You must be nuts, before this competition started I’d of agreed with you. However now we actually have a league phase with all teams competing together and we have more epic clashes not to mention how the results have gone. It’s been very captivating imo
This new format has less intensity and teams can lose a lot of games and still qualify. The ''home and away'' concept removal is probably the worst part. It takes away the excitement of revenge. To top it all off there is not much incentive of winning the ''Ligue''😂
@@iking200 there is. if you finnish first your oponent in round of 16 will be the team finishing at the lowest position and you face the runner-up just in the final.
@@iking200 I personally think the intensity is higher if was 6 games most teams would’ve been struggling and not many are safe now with 2 games to go, not to mention as you mentioned there is only one match against each team so you need to perform each time which increases intensity. The last thing I’ll say is with the single fixtures it separates the league and knockout phases structure and gives more evenly balanced games on the whole
@@tintedredglasses2819 No, it actually the opposite, for example Real Madrid against Liverpool was supposed to be a big game with high stakes. When Real Madrid lost the game Ancelotti said this game was not that important because it won't make the difference whether Real Madrid qualify or not. In other words this format is devaluing big games. Real Madrid should not be playing Liverpool unless there are high stakes to make it exciting - they should meet in a the knockout stages or such games will be boring over time. Alternatively, they must make the Ligue rating to mean something.
Just watching one team play away games not home games does not really expose their strength, the fixtures are so random, UEFA Champions League is losing value with this
@@Neobrian30 Don’t really think so. You don’t need to play two matches with a team to make clear who is superior and who isn’t, furthermore with the old format the power relations between clubs in a group were already largely set, due to the group lots they were attributed to. You may have one group of death per year were some good teams face each other in the group stages, but most of the other groups would have been lackluster and already predetermined by which lot group (1,2,3 or 4) they would have been in. Furthermore there isn’t much randomness with these draws as you merely confront 2 teams from each lot group. You could even say that this champions league format is fairer than the former has been, because strong teams have more matches against teams on their lvl and weaker teams have more affordable matches to gain points from.
they did not ruin it. at all there's many more matches now there are 36 teams now, instead of 32 the bigger teams get to play eachother many more times literally any team who goes on a good streak could dethrone the big ones so underdog is still possible
The new format is dogshit, the only reason they changed the system is to get more revenue. Its just more matches and a lot of injuries, no competive integrity anymore
Are you stupid or what? Don't know for who's team you are talking but no way that team has it worse now, when it can finish 24th and still go to eliminations. While back then had to be 2nd out of 4 and a lot of big teams were 3rd and eliminated almost every year. But instead, now you have City, Real and PSG, who don't care, lose more of their matches and will still go further anyway. So, how can whoever team you have in mind not qualify now?
If we really care for the little clubs, this format is for sure better for them. But if we look it from interest in the big games or even in "justice" so to say, this is way worse than before. Here is what I have in mind. It is not kinda justified to finish 9 out of 36 and not be qualified further. In the same time you can be 24th/36(like just in the worse part of 2/3rds of the teams, and have the same future opportunities as the 9th team. It somehow looks way ridiculous to me. And also I don't think is fair how some teams are paired with mostly big teams and then you have others that play 4 or even 5 of those 8 matches against the weakest teams. It gives way big advantage to some and is way crueler to others. At least with the groups before was fair for everybody. The only positive is that the lowest teams have way bigger chances now. But lets be fair, who even cares for them(except their supporters, who are not much outside their cities). So overall this really is for worse. And here is one example(that I'm sure will happen in max 5 years time)-you can have a team with 2 wins, 2-3 draws and 3-4 loses to end around 24 and go further somehow. And again, somebody might finish with like 6 wins and 2 loses(or even draw and lose), but still finish 9th and get screwed further. Does that look fair and interesting? Even in those 6 games, there were a lot of cases that a team with like 8-9-10 points finishes 2nd and goes further.
9th and 10th play against 23th and 24th, they don't have the same opponents, and it's fair. "some teams are paired with mostly big teams and then you have others that play 4 or even 5 of those 8 matches against the weakest teams" - this was the case before too, there were easier and stronger groups Bigger percentage of teams goes further, 67% instead of 50% like before
@anteveic327 Unless it was group of death, there were always groups with max 2 very strong teams(like those who win the UCl in last like 10 years). 3rd team is always mediocre at best and the 4th either also middle or worse. And even most of the groups were like 1 very big contender and then 2 or 3 kinda 'middle' teams. So, almost everybody had a chance. It's still 2 out 3 very strong teams(and that is for the little ones only). While now you can be paired to play against Liverpool, Bayern, Real, AC Milan and City for example. While someone else is playing against Sturm, Zvezda, Leipzig, Young Boys and Atalanta for example. That is nothing like the previous one. And about 9th place. Yes, they are playing the 24th. But also 24th is playing the 9th. And if they get lucky in 1 match, they go further. It is not fair to be almost top 8 and to have the same chance to go further as the 24th(who was like the worst of 3/4th of the competition).
To fight against the reality of stronger teams beating weaker teams, UEFA changes the format to ensure equity. Cant wait for them to go back to sanity.
As an American that only has a retirement league. I follow the EPL and Champions League religiously. As a fan it is great. I played soccer in leagues till I was 40, obviously as an amateur. As a player, I think the set-up for European professional football is terrible. Way too many games. Why do we need an (EPL) FA Cup, EFL Cup and also a UEFA Cup? Then add international games. Hopefully something will give before injuries ruin it.
To be fair to UEFA, I couldn't care less what the players think either. Only criticism I'd level at the new format is that winning the league phase doesn't seem to present an obvious benefit. (Reminds me of the NHL, but at least the winners of their league phase are awarded The President's trophy.) For instance, I worry for Chelsea that they're unprepared for the quality of teams that will drop down from the Europa League.
The new format was a double edged sword It brought less good teams an actual chance of success BUT we will have 90% of players get injured by 2025 at least 3 times because there is a billion competitions
