Structural Strengthening with Carbon Fiber

  • We've had the pleasure in wrapping (11) Concrete Columns in Oakland, California. This particular project took 11 days to complete from preparation of the concrete surface, saturation of the fiber, and installation. Most columns were wrapped with 3 layer, while others were 4 to 5 layers of carbon fiber based on the structural engineers calculations.

    What about the area between the two wraps?

      Structural Engineers deemed it not necessary to wrap the small areas of where the mezzanine floor would be installed.

    What is the main objective in this project, Is it the columns are slender columns and not has enough main rebar(design mistake) or loads took in account before structural design like earthquake or wind is not in the safe side thanks

      With the addition of a floor being installed on these columns. The structural engineers called out for the concrete columns to be strengthen to take on the new load using these pre-existing concrete columns as support. With the completion of Carbon Fiber applied the columns are now much stronger to take on such load.

      An example would be from a project I am working on. On top of Existing 4 levels of Underground Basement Carpark, we are going to build a 5 storey Commercial/residential Building. Existing car park design did not consider future construction of new building on top of it. The result is, existing columns doesn't have the capacity to carry additional loadings, so we have to strengthen the some columns and also we need to to micro pile underpinning coz the existing piles doesn't have the capacity as well to carry additional loads. Hope this explains/helps.
