It’s so nice to see steam running service without a diesel in the consist. I know the diesels aren’t pushing and are just for dynamic brakes and such but it feels more special I guess when they aren’t there. Like its “true” steam. Not to mention a uniform lineup of coaches. Idk, seeing this excursion was so special. Two Northerns going at it. I’d give anything to see 4449 run a clean string of daylight coaches again one day
I believe Union Pacific had a locomotive in the yard that day that had the number 4449. It had something to do with paperwork. After the locomotive left Portland it took that number off.
THE UP X844 is on the upper Side of Sp 4449 engine. The Train is No. X844 for the Excursion Trips. The Engine itself is no. "UP 845", AS it is temp. NO. IT WAS "Rented" for the Trip. TO ID THE TRAIN, IT IS ID ON BNSF TRACKS SHARED WITH UP BETWEEN PORTLAND AND SEATTLE as Train x844!

@@rileysanesh9238 That is correct. It has been in either the Cheyenne roundhouse or steam shop since 2010. Overhaul was started and several years work was completed before it was decided it needed a frame up restoration. Currently the #3985 project is on hold and unlikely to see any more work for several years.

My understanding is the UPY 845 patch was merely a joke between Doyle McComorick and Steve Lee. The Y in UPY designates yard service

SP 4449 was in the lead going North. UP 844 was in the lead going South.
