Mystery of the Ape Cave: A Hidden Gem Hike Through Lava Tubes near Portland!

In this episode, we venture into the mysterious Ape Cave in Washington-a volcanic wonder unlike any other! 🌋 Located at the base of Mt. St. Helens, Ape Cave is one of the longest lava tubes in North America, stretching over 2.5 miles underground. But why the name “Ape Cave”? Some say it’s inspired by eerie tales of Bigfoot sightings or a mysterious ape lurking in its depths… Could the legends be true? 👣👀 Stay tuned to find out the truth behind this mystery!
Our adventure begins with a short, scenic hike through dense forests to the cave’s entrance-a magical, moss-draped opening that feels straight out of a Ghibli film. 🌿✨ We descend via a steel stairway into the cool darkness of the lava tube, where we hike about a mile to the end of the Lower Cave. At the end, we enter a narrow, claustrophobic funnel that shrinks from 3 feet wide to nothing-perfect for thrill-seeking spelunkers!
For the second half, we check out the Upper Cave, a more challenging boulder traverse that takes us deeper into the heart of this lava-formed marvel. After navigating this subterranean world, we finally emerge back into the sunlight, exhilarated and in awe of this unique natural wonder.
