  • Took off with a later than usual departure, about 9 and the heat was already starting to kick in. Had to stop off and get the cream for chaffing, stashed away in the trailer and set off for Vantage. The route we chose from either the Palouse to Cascade trail, which would send us directly to the bridge at Beverly Junction, or take the Vantage hwy and end up right at the office to check on room availability while in the gorge. Turns out there was one room available and definitely a huge relief. This part of the ride up to the top of Whiskey Dick peak up by the wind turbines had temps climbing into the mid 90's and sort of cooled at the top but as we descended down towards Vntage, the heat came back up again and the campground didn't offer much in the way of charging up the packs or decent shade. The mini mart had all the dinner essentials and gallons of water so we could restock the 1 liter bottles. Additional side note. Stopped off at the coffee shop/cafe in Kittitas and had no idea how popular the place was, stood in line for about 20 minutes to get a drink. Did kind of make for a pleasant short break before the remaining distance to the peak.
Overall just a hot day and received notice of a heat advisory mid afternoon. Should have made a choice of whether to turn around or continue on considering the heat wave would warm up the entire central Washington area as we travel from there up to Quincy and eventually Wenatchee for the following 2 nights to stay out of the highest temps during the week.
