I did my big chop years ago and it was at one of the most difficult times in my life. I honestly think it's the only thing that helped me through it. Black women and WOC with non western standard beautiful hair types, all have such a similar story. Especially if you are raised in a household in which your natural hair is ridiculed and changed while you're young which is typical in a black household. Just in the last few years black women have been able to embrace and acknowledge their need to care for their natural hair. I can only imagine that would be much harder on many more of us still if there wasn't more embrace of our natural hair as a cultural movement. At least now you can chop your hair start over and there is an understanding that you are "going natural." You still get met with people shaming you for your hair if it isn't long after years or if you have kinky curls rather than smooth loose curls. But I think it's important to embrace your hair and take back your own power of how you view your hair and what you see in yourself as beautiful. Chopping my hair off was like returning to a time before the first person ever called it "ugly" or releasing the idea of always worrying about it getting wet or straighten it every weekend before I returned to school. Or even having a guy see me in between relaxers. When you start over you get to reset and change your negative relationship with your hair and yourself. I've never met a girl that has regretted her big chop. Everyone has always said it was exactly what she needed and they wish they would have done it sooner.✨✨✨👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 SO WELCOME TO THE CLUB SAMANTHA 💕💕💕💕💕

Not saying what you said is anything wrong, but fcked it’s become the odd to be real or natural. I love my girls who have had cosmetic work done, Ive been there too. But a raw part of yourself that you’ve held a deep shame about for no reason but for everyone else’s opinion. Love you so much Sam, get it girl ✌🏼

I am not white enough, I am not black enough. Girl I felt that. I am also mixed and I am working everyday towards loving my hair. I used to always keep them straight but now I have 2 months rocking my natural curls. Enough with the heat, the expensive products, the straightening creams. I've had enough of that, time to love what my dominican side gave me. ❤

Since Sammi posted that Pic on insta with her new hair, I started to rock my natural hair, it's still complicated but she gave me so much confidence so thank u Sammi! ❤️

@@sirajdinesara1998 I didn't have people mock my hair but I had everyone telling me how good I looked every time I wore my hair straight. I was also a teenager at the time so it really stuck with me that in order to be beautiful I needed to keep my hair straight. It's those little comments, good or bad, that stick with us. We shouldn't let other people's idea of beauty define us. ❤

So relatable!! Never feel like you aren’t black enough! even if you are 100% black, natural hair is a struggle at first. It was for me, but 7 years in I’ve figured it out. Keep focusing on the health of your hair. Do a porosity test, which will help you determine the types of products that are best for your hair type. That’s the biggest thing that’s helped me. You look gorgeous btw 💗

I'm so glad you did a talk video about this bc I have followed you on YT since your uni days and I feel like your most recent videos (the past year) have resonated with me so much. I chopped off 15 inches of my hair about 6 years ago for similar reasons. I was in a really low point in my life, probably the lowest I had felt ever, and I just felt like my hair was so crazy and erratic that I couldn't walk into a healthier mindset with it. I chopped it off and told myself that I would use the time to start anew and work on loving myself. It's been a long journey for me, but you're doing great! I'm glad you did this for you

Thanks for sharing your experience with your natural hair. I’ve struggled with my hair for years as well (I’ve gone from natural to relaxed and back again a million times). My mom doesn’t have the same hair as I do and she relaxed it when I was very young, so I was never taught how to truly care for and love my natural hair. I’ve been thinking about doing another big chop for ages, but I’ve been hesitant because my edges took a hit after I gave birth a year ago. I’m now trying to have another baby and I’m worried about going short because I experienced a lot of hair loss after my first. Watching you, however, has definitely inspired me to take the leap and make the cut!!! You look gorgeous no matter what your hair looks like; I can’t wait to follow your journey!

A beautiful woman however way you look. It’s the best feeling placing your hands directly on your scalp isn’t it? I did the big chop twice myself in life and found each time very personally liberating. Even though I don’t really wear my hair out, it’s amazing how much misplaced value can be put on something that ultimately has little value in defining who we are as people. I’m happy for you, Ms Samantha Maria!

I've went back and forth since, growing and cutting off, etc. It can be transformative. I get it! You look gorgeous either way, doll. I'm happy for you that you feel freer and calmer.

I think you look fantastic! Every now and then I think about chopping mine all off because it’s so damaged from years of bleaching and dying it, but haven’t found the courage to do it yet! You and Mel Thompson have inspired me to do it sooner rather than later!

Hi Samantha I did the big chop. My scalp thanked me for not using chemicals any more. I was 40 and wished I'd done it sooner however I also didn't know what to do to style it. Learn as you go ,try different things to see what works for you EVERYBODY is different. I found naptral85 because my hair was similar. You will be fine in your journey to you. Its nice, fun getting to know the inner self. You will be educating your daughter also.

Yesssss this really resonates with me, people don’t understand the anxiety girls go through when they hate their natural hair. Simple things like working out or it raining out can literally trigger you into panic mode. You think that if people see you’re natural hair they almost see a secret of yours. It’s like keeping this secret that everyone knows about but you don’t want to admit about. Im so proud of you for doing this, it really is so freeing to love yourself the way you were born. It changes so much of your life

Sam what an amazing video. It takes a lot of guts to actually take charge and do what's best for yourself. All that negativity and emotion can break a person and you have identified that it's not helping you and you need a change. It's so inspirational to see someone take care of themselves, it takes time but starting with your hair is just fab. It must be so hard with the job you do to help yourself get through hard time with all the negitive side of social media, but the "I don't care" attitude is great. You are such an inspiration to your viewers, your daughter and to yourself. Made up for you. Xx

SAM! i relate so hard to this story. ive been redoing my braids over the last 2.5 years, but im thinking about taking them out because im not sure if im keeping them for the right reasons yaknow? i feel like despite them being braids, it’s the length that make people reach out to tell me they like them. i originally did them as a protective style, but now im in my head about whether im keeping them because of the cultural ties i feel to doing them, or subconsciously because other people “like the look.” your hair has always been beautiful, and to follow you over the years and to be able to see how many styles you can pull off has been so amazing to see! and i know you just chopped but girl i can already see the waves comin in😍! congratulations, sam🖤

I love everything about this, and about you! Everything seems just so right about this video: the way you look, the things you say, your glow! I am a white ginger girl, never had a problem with my hair, but have had other problems with the way I look. Your video and story inspire me to look the things that scare you or make you unhappy in the eyes and just take action. We are not our insecurities, we are not our fears, we are queens!
The song that kept playing in my head: India Arie, I am not my hair.
Thank you Sammi. I have been following you for years and love seeing your journey. You are a true inspiration on so many levels!
Lots of love from The Netherlands!

I LOVE your hair! You look beautiful!
When I decided to go natural and cut all my hair off, I felt the exact same way you did. It was like starting over. I held my identity in my hair. I had been getting relaxer since I was a young child. So to go and cut it all off and get to know the hair I was born with was a big step. And a big process. As soon as it was done I remember telling the stylist, "I feel so much lighter." I started to change after my big chop in 2012. Then my hair was damaged from a bad dye job and I had to big chop again in January 2018. I was not happy at first. But I really love my hair even more then I did the first time. I feel even more me than I did before. I love it. 😊

I did this exact same thing back in 2016! I'm also biracial, and my mom relaxed and straightened my hair consistently throughout my childhood, so when I was halfway through college I wanted to cut all the relaxer out of my hair and embrace my natural curls! My hair isn't nearly as curly as yours, but I had no idea how to take care of it because I didn't have to! So cutting it off was a great exercise in learning to love my natural hair and figure out what works best for it. I'm so happy you feel great about your decision, it was definitely a big moment for me in my journey of self-acceptance!!! You look beautiful!
