Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. Amazing. They don't have this kind of motor shows anymore. There is a certain class and personal touch to this show.
Why waste the time? All the cars are SUV's, and mostly look the same.
Agree. Dumb SUV's and oversize trucks seem to be the fashion here in the USA. I am so disenchanted with modern motor vehicles that I have stuck with my Honda Civic Del Sol I bought brand new 30 years ago. Greetings from a Brit residing in the USA.

It’s a great video but classy? That is absolutely not what I was thinking. I can just imagine how those women were treated. It’d be hilarious if it wasn’t true. Well, it is hilarious, but I feel guilty about it.
I went to that show, I was 19 at the time. Went with two friends, took a day off from Regent St Polytechnic.... I remember bagging brochure after brochure - and then actually reading them when I got home. Everything on line today.
that's amazing back then it was an experience to behold unlike today's cars that all look the same!

As did other commentators here, I too visited that particular Car Show and remember well queuing up to get near the popular Car stands as an impoverished 17 yr old earning about £5.25 a month. I owned a 1938 MG TA that I restored and used it daily for work through all weathers. It cost me £50 borrowed from my Dad and I loved it. At £2 a month It took me 2 yrs to pay him back. My ideal car was the Daimler Dart SP250 and remember drooling over it at the show.
Wow! You visited that particular show! It sounds like a dream! I can imagine the thrill that must caused you back then! I've only been to one car show in Miami Beach back in 1991 and I loved it. But somehow this one looks glossier with those chrome accents, people dressed up nicely, and that lively music playing in the background! Thanks for sharing!
The picture quality is amazing for an auto show video from 1962.
Films were like 4K. Too bad it's on 480p on youtube.
Not that amazing, there was 70mm film back then and it still looks amazing and is used. And the footage quality takes a hit when it's made digital.

@@RandomShit169 The quality often takes a hit from digitizing, but it doesn't have to. If it's done properly, the quality can actually be made better, when possible flaws in the film - original or age related - are corrected during the process.
@@RandomShit169 70mm was extremely rare. The technicolor films were shown in cinemas were 35mm which today easily produces high definition on a computer screen. TH-cam compression does not show how good 35mm movies really are.
I owned a Daimler V8 Saloon just like the one at the end. What a beautiful car, how foolish I was to sell it. I am Italian but I loved your cars, British cars were at highest level in the world.

However i can compare you a Range Rover sport V8 from 2008 to an Honda Fr-V the Honda is way more reliable them the Range Rover the only thing that broke on the Honda is the light fuzes while the Range Rover i had to replace: Suspension, Diesel pump and Fuel tank and other parts that I don't know how to translate to English

in order to have a safe car, it needs to have features that make the cars look similar

That Jensen is stunning! As for Rover and their jet car, that was a very interesting concept which was quite close to my heart having worked where the engine was developed.
Jensen has the mighty Chrysler engine.
Went to the motor show Earls Court probably around late sixties early 70s with my father and my abiding memory of going was how amazingly crowded it was. Think if I had lost sight of my father would probably ever have seen him again. RIP dad.

The E Type must be a sight to behold when it was launched in 1960, almost 60 years ago, a work of art, while a lot of the supercars today are down right ulgy!

knowledge share Dear boy- I’ve owned 2 - first was a ‘64 coupe in ‘73 for 2 years (bought for 400 pounds!!!) exchanged for a ‘64 USA Ford Galaxie 500 (in UK) and then a ‘69 Roadster purchased in California kept for 6 years and sold for 3 times what I paid for it. Cost maybe $500 maintenance in
2008. That was mostly to replace poor repairs from unknowledgeable prior owners. Both were exceptionally reliable. And of course both cars were always loved and admired by all. So I cannot agree with you. Have you ever owned an E Type of any year? Perhaps you speak from jealousy not knowledge.

Fascinating footage. My father had a Morris 1100....turned into a real " rust bucket." Floor rusted through to give tantalising glimpses of the road.

They didn't rust here in New Zealand as no salt on the roads, only on the fish and chips ! They were called a "land crab" here . Slow and wobbly . . .
The 1100 didn't rust in Australia - Rotodip - they were amazingly good cars especially the larger engine
1100S. They could do 83MPH flat chat and you didn't have to slow down for corners on country main roads like Holdens and Ford Falcons had to. Wayne - the Land Crab was the Austin 1800. And the Morris 1100 was very sure footed - the opposite of your slow and wobbly description.
My first car was a second hand Morris 1100 here in Australia with the bench seat and gear shift that came up about 3 foot from the floor lol
Mine too and mum was so horrified when it went into garage for MOT and the quantity of rust found, but oh happy motoring days.
I remember my dad took me to the motor show that year. It was the same one he bought a Ford Anglia! Two years later we were off down the route nationals to the Costa Brava in Spain. Not a seat belt in sight and my baby brother on the back seat in his carry cot. "Health and safety", what the hell is that???

I was 12 at this time and I knew all the makes and models and all the performance figures. I could recognise every car at a distance, even in the dark I knew the configuration of the lights. Exciting days, happy days.
Wonderful newsreel bringing back great memories. I attended the 1960 Earl's Court Motor Show when in England from Australia on the then popular "Working Holiday". I did a training course with BMC at Oxford (Cowley and MG Abingdon), Birmingham (various factories), London. Cars had class back then. My cousin was a bigwig at Standard Motor Cars in Coventry. They were the days!

It is false that cars from that era needed to be fixed often. My grandfather was still driving 60s cars in the 1980s. As long as they were maintained they would only occasionally need a cheap repair.
@@bighands69 look i am 75 i grew up with 50-60s cars and motorbikes, thats when l learned to repair them, l know first hand how reliable british cars and motorbikes were from that era
@Ian Mangham unfortunately never owned that model l had the sv 52 that blew a head and gasket starter, had a short block at 60000 miles my first car was a singer 9 1936 looked like a morris 8 that threw a rod out of the side of the block, never had any luck with british cars apart from a 1938 morris 8, my last brit car was a 75 hillman avenger that was ok until my wife blew that one up when the thermostat housing snapped off, my worst experiences were fords mainly zephyrs l use to keep an axle in the boot, i could change an axle on the side of the road in 20 minutes, my mk1 convertible broke 6 in the 2 years l owned it
@@debeeriz you are only a few years older than me and i cut my "diy mechanicing" teeth on Moggie 1000's and Minis. I couldn't afford garage bills anyway so i learnt very quickly! But also enjoyed the years i spent fiddling about with cars.

So many beautiful cars. It is stunning to see how those cars looked new and unrestored.
One major difference is the emphasis on showing the inner workings of the machinery, with glass panels and cutaway models - back when the mechanics were simple and easy to understand.
What surprises me is the presenter's expectation that British cars would sell well in Europe after our entry to the Common Market. I don't think that happened except for some sports and luxury models: the low end products were designed to rust away and need replacing after two or three years.
The Ford Cortina was very popular, especially in France and Italy. I remember in 1962 on a trip abroad with my parents seeing them everywhere.
Every car these days has built in obsolescence as a standard item , I’ve had a few minis parked outside over the years all very fixable.
Everything looks great in hindsight.

And another sobering thought is that it was just 17 years after WW2 ended. Be like looking back on 2002 today. That's what makes you feel old

David Foreman - I was born in 1945 and went to this show. I was learning to drive at the time and my mate was the 'experienced' driver that sat in with me. I passed my test in March the following year. Loved driving then, and still do.
Ha HA! Graduated High School that year.... I wanted a Triumph Bonneville so badly I could taste the Castrol.
Lovely video. We had a Rover 3 Litre in the 1960's. Great car. Then got a Citroen DS 20, streaks ahead of all other cars. Beautiful design .
Right after this was made the British car industry goes into a nose dive mainly due to lack of investment and union action, it never recovers.
And diabolical and confused management by committee. BMC for example.

Given the video resolution is only 480p the detailed picture quality and colour saturation, and for 1962, is outstanding. The cars weren't bad either, back to an era when cars were still motorcars.

2:21 Jensen CV8, brand new one about £3,500 in 1965, absolute star. First saw this in the TV show The Baron and have drooled ever since.

I had a 67 Jag Etype in High School (70-72), now have a 67 Etype Roadster which I've owned since 1980.
I had a Ferrari in high school but traded it in on a rolls Royce and he chauffeured me to my classes.
@@mikecastellon3022 That's pretty amazing. I bought my first Jag, a Tan 67 Coupe in 1970 when I was a Junior in High School. I traded a Pontiac Catalina + $2800 for that car. (You couldn't by the wheels for that much today). I sold it to a man in Denver when I joined the USAF (a decision I regretted for the rest of my life). It wasn't until 1980 that I was able to get another 67 Etype, this one a Roadster, which I still own to this day. I don't know if I can post links, but I'll try to post to a Flickr page that has both my cars. The Tan Jag picture is as the car looks today (still owned by a man in Denver). There was one parked down the road from me all through the '60s, in fact first appeared there in the '50s I think. Two-tone emerald green top and white underneath, as I remember. Looked kinda pretty and sporty but in reality was rubbish, from a review I've seen. Very poor quality interior. But now tell me how wring I am!
@@wayinfront1 the Met was styled in USA by Nash, its a baby Nash Rambler, although made at Longbridge England, these were aimed at a family for a second car for commuting, (the 50s Smart Car). finished production in 1961, Ahh so you saw a Berkshire Green and Frost White example, i have one of those in my Met collection. I love em, doors interchangable, a chrome side fender Metropolitan script mofit ONLY on one side, opposite side to drivers side,never had an Austin badge. Very easy to work on, easy for parts, These were were built well by Austin and the interior is very long lasting and comfy, i dont always believe reviews or what others think, try it yourself you might have second thoughts. My Mets get more attention than my 56 Olds, 58 Buick also my 58 Thunderbird. Ive restored two of my Metros, i know them well, and they are of good quailty build, regardless what others say

I reckon that if British Leyland had have started to galvanised their cars in the late 70s ,starting with the Rover SD1 they would still be in business now
My dad had that coupé Rover but my mum had to sell it for nothing after he passed as we needed cash 😢
My uncle Bill Strickland (yes, the famous race car driver) bought his E- Type Jaguar in 1962. He barely drove it, stayed under cloth. He bought at the time a full body set of the replacement rubber seals for it (he knew they would ware out in time) in 1998 a man offered him $11,000 for the set... he refused the sale.

I was at that show as a 13 year old with my friend. Our aim was to collect beautifully coloured brochures of our favourite brands - they were so nicely done then. I’d take them home and pour over them for hours learning all the specs by heart. Now all you get is a blurry picture on your smartphone
Mind you the food in the cafeteria was really naff!! We drove up into London in my friend’s Dads’ new Fiat 2300. Classy car. Straight to the Earl’s Court car park. No bloody congestion charges, no rip off ULEZ, no speed cameras, no stupid 70mph speed limits. What great times they were. Oh to go back.

It wasn't my fault or of my parents. We had the Austin Mini 1300. The Austin 1300/Glider Mk III. The Austin Allegro Estate MKIII. The Austin Maestro LE. Double Weber 1600 MG Maestro. The Rover 213 and 213S. My first car the Rover 114 Gta/Metro. The first Dutch dealer delivered Rover 620 in green with Grey bumpers( altered immediately to green as well).
Incredible that Ford was being described as British here. That's how much manufacturing pull the UK still had then, even for American marques.
I bought that very same Lotus Elan featured on the 1962 Motor show and when I bought it in 1966, it had been thrashed to within an inch of it’s life, but being a young petrolhead , I couldn’t wait to get my backside in one and I spent 50% of my ownership repairing it and only kept it for 6 months as the insurance company I had it insured with went bust. It was the time of Emil Suvundra with his Fire Auto and Marine company fraud.and my company, London and Midland followed suit.
Reminds me of the business titans of those days: Emil Savundra, John Bloom of Rolls Razor and "It's no sin to make a profit," the asset strippers John Bentley, Lord Hanson, Lord White ...
That's an interesting story, those elan's are worth big bucks now, thrashed or not!, the david frost trial by television of the infamous Suvundra is on here as well, he really was an arrogant pos with no regard for his clients.

@@stevewilson6390 I guess, looking back they sold bucket loads of cars, vans and trucks in the 60s but still wound up skint. Some exciting and technologically superior vehicles later on, coupled with great as campaigns....yet to no avail. Lost out on the image stakes, I guess the likes of Ford won out on pure kudos....such a shame.
I love some of those great old cars shown on those films. Have them all on DVD at the moment. I dunno why the nation somehow forgotten virtually all of those old brands that are now sadly no longer with us such as Triumph & Riley.

God has a Law called the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20). These Laws include do not lie, do not steal, don’t put others gods before Him (Exodus 20)

If we really went over God’s Laws in the Bible, every single one of them, it can really expose how much of a sinner we truly are and because we have all committed these acts our punishment is Hell because God’s standard is perfection.
Our good works cannot get us into Heaven. That’s like you steal a soda from the store but you tell the judge, “hey judge I give to the orphanage, I do community service.” The judge will not care about what you did. You stole something that was not yours so therefore the Judge is going to find you guilty. God is the same way.
But, this Judge is a loving Judge who does not want to sentence you for your crimes. He sent His Son Jesus Christ to come and take the punishment for your sins and if you Repent of your sins and accept jesus Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior then you will be saved from the sentence. Jesus loves you and is not willing that any should perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16) God bless

You'll love this. My first job after High School, while waiting to be accepted into Public Service, was a car park attendant in the heart of the financial district of Melbourne. I drove and parked the best and the worst cars of 1977. I regret not reporting that I scratched a Rolls Royce while parking, but felt no shame when I found out the person that leased it, had gone bankrupt and fled the country. Learning experience 101. Love.
