My brother was denied an IEP because “he doesn’t have one of the 13 disabilities, so he doesn’t qualify for an IEP”. But my parents and I see that he is struggling to understand his homework and comprehend what he’s reading and it’s brought his grades down. We went to a psychologist and he said that an IEP would help him more than a 504. THe school straight out said he doesn’t fit the criteria, without even giving him an evaluation.

Thanks! I respect you ladies! Thank you for making it possible for people born with hardships to learn and have life. People do not make it up when they have doctor diagnosis and proof of something going on. I personally still have pics of stuff that happenend to me.

an accommodation is not a modification as she stated; if it was, it would be sp ed.

What if the child's illness causes him/her to start having certain mental illness such as depression and anxiety, ? The plan they have now is 504 but would later need an IEP plan because of his/her brought on mental illness due to the stress of the illness they have ?

I enjoyed watching this episode. I do have a question.
My question is, is there a Grade-wise switch that pre-K-12 is IDEA and then once in college, it switches to the 504 plan? I am curious.

Dysgraphia, an impairment in handwriting and the entire writing process seems as though it would need an IEP as opposed to simply accommodations. Correct?

What if the person is an adult over 21 is there any free services and free special education that they can receive I have a friend who’s deaf she has no education. She’s come from another country when she was 25 years old so she wasn’t eligible for the IEP And they threw her right into work but it’s hard labor and she’s having back pains and she really needs an education. She needs an education in ASL because she can sign but she never had formal education in ASL and she needs an education in school so that she can get a decent job and a desk job, I feel like she’s been classified

I then have a genuine question. Why isn't the stuff for IDEA and IEP just incorporated into a 504 plan and have a more dynamic assessment system?

@@eanymeanyminymo yep and 504 plan doesn't do shit depending on your teacher is and how much the school actually cares about you. To get the things you need you have to rely on your parents

I have a question: So 504 "according to the interviewer" may get modification along with the accommodations?

    • @thephilosopher5799

Yes I have autism and my 504 plan was modify a couple of times because it was not effective at first

The school we attend is opposite.. Its hard to aquire the 504, but they toss out the IEP'z left & right.

2SWeEeT2B4GOT10 I know this is late but I am dealing with the same about hard to get 504 plan. I found out that they get funding for the IEP but not the 504. I had my meeting when school starting and was promised my son would get all this special attention. He is diagnosed with autism, ADD & depression. He's still struggling and being called stupid by other kids and nothing I was promised was implemented! I'm having a IEP meeting next week and going to let them have it in a professional manner. I have my notes from that meeting and going to go over each item. I also plan to attend our next school board meeting.

People are not “in” special education. Special education is a series of support. Special ed is not a place. The IEP must occur in general education unless that is IMPOSSIBLE. And read Section 504. Related Service and special instruction is in 504. Procedural rights and Dispute resolution is the primary difference between 504 and IDEA. And funding. Schools get money for IDEA. They don’t for 504.
