into road racing in your head, while still hitting braking points xD

    Well, we pretty much already have a "NASCAR road racing series", it's just not run by NASCAR, but SCCA. We call it Trans Am (and TA2), and under the classy bodies it's pretty much business as usual. In the not pro category there's a couple related classes where we run slightly older cars: V8 Stockcar series. It's just a shame none of the TV channels want to show the roadracing that goes on every weekend and instead we get reruns of reality TV.

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +suprakillavr4 Yea, having one of the Trans Am cars (either class) would be awesome. I've done a couple of hosted races with the Super Late Model and regular Late Model in iRacing (which are the closest to those cars available) and it's just an absolute riot.

    the reasons you listed as to why they are fun to drive on raod courses are the exact reasons I hate driving them anywhere except an oval track. On that, about half way through this season I decided to try oval racing. I had absolutely zero experience here as I've always thought it boring because I would rather claw my eyes out than watch an oval race.
    I remember, I dont' know how long ago now, but you mentioned ovalracing can teach road course guys things they never thought they would learn, so I decided wth, I'll try it out. So I jump in my rookie I-don't-know what it was and entered a race on some short track. I actually had a good time. First thing I learned was how much time can be gained from coasting these things as opposed to brake/gas all the time. I applied that to some of my GT3 and GT1 (new driver in GT1, only 2 weeks so far) and i was surprised that i gained a few tenths here and there compared to my best times before.
    Anyways, this was long, didn't mean to write a book, but yeah, Oval racing is run, there I said it. I still like Road more though.

  • @TripSpeedGT

    I do best when I'm right behind someone and I'm having to push to keep up with them. That seems to help my concentration. Meanwhile, I do worst when I'm just by myself and I'm in danger of letting my mind wander. For example, at Road Murica I had my best consistency and the fewest mistakes in a 2800 SOF race, when I was chasing around second and third place right ahead of me. Then when the next day I found myself in the second split in a 1600 SOF race and was able to open up a decent lead, my consistency was horrible and I was making all sorts of little mistakes. Apparently my brain wants to go into "power saver mode" when it's not forced to run at 100% lmao

    • @JacobGames66
      @JacobGames66 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +TripSpeedGT same at times, after 5 laps or so, and i get into a rythem i don't make mistakes. Also I prefer to run in second because you brake when they brake so you have a guide, basically, and because i'm more of a guess braker (i just guess where to brake and in my 10 years experience i get it correct most of time) but when i am new to a circuit i like to learn where to brake by sitting behind another car, however sometimes I get carried away and just divebomb them and then make mistakes after like you do.

    I do use the H pattern for these cars. And yeah when side by side on a straight I do shift really aggressively as well. I think it does make you a little bit faster on the straight because if you shift quicker, you spend less time not accelerating between shifts.
    Anyway awesome to see you post one of these races. I've been racing much more than usual this week because this car track combo is so much fun. One thing is puzzling me though. The quickest I've gone in a race this week has been a 19.1 or 19.0 I think. Your lap two in this one was an 18.1 and I couldn't see any real differences between how you drive a lap and how I do it. Kind of perplexing. My optimal is a 17.4 I think but I've never gotten anywhere near that. I've done 18.x times in practice though. Maybe I've just been racing in slower weather.

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +mrsiCkstar Weather doesn't change in this series. Generally it means you aren't going fast enough all over. If your optimal is that much faster than your race laps, you might want to work on consistency because you clearly can get one sector done right, but not often.

    • @506thLittleberry
      @506thLittleberry 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Empty Box I just checked and you're right about the weather :o. My mind must be playing tricks on me because I could have sworn I've seen different lighting conditions in the races I've done and I assumed it was due to cloud coverage or something.
      I've actually been very consistent in my lap times during the races... it's all low to mid .19s and then the last two laps in the high .19s. I don't really understand why I've been able to do 18s in practice but not in race. It's most likely a mental issue. In practice I don't care about incidents but in the race I probably subconsciously reign it in to stay consistent and inc free.
      About my optimal. Early in the week when I started practicing I tried all kinds of driving styles from very late braking to early braking and high exit speed so the optimal is probably not very accurate. I tried to test this but I was unable to clear my sector times :/.
      Anyway, thanks for the insight. Will you be doing a Darlington race this week?

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrsiCkstar
      If I can tear myself away from MGSV I'll race at Darlington, that track is awesome.

      +The Nekomancer Well, if u both do similar lap times its not really justified to complain about early braking, its just a different way of approaching the track. You should always be aware for earlier braking points when being close to someone. If you are much faster its a different story.

      I have and they do make a difference in the longer races & or when racing for hours on end especially when you need to have a high level of concentration (e.g night races or endurance races). If you're racing every so often then kinda not really worth it but if you are going to be on a computer for hours on end then they are worth it imo

      @gruftschreck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +iceshard989 yeah? Wouldn't have thought so, that it helps with concentration, but cool.

      +gruftschreck Nope, I'm waiting for the final variant of the Rift before giving it a go. I'm in no rush. But from people I trust, it's a big deal. And it should be, considering with racing games we have the hardware to interact with the car (unlike a FPS where you walk with WASD for example), we dont need to flip buttons like in a flight sim... honestly, I think VR is almost tailor made for racing games / sims. I expect it to be a game changer once it finally takes hold.

    I think a lot of your issues in passing the 8 car stemmed mostly from just plain burning up your tires too much. Focusing on rolling the corner usually helps me (I was able to catch Tim Olson and beat him the last race I did here), especially with corner exit. Basically, the less you have to countersteer, the less wiggly the car is, and you'll fare a ton better in the long run by being gentler with the car.

    I would of been getting entirely too frustrated while following/racing that #8 car. Extremely early braking, throwing me off my approach to the corner, and yet getting beat on exit. Very tough to pass here I found with this car last week. You only have 3 spots to really try it. Turn 1. The downhill hair pin, and the exit onto the front straight. Other than that, it's pretty difficult. Especially with how the #8 was driving.

    • @KFieLdGaming
      @KFieLdGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not to mention the fact, that in order to utilize those 3 overtaking zones, you really have to beat the car off the previous corner. It's entirely too tempting to try and out-break someone in this car, but with the brakes on these things, it's way too easy to get it wrong, or wheel-hop straight into the gravel.

Are you upset that Montoya didn't win and due to the double points, the champion was someone else? Also, I understand that in Iracing, the car you were driving is considered a "Nascar B" car but couldn't you just call them an Xfinity series car? Also, I was so confused when I saw the steering wheel. Did you forget to turn it off or why was it there? Lastly, the last 4 laps or so were so insane. Thank goodness this wasn't at Bathurst! I feel it would've been even worse to pass. (BTW, I know these cars don't race there.) I would've suggested to probably shift down to 1st gear in more of those "less than 60 mph corners". I know the car goes crazy loose, but you could have had a better run off the corners. In the end it was a fun and clean race to watch.

      The whole points thing with Indycar annoyed me, yes, but it's whatever. Dixon earned it while JPM basically sat around the second half of the season playing defense, which is not what JPM does. I dunno, double points as a whole need to go away or it needs to be like it was a few years ago where the triple crown was double points while there were three double headers on road / street circuits to balance it out.
      I call them B because that is what iRacing calls them. I figure it's probably easier if I call it what they call it rather than confuse some people who may not know what they are, if that makes any sense.
      Not sure what you mean about the wheel. Why wouldn't it be there? It's there in 98% of my other videos, watching without it is nothing more than bizarro as the car magically steers itself.

      That's not what I mean at all, what I mean is the slow cars exist to teach you how to drive. Things like downforce, slicks and high (but not crazy high) power masks poor driving - in the low end cars you don't have those usually.

    I know at this point that you're an avid fan of Indycar, so what's your opinion on oval racing with open wheel/open cockpit race cars? I know it's immensely fun but since we've lost two people in the last four years on extremely high speed ovals, it seems to me like Indycar should abandon all ovals other than Indianapolis, just for safety's sake. Thoughts?

      Gonna rant here.
      Hell no, and I doubt Justin or Dan (especially Dan) would have wanted to ditch ovals either.
      Overlooked in the Justin Wilson incident is the simple fact that it had nothing to do with the racing itself. Everyone else walked away just fine. That part has gone almost entirely forgotten.
      What happened last weekend could have happened at any track with an open cockpit car. It wasn't a product of speed (Wilson had already slowed down), it wasn't a product of overly dangerous racing (unlike Vegas 2011) - the same type of thing happened at Indy GP in 2014, Hungaroring 2009, Brands Hatch 2009.
      Not to mention (and one I totally forgot about last week) - Iowa 2015 xfinity NASCAR practice, where a piece of ballast came off of one of the cars and destroyed the windshield of the car behind and damaged the helmet of the driver inside. That driver was fine, but an inch or two one way or another and you don't know - racing never ceases to surprise us with the horrible timing and placement of what can happen, it really does.
      TBH, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that debris striking a driver is happening more often than we hear about it at lower levels especially. The same incident can happen in a lowly formula ford, not just high tier open wheelers! And likely, you'd never hear about it, unlike when something happens at the high end.
      Can improvements be made? Certainly. It seems like both F1 and Indycar are both set for major regulation overhauls in the next few years (I believe F1's overhaul is set for 2017, Indycar for 2018 though that may change). There is time to evaluate closing the cars off and to evaluate it seriously. I'm personally mixed about canopies, but if the drivers want them and they can be implemented properly to not create a new safety issue, I won't mind. If it gets them to do 250 into T1 at Indy no one will care.
      If anything, Indy is the most dangerous one around given the speeds are much higher into the turns than at the other large ovals. Karam hit the wall in a 200 MPH corner, T1+T3 at Indy are 215+ MPH corners depending on where they are in the pack. Not to mention the track is much narrower and the racing line is single file or in the wall.
      Removing ovals from Indycar would be the end of it for me. I'm not a huge oval guy (I prefer road racing, but I certainly "get" oval racing), but losing that diversity that makes Indycar so unique (no one else does it like Indycar, no one) while severing ties with what little history hasn't been totally pissed all over and forgotten in the last 20 years...
      Removing all ovals from Indycar except Indy, well.. That would be like F1 without Monza, NASCAR without Talladega, V8 Supercars without Adelaide - You may not have taken the biggest race away, but you've taken a piece of it's soul.
      During the split years I was certainly on the CART/CCWS side of things (better cars, better tracks, more exciting, road racing, arguably better drivers depending on how far into the 00s you are talking) until it ended up being pretty much road course only with a pity oval or two. It just isn't right. Meanwhile, once the IRL (ugh) started road racing I started paying more attention. I know I'm not alone in this either.

      +Empty Box How about a rant on double-points season finales?

    • @TheMacqman9
      @TheMacqman9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Empty Box awesome input man, cements you as by far my favorite youtuber with this.
      I'm pretty interested to see Mercedes new halo design put to use, I think that it could actually work. Cockpits have been tested of course, and they showed that they put fans in danger instead of the drivers (don't want fans to sign wavers when they buy their tickets lol)
      Also, I don't think that an indy car going 220 around an oval is dangerous, but when two or three indy cars are wheel to wheel going 220 in a long corner like we see at Las Vegas and Pocono it becomes something else entirely. Its breathtaking to watch and I'm sure thats the type of thing the drivers live for, but maybe at this point now that people are starting to die again...idk. And maybe its just one of those freak things that its happened twice recently.
      And about Indianapolis, because its four corners instead of two, and because the banking is so low, its extremely rare to see cars go three wide and its pretty rare to see them go two wide unless someone is passing a back marker. If two drivers are racing for position side by side, their battle is short lived because the corners are only 90 degrees rather than 180, much shorter and quicker, but a little slower. No ones died during the 500 since 1973.
      I'm truly all for the lure of danger as a fan. I guess thinking about it it shouldn't be up to anybody but the drivers to decide. If they want to abandon ovals then they should, if they want to keep the adrenaline then by all means, it makes for some spectacular racing. But 30 degree banked mile and a halfs...eh.

    • @TacticalCardboard
      @TacticalCardboard  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cockpits / lack there of had nothing to do with fan safety. Whatever they make the canopy out of isn't any more dangerous than carbon fiber.
      They haven't been implemented because there is a lot of support stuff that never needs considered in open wheel (driver cooling is huge, wipers, defogging) and the results are still inconclusive as to if they are truly safer or not when you consider the much more likely occurrence of driver extraction.
      Secondly, the only people who have even mentioned abandoning ovals are fans / shoddy journalists.
      You must have been watching a different Pocono race, the only time they were even two wide in the corners were on fresh tires, which these drivers are good enough to handle it. There were two crashes that didn't consist of a driver losing it or something breaking - Rahal/Vautier and Kimball/Hawksworth. Both were the casual racing incident and not much more, which is typically the case in most racing incident Indycar wrecks. In general, the big ones are the single car ones.
      Interesting you didn't mention Fontana this year at all, which was waaaay more dangerous than Pocono ever could be. That race was bungled by a poor downforce selection by Indycar accounting for warm weather that never came (but very well could have) and not listening to the drivers who reported it. You won't see that type of racing again (god willing) even if Fontana does come back. Also worth noting - despite the insanity, no one got hurt.
      Las Vegas 2011 was borderline negligence. They put way too many cars on way too small of a track with way too easy of a car to drive with way too much pack racing with way too many inexperienced drivers. There were so many factors at play there that surely won't be repeated any time soon. That race was a perfect storm, it was not just your standard oval race.
      Thanks to the DW12 anyways, that pack would be busted up by the aerodynamics and the tire fall off.
      Texas is a similar config to Vegas (1.5 mile intermediate), something like 4 cars finished on the lead lap this year due to car handling being so big. The year before was much the same. In the old car it was much like Vegas 2011 was where you had a wad of cars all race.
      Even if you could pull the same field as Vegas 2011 had (which you couldn't given the fact after that race the old car was done for so literally anyone with a tub came out because it was about to be useless) you couldn't get near the same pack of doom with the current car. It just doesn't race that way at all, which was intentional from stage one with the car.
      Your stat about "no one has died in the 500 since 1973" doesn't mean much when people have still died at IMS in Indycars, just not during the race itself. Several people have died in qualifying, testing or practice since then.
      Yes the geometry of the track helps (as it did at Pocono as well) a lot in creating prolonged wheel to wheel racing, but at the same time it's also by a decent margin the fastest on top of having 90 degree corners meaning that any single car wreck is going to be huge. At Fontana or Pocono for example, Hinch probably walks away and has a laugh if he had the same type of wreck that he had at Indy this year.

      +Empty Box you've certainly opened my eyes up to it a lot more. You know more about the intricacies of indycar as i mostly follow f1 so i like getting your take on it here. As for the cockpit, the worry wasn't the cockpit itself breaking, but that the "fighter jet" style shape would act as a ramp for debris and could potentially deal some damage. Driver safety is one thing and thats not up for us to decide, but when it comes to safety of the fans...pretty dang important. And i wish there was a better solution than the current generation of catch fencing...i would honestly hate to see what Dan's body looked like after such a collision. When you car is literally an upside down airplane, going upside down next to a fence just can't end well. Also if you remember, and I'm not sure on the details, but Dan was taking part in some sort of challenge where we has starting from the back and if he won he earned a certain amount of money or something? Again not sure, but i know he was charging his way forward as fast as he could, likely risking a little more than usual. I guess its the nature of racing and if we like it or not, in many cases a drivers death usually opens our future generations eyes to how great they truly were (senna)
