  • Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta : TOP 10 TIPS FROM A LOCAL
    Albuquerque hosts the largest hot air balloon festival in the world and is considered the most photographed event in the world! I am lucky enough to live in Albuquerque, so I've spent years attending, and working at the Albuquerque balloon fiesta. I put together this video to give you the top tips everyone should know when attending the balloon fiesta for the first time. The 2020 Balloon fiesta was canceled, I am looking forward to bringing you content from the 2021 Balloon Fiesta!
    Albuquerque has been hosting this hot air balloon festival since 1972 and currently features approximately 600 balloons.
    The first gathering of 13 balloons was held in the parking lot of Coronado Mall in the Albuquerque heights. The following year, 13 countries took part in the "First World Hot Air Balloon Championship", the world's largest ballooning event, held at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds. The number of balloons steadily increased, year after year with 600 in 1988 and 903 balloons in 1999. The organizers of the Balloon Fiesta registered more than 1000 balloons in the year 2000. As time progresses it's getting harder and harder to find areas to land in the City of Albuquerque. The number of hot air balloons is now limited to ~600.
    This is one of the MANY things to do in Albuquerque!!
    The 2021 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta schedule is as follows
    Friday October 1: Albuquerque Aloft at area elementary schools.
    Saturday October 2: AM Mass Ascension, PM Balloon Glow / Fireworks
    Sunday October 3: AM Mass Ascension, PM Balloon Glow / Fireworks
    Monday October 4: Balloon Launch & Competition
    Tuesday October 5: Balloon Launch & Competition
    Wednesday October 6: Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension
    Thursday October 7: Kids Day: AM Special Shapes Rodeo, PM Special Shapes Glowdeo / Fireworks
    Friday October 8:AM Special Shapes Rodeo, PM Special Shapes Glowdeo / Fireworks
    Saturday October 9: AM Mass Ascension, PM Balloon Glow / Fireworks
    Sunday October 10: AM Mass Ascension, PM Balloon Glow / Fireworks
    For the full schedule of events see -balloonfiesta.com/files/galle...
    Be sure to reference balloonfiesta.com/Maps-Direct... for directions regarding the balloon fiesta. The city changes traffic patterns to allow for one way cars to the park, and exiting the park after the event.

    4:30 is not early enough- you’d better leave by 4am or 330- the traffic is terrible! And note masks are no longer required.

    I was born in 1972 and so this trip (my first vacation post-pandemic) was the highlight of my year, celebrating my own 50th birthday.!! I learned about it when I was in my 20s and just made it happen. Finally and WOW, it was so worth it. I wish I'd seen this video before our trip! Though informative and exciting, thankfully, locals were friendly and gave us the same tips. We were not able to get there before the last weekend and so we really risked not getting to see the show due to rain. So planning for several days is important. Get up early for the morning sessions! Yes 3:30 early.
    Starbucks opens at 4am during Fiesta who knew? Yes it's COLD, we're from Houston, Texas so a light windy 42° and we're freezing! Once the sun comes out you can peel away the layers. Sunblock is a good idea. Balloon rides are available to the public pre festival and post festival. I had been really curious, but byy the time I figured it out it was too late to book. This won't be my last so I'll do it next time. Also check out the train. You pay $2 to Santa fe it's an all day pass to shop, eat, visit museums and historic chapels! Thank you, I loved your video, it brought back the memories and it was just a few weeks ago, lol. 🙏🏼💯

      Thanks! If you can afford it the museum meal/viewing sounds awesome! I’ve never done any of these options. The chaser club just has a nice area sectioned off where you can sit. The park is a big open field and it gets really really crowded.

    • @SwiftyTravels
      @SwiftyTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so the main event is largely over by 8:30-9 in the morning. If you arrive super early there are some picnic areas, but during the height of the fiesta when the balloons are taking off in masses, there are so many people, you would not be able to enjoy from a blanket. (The grass may be wet as well). More people were out sitting in the grass for the evening balloon glow events.

    Lisa - would I be able to use an all terrain rollator walker to get around or are the crowds just too large for this? Would the Concierge Service be recommended instead? Pricey but the driver would know where everything is and could get us from place to place relatively quickly?

    • @SwiftyTravels
      @SwiftyTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest challenge is walking into the park from the parking lot- if you get there a little late you have to park really far away. If you have a handicap sticker, that would make it easiest. - or do park and ride. Once you are in the park, you are not really missing much if you are in one part of the park or the other. You could walk in- but there would likely not be anywhere to sit. The balloons are in a big grassy field and it gets muddy. Once the balloons start going up it would be really hard to walk in that crowd with the walker, but you could easily stay around the outside of the field and see all the balloons flying all around you. If you can afford it the conceirge service might be really nice to go around in a golf cart! I've never experienced the VIP service!

    • @LenLindsay
      @LenLindsay ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SwiftyTravels Lisa ... I think I will get tickets for the Concierge service on Thursday morning. Their FAQ says that only six are available though - so I better get my tickets first thing when ticket sales open tomorrow (April 7) ... are ticket sales done online or by phone (or both, and is one preferable?) Thanks again for your wonderful help!

    Awesome tips! I'm going this year and wondering 2 things: 1. Can you see balloons from Sandia hotel or are there places you recommend as I'll be bringing elderly relative? 2. Do you recommend the Gondola Club, Chaser's Club or Concierge since bringing someone who can't walk far? Thanks a million!!

    • @SwiftyTravels
      @SwiftyTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Sandia hotel is a great place to stay, very conveniently located to the park. You would only be able to see the balloons from your room if you had windows facing west, and they will be at a distance but should be beautiful! I have never paid for Chasers club or Gondolal club but I would recommend if you are bringing someone who is elderly if they can't walk far. The park gets crazy crowded, so these areas will provide a comfortable place to be away from the crowds. I think park & ride is the best option for you. You have to buy park and ride tickets in advance. I don’t think there are any hotels with excellent views except maybe sandia casino or maybe marriott pyramid. The balloons don’t fly all over town like they used to they stay pretty close to the park because there’s not as many places to land.

    probably not an easy question? I love the information in your video, thank you. My mom turns 90 but cannot bring her for long walks. I am wondering if there are any places above the festival or near the festival where you can see the views for someone who cannot come and do heavy work or walking at this point. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    • @SwiftyTravels
      @SwiftyTravels  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Let's see, you could drive in and park if you get there early enough you could get a really close spot- or if they have a handicap sticker you could park in the super close handicap area and watch from the car or go in that entrance the North side and just stay close to the entrance for a nice view (and you could bring a chair). There doesn't seem to be any other close places since they have the roads closed off from each direction all around and it kind of depends which way the wind is blowing. I found a nice over look, at the very North end of the city. Take Wyoming or Louisiana all the way to the end as far North as it will go and it's a nice place to park and see the balloons if you are on the East side of town. Maybe also from the Sandia casino parking lot?? Just some ideas

    • @SwiftyTravels
      @SwiftyTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely bring your young kids! They love it! A carrier type setup would be better than a stroller - some people bring wagons. The field gets very crowded so its hard to wheel around a stroller or wagon. I do have some videos on my channel from the event this past year if you want to take a look. Park and ride might be the best option since it would drop you off at the front. The longest walk could be from the parking space! The kids will love it!!!

    1.especially the first few days leave extra early. Traffic is usually the worst on the first day
    2. It is definitely cold in the morning but make sure you can easily remove layers as it is already warm by breakfast
    3. Anything can happen 😂 in 2019 the first day we had fog for the first time in Balloon fiesta history. But high winds aloft and possible thunderstorms in the area can affect the flight so always allow for preferably at least 2 or 3 days. Here in Oklahoma we have 3 day events and we usually only get one or two good days
    5. We usually at least try and inflate and stand up on the field if we are not able to fly, so if balloons come out (not just fly) you cannot reuse the tickets
    I personally prefer the north end of the field, it is much less crowded that the south end. Also most pilots love to talk to people and answer any questions you might have
    I have been going with my dad since I was 4 weeks old and I am 20 now. We have the black and yellow balloon at the very bottom of the screen at the balloon museum at 0:33 it is somewhat similar to the red and yellow balloon in the same clip. Great video 👍

If you come on a Sat or Sunday, especially opening weekend, plan on rolling into the parking lot early in the 5am hour to ensure you get in in time. And, the dawn patrol at 6am is gorgeous! :-)

They need to be reserved way in advance and many are quite pricey. Check out: balloonfiesta.com/RV-Information . For the app, just search for 'balloon fiesta' at the app store it's called 'ABQ Int Balloon Fiesta' and the icon is white and says 'FIESTA' in red letters. Admission is $15 per session. There is either a 'morning session' or an 'afternoon session' and it is $15 each time you attend a session.
