    Great footage thanks! Been in the South Island last 7 years and after a month in Marllborough Sounds last year I exited and realised how much I miss the Hauraki Gulf and NE coast. Our boat used to live in Mahurangi Harbour and Moturekareka ended up being the favourite anchorage. 😊

      @@FlyingboatsRCG moturekareka and mahurangi are great! Usually i would be coming from a bit further away and great barrier was my goal, so moturekareka is more of a rare treat for me. If you are in the south island, able tasman is my favorite, especially with shallow draft. The sounds are magestical but a bit hard work with the deep water and you always need to be ready to move because the wind blows straight down all the channels.

      @@dominictarrsailing Abel Tasman is lovely, but quite a small area overall. Ideal for trailer boats or multis that are happy drying out. For the South Island (or beyond) I'll vote for Stewart Island as favourite cruising ground. It's simply stunning, better for sailing, nice clear water, wildlife, and not too many boats. Just temperatures can be pretty cool and if the weather systems are in full flow, it can be the wind factory. Lots of good anchorages to hole up in though. Pretty much NZ as it was once, before all the development particularly if you can make it to the southern end of the island -glorious!

    Nice video. I owned Cleo mid to late 90's and had many a good trip on her. Pleased to see the platform I made stood the test of time. She had a new yanmar in her back then and did motor quite well. Good luck with the sale. Hope someone will bring it back to its former state.

      Thanks for the comment! I have many questions! Was the deck painted white when you owned her? (The gelcoat is tan underneath that)
      Were the sails new? Did she have wind speed meter then? Grey carpet on the ceiling?
      I sailed her around the north island solo in 2020! Engineless, through a gale off waiarapa coast and another one in cook strait! That was coming down the east coast. Had a better run on the way back, did the west coast all on one tack!

      @@dominictarrsailing The decks were mainly white with cream coloured on the anti slip areas. She did not have wind gear back then. The grey carpet on the ceiling is front runner which she had from new, stops the condensation etc. I put new sails on her late 90's. I also installed a capstan which you didnt appear to have anymore. The interior timberwork is walnut hence the dark colour.

      What about the maori carving on the post one the bulkhead?
      Oh and there is a proper commercial foredeck hatch. The bit around that was painted red (matching the engine room door) but then its got white paint over that.

    Moturekareka was once owned by a family friend and I used to sail out there in my old Zeddie and camp there. The island was once owned by Mr. Hansen, he purchased the Rewa and had her sunk as a breakwater, in front of a small dwelling, shared with his wife. which was removed by DOC a few years ago. A second hermit arrived at the island after Hansen. He was called Snow and I think he was the only survivor of a yacht grounding near East Cape. He was there in the early 70's when I used to visit.He had a hut in the flat area within the mined part of the island and another one built of tar paper close to the two drives behind the trees by the wharf. I recall a round or two of schnapps aboard Cleo when Herman owned her.

      @peterswatton7400 interesting! I dont know much about the ownership history, but at a raven owner's dinner i heard about a previous owner how was a keen racer, and a couple of prize plaques... someone got her new sails, i estimate in 2000s. And windsensor and speedo (which i discovered no longer worked, shortly after purchase) someone also painted the deck and the interior while (from dark wood) but didnt do a terribly good job and its flaking now. (And they just painted around things didnt remove the deck hardware) I kinda want to paint it but the only acceptable options are to do a good job of it, or just leave it scruffy. So i have kept it scruffy but seaworthy.

    Obviously you don’t need / want to have two boats.
    The Raven is a very sweet boat, and sails very well.

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@markthomasson5077 thats a good question! The answer is that although cleo is a comfortable space at anchor, it is more difficult to find a comfortable anchorage because its deep draft, 1.5m. YL is only 0.6m just over my knees. Also, YL can dry out level, but cleo lies over 45 degrees. On YL i dry out frequently. Its great for maintance, or riding a storm or just because i want to be in that spot. It also expands significantly the places i can go. In 6 years or solidly living on cleo, i havnt yet anchored everywhere in the easy cruising of the hauraki gulf, northland, and bay of plenty, but i made good progress towards that. But in YL i can get into shallow esturaries... so now i have no hope to go everywhere haha.
      A catamaran is also more comfortable at sea! It doesnt roll going down wind or becalmed.
      But also a monohull is just a bit normie for me. I needed something a bit weirder... and a minimalist cat with a proa on the deck... no one else is doing that!
      Cleo does have some good advantages though, the space is one of them and another is that it tacks very well, so its much more agile in close quarters. Thats the biggest one for me. But iI dont thing.i coukd build a boat on the deck of cleo. Otoh, cleo is a solid fiberglass hull and will never need the kind of structural restoration ive dont on YL.
      Anyway, only half way though the summer here, (and good cruising until may, really) and YL is going back into the water this week! Would you like to come to New Zealand and take over Cleo?

    • @dominictarrsailing
      @dominictarrsailing  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @markthomasson5077 hmm but the biggest monohull advantage is that the boat market has an oversupply of durable old plastic boats. They are soooo cheap and only getting cheaper. Once upon a time a raven 26 was worth a lot of money and the cheapest way to get a boat was to build one. That is certainly not the case anymore. Unfortunately most of these fiberglass keelers are not really designed for simplicity and pragmatic living-on, so you just have to make the most of it...
