    I love that you reacted to this! I was lucky enough to get to see it live back in 2017 after going through a very similar experience to what Sam did just several months earlier, and when I tell you I sat there SOBBING the whole time it crushed me. Also I totally see your criticism of Adam as a character but there is definitely missing context in the script about that relationship being used to show how relationships with others and the way you view them can change while experiencing grief. Also I totally wish the second to last song was the last song I feel like it hits a little harder as an ending and then they could just have her getting up and starting the car without singing a full song but that’s just my two cents haha.

    About "Say the Word" and Sam & Adam's relationship in general (or how I interpret it, at least): Sam wants more but she can't/ doesn't communicate that, it's like Adam is still in the "simple", more childish stage of their relationship and Sam is ahead of him. She literally overthought him offering her food bc she's so frustrated but she doesn't say anything. In Say the Word, we get a dual perspective of this. She's asking Adam to be proactive and also to give her a push towards staying. "Say the word and I might have to stay", she's desperate to find anything that will make her stay.
    But Adam's lyrics are pretty telling as well, especially the "whatever you say". He wants her to make a move as well, he wants to do/be whatever she wants, he's letting her take the lead, being passive, probably because he's afraid to.
    And this all culminates in "Run away with me" where he's asking her to go with him, being active but his vision is the opposite of Sam's, talking about reminiscing on the past and building a house and planning, whilst Sam is eager to forget and be spontaneous.
    That is what makes both him and Sam's mother this symbol for unwanted, overbearing safety, in a bad way. Safety that means that even the smallest possibility of danger is inacceptable and therefore so is change.

      ooooh that's such a good analysis. What gets me about Runaway With Me, that's essentially what Kelly asks Sam to do but they never got to. But Kelly tells Sam to runaway with as something for Sam because she thought Sam wants to, but for Adam, it's something for them to do together as a relationship, as a duo, essentially still having, as you said, that security

    • @Al_-cf1dj
      @Al_-cf1dj 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rhysfayne2221 exactly! The whole "maybe not today, maybe tomorrow" and the callback to simple as that cement Adam as kind of a foil to Kelly in that way as well. Kelly demands it, says it has to happen NOW. Adam though, still wants to build a life with plans and gives Sam time to think it over. Arguably, his approach is healthier but he's waited too long already and Sam is sick of waiting
      (Also holy crap I forgot I wrote this, past me was so based)

    Purely based on the sound of the music (not plot or lyrics) this sometimes gives me Tuck Everlasting vibes, which is another of my favourite musicals and super underrated.
    Also you totally know Adam from somewhere else, he is played by Ben Fankhauser who played Davey in Newsies (he is the reason I discovered this amazing musical and I totally recommend listening to more of his stuff, especially stuff from concept albums and not from musicals)

    See, what's weird for me is "Run Away with Me" has been performed out of context for so long, long before this full album was released. Like, I heard this song performed by swoonworthy male singers like Jeremy Jordan and Aaron Tviet, and it's such a beautiful, romantic song when performed in that setting! It's just that in context... it's not what Sam wants right now. So that cognitive dissonance still messes me up. But I do recommend checking out those performances, maybe you'll like the song better without context too, haha.

    i literally paused to clap when you paused "The Proposal" and said about having to remember that this is happening in Sam's head, this is how she's perceiving the situation, etc. because that's the point of the song in the actual musical! Adam is literally just talking about food and Sam is like "oh he wants to sleep with me" xD no, Adam just wants tacos. he's a bit of a dumbo and we love him for it

    Haven't even watched the video, but yes yes yes, you're reacting to this. When this cast recording came to Spotify I had a period where I listened to The Mad Ones all the time and I think it has brilliant music. I especially love Run away with me (I honestly want a cd that is just twenty different Broadway performers singing that exact song in their version, that would be my favorite thing probably), but Freedom is so awesome and the story is very sad, but wonderful and relatable even if you haven't gone through the same.
    I think also Run away with me sounds so romantic to me because I first heard it out of context. I listened to like ten different versions of it before I ever heard the cast recording.

    • @Al_-cf1dj
      @Al_-cf1dj 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think Adam is a pretty important second tie to normalcy in the musical. He's another attachment Sam needs to let go of to get what she wants and his song serves quite nicely to create a contrast between his and Kelly's/Sam's visions of running away. I wrote a long comment about this already though, so I won't bore you 😅
      I do read Sam and Kelly as at the very least queerplatonic but I also think Sam has genuine love for Adam, say the word is too real for her not to

    • @twist_ending7545
      @twist_ending7545 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Al_-cf1dj fun fact: in a/the stage version of Go Tonight, Sam says "everything I love" instead of "everything I'm not". So she outright says she loves Kelly! That, along with everything else, I think makes it clear that she loved Kelly romantically :)

    • @Al_-cf1dj
      @Al_-cf1dj 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@twist_ending7545 fair enough, I think it can be true that she was both in love with Kelly and genuinely cared for/was into Adam. • @kateorgera5907
      @kateorgera5907 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Was she punished? Or was it just a horrible accident, and Sam needs to learn that accidents happen but you need to live your life anyway? And Sam decides to travel at the end, so I would argue that punishment was not the message the show.

    • @Al_-cf1dj
      @Al_-cf1dj 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Uh where was it ever stated that the driver who killed Kelly was drunk?? She wasn't even driving either?? Who is supposed the drunk driver here??? Kelly isn't punished by the narrative because the whole premise of the musical is that she's dead. Hell, her free spirit tendencies have nothing to do with her death and the musical even has a moment where Sam thinks about how that wouldn't have happened if she had went along with Kelly's demand to run away. The female lead follows her dream and runs away which is framed as good by the narrative.
      You're making this musical out to be anti feminist when it's literally one of the only shows I can think of with a predominantly female cast that's treated like individual people, goes out of its way to point out a double standard and ends with the female lead rejecting societal expectations!!!
