How good would Silent Wolf be if he played today?
He'd still keep up with the big dogs, just like loveage beating leffen on his random tournament return. They were not just technical, but super smart as well.
I like that these videos aren’t about dissing any players but more about showing you their backstory and accomplishments in Melee history.
Glad you like them! Yeah I’d never diss anyone’s skill as this game as its literally the hardest out there. Some people see a player like silent wolf and go yeah he was good, but he never won a big one. But he was fucking amazing at melee
These retrospective videos on smash players are so fucking funny. I used to see some of these guys at locals eating mcdonalds and we are talking about them like they’re some mystical heroes
I grew up with Silent Wolf in the ghetto of Tukwila Washington, and it's honestly a true success story compared to the other options of growing up in that hell hole. lol.
WA player here since 2006. Excellent video highlighting the true nature of one of Melee’s most formidable mother fuckers to ever pickup a controller. This is coming from someone who had the misfortune of competing against him for over a decade.
For anyone curious about a fun but very deep lore dive of Silent Wolf’s origin story and the history of WA Smash…
Back in the day, WA was dominated by a crew named SKYPAL (‘Sheik Kills Your Peach At Leisure’) which consisted of players like Sastopher, Blair (aka VarietyBarrage), and others. Sastopher was a top 10 player in the world at the time, regarded as the best Peach in the world, and the first Peach to defeat Ken in his prime era.
Silent Wolf was apart of a crew named Combo Status (formerly known as ‘Sssssp!’) which consisted of the likes of BladeWise, Luigi Ka-Master, Eggz, DJ Combo, Gimpyfish, among others. Silent Wolf was considered a secondary threat in this crew, right behind Ka-Master.
To no surprise, SKYPAL generated the highest tournament placings in WA (the Gameclucks monthlies) with Sastopher and Blair usually getting 1st and 2nd, Ka getting top 3-5, and SW somewhere in the top 5-10. Though both crews were rivals in a way, Combo Status was sort of the jealous little brother to SKYPAL. Combo Status hoped to catch up someday.
Eventually Ka would surpass both Blair and Sas and became the #1 player in the state around 2007, iirc.
Ka-Master would go on to take a very long break, about half of Combo Status went inactive, and all of SKYPAL would retire. These happenings would take place circa 2008.
Now, this opened up a door for SW. A new era in WA smash was birthing. New players were coming up in the state (famous names today like Toph and Vish, who were thirsty for competition back then), but to no surprise SW was clearly the best by proxy. All the best players in the state retired/went inactive. BladeWise was SW’s only competition in the state but.. at the same time he wasn’t. SW RARELY lost a local.
With all of this in mind, in my opinion, the MOST interesting thing to take from this is that this was the period where SW’s skill started skyrocketing at an exponential rate. SW was becoming untouchable to us WA competitors. He definitely attended tourneys OOS but for all intents and purposes he didn’t have competition in his area. There was no Slippi at this time. And the only people who could beat him were close to a 14 hour drive away in NorCal.
When SW had a ‘disappointing’ result OOS, all of us WA players knew he was playing poorly. We couldn’t wait to see the day when he finally played his true potential and cook some top players in bracket. And eventually, it started to happen.
To this day, I’m not exactly sure what that man did to not only keep up with international/top levels of skill, but just out-right beat it. He had VERY little resources to do so. But he did somehow. My guess is he just practiced tech skill and theory-crafted the best he could 🤷♂️
Long live our local legend 🤫 🐺
This was so dope to read! Thank you for providing this! It goes so deep for how some top players just get so good alone, it’s insane. What an awesome read and I appreciate this.
On a side note I know who you are and we even played at genesis 3 or 4. Your marth is fucking insane dawg. Def wanna see it come out one of these days. You trashed me in friendlies then my friend yeeman on stream right after 😭
@@JeramiJoseph Omg 😂 no way, I thought my name was lost in the annals of Smash haha. Thanks man! I retired back in 2017, but I still keep up with the game often. GGs to you and Yeeman 🙂
@@Chiplinked that’s hilarious. Oh yeah. I know my good share of names especially when I’ve played them. Was fun homie, hope to see ya in the future! Tysm again for the old lore
@@JeramiJoseph this was a really fun read - tbh with vids like this going forward it would be cool to see you make a community post saying "hey I'll be making a vid about x - if you're from that scene/era and would like to contribute any info, it'd be great" perhaps? iirc this isn't the first time we've had people come crawling out of 2007 to share old stories, I think someone had some really cool stuff to share on your M2K vid too
My man
Silentwolf was the reason 20XX became a thing.
It's hard to evaluate the impact he had on the game, but let's put it this way: He was the first to consistently do things we thought were TAS only.
He defined the Fox vs Floaties metagame and was the first Fox-only main that could both do the techs consistently and place well.
Before UCF and good controlers, Fox used to... kinda suck? A lot of nowaday's meta revolves around shielddrops and dashbacks against, for example, Marth.
The neutral game used to be more static, with not as much lateral movement. Fox had to have the cleanest shield pressure to do anything, with lots of quick doubleshines and drillshine, and way less dashdances and grabes. Also you had to play "around", not with platforms because shielddrops were so esoteric, it never worked consistently.
Silentwolf could beat m2k with fox in 2015 with basically just double jumps and aerials/shine. That shit is so hard, we thought it was not feasible to win with Fox.
Also, he had the cleanest ledgedashes before anyone else.
He was super fun to watch. Def a fan over here!
Moky is pretty damn technical right now, but it's hard to compare to silent wolf considering how much controls have changed
Yeah this guy was doing turn around waveshines on a normal ass controller. That is so nuts 😂
I got into melee around Apex 2015. A combo of Silentwolf and Hax is why I’d go on to pick Fox and SW is definitely why I play green Fox. One of my fav players of all time, thanks for making this to show newer people to the scene how awesome he was. (Also, he’s Mang0’s real best friend)
That’s so hype! Glad you got some dope inspiration from his play!
Shoutouts my boy Relno, forever putting Mikehaze in the dirt
Relno was an actual tech god. So insane 😭
@@JeramiJoseph the firefox stall, ledgedash shine side-b to ledge thingy where he just disappears aka "the relno", I asked mike to do it once a year later and he laughed and told me to fuck off lmao
There are a few with similar reputations, from other countries. But SW definitely topped the US players in techskill back then.
Dark and Tani from Japan
kJab and PST from Germany
Silent Wolf and Eggz from the US
these guys were pushing the limit of what was deemed possible
SW must be at least top 35 all time. One of the most influential foxes right outside the top 10. I love that he had a winning record against M2k one of the best players against spacies all time. Cracked fox with great skill
Silent wolf was so good 😭 he def didn’t get enough credit
Otto was one of the greatest non gods ever
Dude was nasty at the game 😍
This series is dope dude! Its one of my fav melee content pieces at the moment. Would love to see a how good was shroomed in the future. Keep up the good work!
Glad you’re enjoying it 😄 but isn’t shroomed still active? I’ve thought about him for sure but he still plays!
@@JeramiJoseph he kinda plays every now and then but a man can dream LOL. Still love your work and passion on these videos.
First heard of swolf when I popped in on a Mario party stream. One thing led to another and I found his attack on top tier video. Then I found the smash doc and now melee is my main grind game. Love this guy.
That’s so hype.
What's the song that starts around 3:05? I feel like I've heard it a million times before >_> (please include a track list in future descriptions)
@@Spunney machinimasound Queen of the night
I've actually known Silent Wolf in real life since we were 10 years old. lol. Haven't seen him much since after high school (2009) but I still see him around every so often. I can say he definitely whooped my ass in melee since the very first day it came out. Lmao.
Man, these videos, are getting more and more intense but I am enjoying them and I’m learning from them
I feel like so many people only know silent wolf because of the Axe 4 stock, and think he's not that good because of it.
But that 4 stock was so legendary BECAUSE it was on silent wolf. Its like thinking Justin Wong is bad at Street Fighter because of moment 37
Silent wolf was insane at the game. I’m glad I got to show some of his good stuff instead of just the 4 stock yeah
Great vid! Any chance I can get the background soundtrack name?
Appreciate it homie! Which song were you talking about? I got you
@@JeramiJosephSpecifically looking for the tracks that start at these times:

You have great taste in music 😅
a druggedfox video would be pretty neat
Yeah he was super solid too!
I genuinely feel so bad for Silent Wolf, like, so bad. He was one of the greatest and coolest players but only gets clowned on instead of appreciated because he had one bad game :(
Yeah same. Why I wanted to make this video so people could see how dope he was as a player
@@JeramiJoseph I really respect your commitment to youtube. You make these dope ass videos very frequently and still take it upon yourself to interact with your community and reply to every comment with something meaningful. My fave smash youtuber for sure!
@@icymiles appreciate it ❤️❤️❤️ trying my best out here!
@@JeramiJoseph You will make it bro, trust
@@icymiles thank you so much! That’s the dream baby
Anyone remember Relno? He wasn’t the best at competitive melee but his tech skill was the best I’ve ever seen.
Relno is absolutely insane with melee tech lol
Was/may still be in active duty hence why he disappeared but him Dark Hax and Silentwolf are undoubtedly the 4 most technical foxes there's another that begins with D i forgot his name on twitter who's also insane
Relno was just humanized tas
I think some great players to make more of these videos about could be: flyamanita, darkrain, dart, syrox, dizzkidboogie, armada, kirbykaze, macd, abate, gravy and druggedfox. Just some ideas!
These are great! Yeah I have some in the works and some other videos too. I already have an armada one so def check that one out if you haven’t 😄
Good video! Loving the content you’re pumping out, keep it up brother
Appreciate it homie! Tysm ❤️
“He uses vanilla melee and stock controller, insane” like bro so do I and my tech rivals his..
But 17th place at apex is insane lol
Otto was insane 😂😂😂 wish he still blessed us with his gameplay
Dude SilentWolf was my favorite player when I got into the scene, too bad he's most known for getting 4 stocked by Axe and choking against Flys Sopo
Yeah true that. People define him by his 4 stock by axe and it shouldn’t be like that. He was so good. Made it to top 8 at evo! What the
The tournament “Good Shit German” is pronounced “Herman” it was named after The Germ who used to live in NorCal
Silent Wolf beat M2k at “Do You Fox With It” before his fox dittos with Hax.
Ahh that’s good to know! Thank you so much. Appreciate it 😄
Syrox is/was pretty sick.
Syrox was absolutely insane too. I was at his breakout tournament in az and watching him play was wild
@@JeramiJoseph he got brought up during LACS 5 when somone (moky?) was schmovin on Randall
Very nice guy miss him competing
Same here. He was a blast to watch!
I don't know if it's just me but I feel like Fox players these days aren't going for the ballsy flashy gameplay to get the viewers hyped and are just more technical in an optimal way. The level these days is incredibly high but with the side effect being less style
Wayyyy less style these days. Unless it’s moky or zain. Most people just care about winning now
How good was Silent Wolf? Well, in 2012 he JV5d me with his sheik. That he rarely played. (Granted, I had just discovered the scene a week prior to that tournament)
Dude was so good holy moly
@@JeramiJoseph He was about as nice as you could be after destroying someone that bad. He just looked over at me and said "That's only the 2nd time I've done that" hahaha. I remind him about it in his stream every so often.
@@zog6940 what a homie. Seemed like a really dope dude. I only saw him live at tournaments a few times. Never met him, but seemed dope as hell
I had heard about Hax$ being the most technical Fox in Melee. I don't really know how relevant that is compared to Silentwolf
Hax and silent wolf were seen as the two technical foxes at the top level
the lone silent wulf
Probably the single player I was most sad to see retire :( great vid though! You should do Ice too
Appreciate it homie! Silent wolf was such a cool player to watch. Ice is definitely on the list!
If u aren't a silentwolf fan u gotta fix that asap
Damn right
The clip loaded on Pornhub is crazy. 😂 People wasn't playing no games back then sheesh
Was different times back then 😂
silentwolf sticky walked so ibdw could run
That’s hype 😂
He beat mew2king 3 times in a row
That’s so wild. He was so solid as a player
fucking love silent wolf
He’s a dope ass player
SW was a fun player to watch
His style was so dope to watch yeah
need a how good was abate
Oh that’s a good one!
This is Javi erasure
What
otto is my boy
Dude is sick
you should cover PC chris sometime
Ooo that’s a dope one!
@@JeramiJoseph Yeah i thought so, love the vids!
@@dredawg8788 appreciate it homie ❤️ lots more coming!
Tbh only stock should be allowed period
otto my inspiration
That’s so hype 😄
Lmao @ good shit "Germ"en hahahaha.
These melee docs give everyone warped views of the ACTUAL coast to coast melee scene.
how good was westballz?
Great video, but I can't see Silent Wolf as anything else but the guy who got 4 stocked by axe in less than a minute
Thank you. But I tried to make this vid so people see him in a different light 😄
He was so sick at melee and it sucks he was in associated with the 4 stock
Relno is more
Dude relno is the most insane melee player of all time lol. Like still puts box players to shame it’s wild
isn’t relno the most technical player?
🤫🐺
Silent Wolf’s legacy is getting four stocked by Axe at EVO
He did so much other shit 😂
@@JeramiJoseph I know, but that’s his legacy because that’s like the most well known thing associated with his name from my knowledge
lets change that!
That’s definitely the most well known moment he was involved in, but he also had a winning record against M2K in M2K’s best matchup.
@@cy1763 I wouldn’t call him getting 4 stocked at evo his legacy 😂
His legacy was being the best player in the pnw innovating and becoming good without many resources. Pushing melee to higher boundaries than ever before tech and speed wise. One of the only to beat several gods. That’s his legacy
SUBBED
Thank you 😄
