Then he could've found out that Eric Nam was born in Atlanta and was raised and educated in the U.S. all his life up till university. I’ve watched this like over 10 times and every single time I just get more impressed at how accurately and concisely Eric was able to translate their (pretty random) conversations and yet remain such an affable interviewer at the same time. And let’s not forget his cue cards are in Korean so he had to translate the questions to English on the spot and then translate their responses again back to Korean, so he was constantly switching gears. He is used to it cuz he often interviews KPop Idols and other celebrities on his own channel Dive Studios. In which most of the guests speaks English but, sometimes if they have all the members join he will translate everything for them into Korean. But, most of the time he speaks English. I love watching Korean Englishmen which the Avengers casts also met up with for lunch. There is an episode where Ollie, who is the best buds and side kick to Josh who speaks fluently in Korean, but Ollie doesn't speak Korean. Josh had special guests to surprise Ollie to help him learn and one of the guests was Eric Nam. It was funny watching Eric trying to help Ollie order food for everyone in Korean. Also, Eric said the fastest way he learned Korean was going out by himself and having to get around without help. So, the next episode is them dropping off Ollie in another part of the city by himself and told him, meet us at this restaurant in this city and you have to find ur own transportation to get there as well as they drive away. Luckly, Eric's tip worked cuz he was able to do it and got to the place before they did and also order food ahead of time for all of them.

Idk if u know about the TV show called Immortal Song, where different singers gets a theme and they have to perform to that theme. While they are judged by special judges that coincides to that weeks theme. Well, Eric Nam participated on this show and the theme was West Life greatest hits. The judge that showed up was Shane Filan of Westlife. They also if Korean singers do duets with singers from around the world sometimes that fun to watch too.

Just to clear things up: The interview was held in Korea 6 years ago and the previous interviewer needed a translator, so Tom had no way of knowing that Eric was American and was genuinely impressed by his English, he didn't have any bad or racist intentions at all.

I see nothing racist but professional curiosity: Tom Holland had to change/train/practice his own English accent with the best coach he found to sound as Newyorker/Queens as possible, naturally, after working so hard himself and thinking this guy was native South Korean with a perfect American accent he had to be very very curious as an actor about what kind of training or trick this guy could give him... it was a compliment, really...

That was an innocent question...He wasn't making fun of Eric...He didn't know that he was an American Korean...He was just curious...Also,if Eric is not offended then what are you guys hyping about? People like to make a big deal out of everything 😑😑😑
He was honestly pretty respectful- like yeah sadly people assume that people who speak Korean that it’s their first language- but he was really just asking it innocently.

Someone asked Tom in an interview how he learned to speak with an American accent in the movie (despite being British) and yet no one wants to call that racist.
Tom wasn't being racist. Stop being offended so easily people. I'm Asian American and if I was asked that question I would not be at all offended.

I’m Asian-American and trust me, when you see or hear Asian idols speak perfect English, you get curious too. They’re in Korea so it makes sense for Tom to be curious to ask. It’s understandable.

I think Tom was more surprised that Eric had an American accent when speaking English, not so much that he spoke English. I'd be surprised too, especially being in a foreign country.
Tom wasn't being racist at all he was giving a compliment. He was told that a Korean celeb was interviewing him! He is a great guy!
This interview took place in South Korea and Tom doesn't know Eric Nam before. To Tom he is maybe just an interviewer who is bilingual. There is know way any normal person would guess that a man he met in South Korea, Looking Korean and speaking good korean would NOT be of Korean nationality.

For someone who is fan of spiderman and who grew up watching Toby as spidey i admit its hard for me to accept when they've change the actors but only Tom makes me want to watch it in bigger screen.
So if someone asked Namjoon how he learned English would it be racist? Cause he speaks English pretty well considering he's a foreigner. Eric literally lives in Korea and speaks Korean so him speaking English obviously will grab their intention. Not everyone is bilingual too so you can't just assume they were born speaking two languages.

When you're Asian American and you experience this type of microaggressions all the time, it gets pretty annoying.

awkward hoseok - I know wasn't trying to be intentionally rude. But micro aggression is when you unintentionally do things like this that might offend someone. Every time a non-Asian asks me a question in the street, it always starts with "Do you speak English?" They're not intentionally trying to offend me, but they're unintentionally are.

Tbh I don't know why people think Tom is racist for what he said. If you're doing an interview on Korea, you assume that the interviewer is Korean as well. It is a small mistake, but it's not racist.

I understand that he could´ve guessed because of his name, but there are actually Koreans who speak English to a very good level to the point that they don´t have an accent, so Tom probably thought that Eric was just really good at English. I just don´t think his mistake is racist.

It would be racist if they were doing the interview in America doing the interview but they're in Korea so it's normal to assume that the people interviewing him are native Koreans who are raised there and use Korean as their primary language. If you go to a certain country, and you speak to someone there who actually looks like a native, probably you are expecting him/her to speak the official language of that country. How is that racist? it's called common sense :v he's in Korea, he's speaking to a korean, so he thought he was a korean native speaker.

P G because the guy spoke perfect English and Korean and this interview was in Korea so naturally Tom thought he was a Korean dumb ass.
There are tons of non-English speakers who actually know the language with such a level of profficiency, and that doesn't make them American, Australian nor British. So, no, being good at English is not a logical hint to know if someone is native or not. Tom isn't a fan like us, so he doesn't know Eric. How would he know then that he's american? by asking, of course.
Yep for example Taecyeon, Rapmon and Jackson are really good at speaking English and don't have Korean accent really, but any of them aren't Korean-Americans (nor British or Australian). So if someone would assume them to be Korean-Americans cause their English skills it would be false as well- though not racist or ignorant.
