Sophya's Coffee Spill At 3-4 weeks, it can still be tricky to tell. You look for clues and then keep an eye on them to see how they develop. Six weeks is usually when sexing becomes a lot easier.
You’ll see people who claim to be able to tell males from females (non-sexlink and non-autosexing) during the first or second week. Except for obvious cockerels or birds from a line that tend to have certain sex-specific traits, chicks can’t be sexed that early. Those charts with shape of wings and feather patterns, etc. are fairly useless for most breeds. I’ve had people claim to always be right using those methods, yet when I posted wing pics of sex-link or autosexing chicks, they didn’t do any better than if they’d just flipped a coin, lol b

(I should add that they can’t be sexed by appearance. You can vent sex or DNA sex at hatch.)

You gave alot more clues than many others on TH-cam that I've watched. I never knew that males stand differently! Very interesting! Your chicks are really pretty! Just subscribed to your channel!

It isn’t a gender stereotype. In most species the male is more aggressive, protective, bolder, stronger, etc. This is great to ensure survival of the species. Females also have traits that are more nurturing. They have to have, feed, keep the body temp normal where applicable, and other motherly traits and tasks. This is also great to ensure survival of the species. Both are necessary. Hens will also keep their heads down foraging more than roosters. Roosters will display dominance by climbing on things and flexing. They also are more alert and look up as they instinctively look for aerial predators. This protects the hens while they look for food and provide for the chicks. A hen will run and the rooster will move forward to protect them. Some roosters are better than others. Some decided to wear skinny jeans. Stay away from those lol

At this age, however, sexual differences aren’t always discernible. My main point is that you shouldn’t use behavior as a guaranteed indicator of sex.

The only reason I'm able to sex my chicks is just because I've hatched so many that generally I can tell the usual trends in my little flock when the chicks hatch. I have a neat little mix of breeds here but the chicks tend to take after my ee/barred rock roo more than their moms.
    Sexing is hard!

Can you vent sex at 4 weeks? I just found out about all of this!! I am learning as I go! I have always wanted chickens, but my husband has said, "not now!" LOL! He came home with 4, 2day old EE's and only a little bag of feed for me!!!!! I have watched videos for years, because I just love them, so I knew that I needed to get them warm and fast!, water and thank heavens he bought the medicated starter feed! I fell and broke my hip, so I am in a wheel chair!!! Of all times for him to bring me babies to take care of and my cat was having kittens as he sat the box of little chicks in my lap!!!! Oh, my heavens!!!! I had a chick in one hand and a 30 minute old kitten in the other, while laughing with tears running down my face!!! I told him what I needed, what I had to have for the babies!!! It was late and I live in a little small, very small town in East Texas, so no stores to get a heat lamp, but he went ( with a lot of grumbling, lol ) and found bedding! He found an old plastic storage bin in my garage and I used my heating pad under it for heat!! LOL!!! Wahlah!!!! I have a brooder!! He had also bought a little dog food feeder for the feed, lol! I told him to get on line and to find out how to make a waterer out of a plastic bottle!!! He did and it was a large yogurt container and a plastic bowl, lol! Works great! HEHEHE!! Up every 30 minutes turning the heating pad back on!! It took 2 days until he could find a lamp and another 2 days for my heat bulb to arrive from Amazon! We were hit really hard with the Polar Vortex and all supplies here are gone!!! Oh, and I have a window screen and books to hold it down, on top to protect them from the 5 cats and 2 dogs who get locked up at night now, so I can sleep!!!! I also have a spray bottle with water and lavender oil to spray any animal that gets to close, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm getting quick on the draw!!! They are learning to stay away and they don't know it's me doing it from my bed or wheelchair!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😁😁😁 Any way, have a lovely day and thank you for any help or advice!!!!
