@@johnwarren7996 - They do. My friend was in the Air Force, and worked at NASA Ames Research Center on Advanced Avionics, Aerodynamics/ Wind Tunnel Testing, and Flight Data Testing/ Human Performance Factors and related Pilot Training fields. He was actually stationed at Moffet Field in the Reserves after active duty which is right next to Ames (same base basically).
Another older neighbor (deceased for many years now and an Army WWII Veteran) was the Second in Command at Ames and led Space Missions such as Voyager, and Pioneer interplanetary Missions while at Ames. I remember when I was a kid he took us up in his private plane over the Bay Area and Santa Cruz Mountains, Pacific Coast. He led the Pioneer Mission that became the first aircraft to escape our Solar System.
He would take the neighborhood kids up to Lick Observatory also, - the first permanently occupied mountain top observatory in the world. Of course this was in the 1970s/ early 1980s and I'm getting up in years now. But both were fascinated with space and used to talk about the future when humans would be endeavoring into intergalactic travel. Anyway, all military branches are represented by employees of NASA.

I always wanted to become a fighter pilot for either Air Force or Navy because I had such a fascination in the fighter aircraft we had. Once I learned you had to go officer in order to become a pilot that dream died. But I'm here now just about 3 years in and having a pretty good time. wish I could get orders onto a carrier someday.

Retired here. To add to J Arias' great advice; smile more and talk less (which displays wisdom), and always look like you know exactly what you're doing and what will come next, no matter what you actually think or feel. Confidence will mask your fear and uncertainty.. and those are inevitable human reactions to what you'll be doing... and everyone deals with it in their own way. The wonderful thing about appearing that you have no doubt, is that eventually you won't.

Definitely try DCS and join discords, watch videos. DCS has full fidelity, accurate systems based off of all of the declassified information we have access to, and much better flight models than MSFS. The 40 bucks I paid for the f18 has been worth it just due to the amount of content.

@@Uncle_Devs So I flew with keyboard for a while and bought a HOTAS for about 100. You can certainly play without a HOTAS but it's a little more difficult. The best way to have fun personally is to find a group of friends to play with you. Also I have dropped 40 bucks on this game, that's right I've bought 1 single aircraft and have poured a few hundred hours into the game already. The f/a-18 has so much content that you can easily fly it for a thousand hours and still not master everything
Generally the simpits you see people have with the full real life cockpit is literally only people with expendable budgets and unlimited free time 💀

    • @NinjaPedroX

You have to get a bachelors degree first so that you can commission as an officer in the armed forces. You can just go to college and pay for your own tuition and then go to OCS to commission, or you could go to the Naval Academy or get the NROTC Scholarship to get your tuition paid for and then commission after graduating. Even after you do that though, you aren't guaranteed a pilot slot. It's based on your scores (GPA, Aptitude, PT) and the needs of the Navy at the time.

Ask yourself, why would you like to join, don't be like me who picked a career based on fantasy but make sure you know your long term goal and your motivations behind it because it is a long journey regardless and it will at moments force you to ask yourself why your here but besides that, don't be afraid of it like this other guy, I encourage you to because overall there's a lot of benefit to personal growth. Everything is hard but in the navy at least your rewarded equally for your effort. Just know how your going to get there and if your actually considering joining, just find an armed forces office or recruiting station to go to and show up when their open but if your shy like me. Follow local recruiters on social media or call and they will respond promptly, nows a great time because they are eager for new recruits since recruiting is at an all time low so I encourage you to do so as soon as you can IF your truly educated and motivated and I wish you the best of luck too!

I had a son join during the last administration and it took him about 2weeks to get in. I have a son trying to join now under this administration and he's been trying for over a year. I'm retired, so I spoke with someone senior at a recruiting command who said that they're delaying people on purpose to take only those people that are serious about joining. Don't go in lukewarm. Don't get impatient or discouraged... stay on them.
If you want to know how valuable service in the Navy can be, I can tell you my experience. I grew up dirt poor and got mediocre grades in high school, and thought I was of maybe less than average intelligence. I got thrown into a job working on some of the most secret and complex equipment in the world after only 8 weeks training (and I was scared to death). Within 2yrs I got an award for being the best at my job on the entire western hemisphere of the world. I got out with a can-do attitude and worked my way into complex data sciences such as machine learning and AI. I make well over 6 figures and I don't have a degree (but I've had people with Masters Degrees working for me). I feel sorry for most of the civilians I work with who aren't veterans because they lack an edge that I now take for granted.
If you get in, stay away from the whiners and malcontents. That crap is contagious and it will ruin you. Just concentrate on how cool and unique your job is, and remember that one day when you're a civilian again, you'll wish you could go back... everyone does.

The coolest part is working on technology that no one else gets to touch. The coolest part is building experience to use in the real world while you shock your civilian counterparts with your knowledge and wisdom.
