I can feel for you and I'm so glad you and Jenn are ok. My dad was sleeping on his front porch when he was 7 when lightning struck the tree at his house. He was also fine, but I grew up unplugging everything in the house when a storm was coming. No showers during a storm. No phone during a storm. He took all precautions!!!!
I feel your fear! This JUST happened to me about a month ago in Upstate NY... I wasn't as close as you, about 40 yards. I was on my porch too! I was told to come inside (rolling thunder in distance) and I made a joke about just moving up from Florida and never being struck there in 37 years, I'm fine! Before I could finish that sentence, BAM! Needed a change of shorts. My bright light was pink, took out my Red Maple. It actually blew the roots just like yours, AND a turtle nest right out of the ground! Eggs everywhere! I'm glad you guys are ok! Lets all be thankful they make rockers out of wood and not metal! LOL

I've received an indirect hit from lightning. Back when there were landline phones galore without the lines being buried I was hurrying to get off the phone with my best friend and the strike came through the line. Got my ear and mouth..I was about 8 or 9 yrs old. Got lucky for sure. Sure glad you were not standing in the lawn area by the store! I'd go ahead and take those trees down. They're inner structure may be damaged (highly likely) and they'll start dying from the inside which in turn is just an accident waiting to happen. Often they'll look pretty good from the outside!
Agreed. Especially that tree that is already split. Those are already weaker than a single trunk tree and it’s not a matter of if it does but when it falls.

The doctors call him a walking miracle!!! Thank God the kids weren't playing in the yard!!! Thank God none of the animals were hit. Another friend of mine had her horse struck by lightning, he did not survive. You definitely had some Angels on your shoulders yesterday!!! The lights can be replaced but you guys cannot!!! As you know Zac, lighting can be hotter than the surface of the sun. Hopefully those trees will make it but in our experience with lighting everyone of them have died within a year or two. There is a man who works with the company I work for who, 2 weeks ago, moved to another branch a couple of hours away, to live closer to his extended family. During the day on the same day this happened to you, lightening struck his house and he lost everything. He had only been there 2 weeks... it is SO scary what happened on the same day to you and to him.
That happened to us 2 years ago. My husband had just been at the tree a few minutes before and came into the house. It was 12 feet away and blew pictures off the wall. A year later we had to take the tree down. Thankful you were not harmed.

I live about an hour away from you in ky. It was pretty bad here too. I'm seeing lightning come out of the ground and go up. The most dangerous lightning there is. We were hit about five years ago, and we watched the electricity go down our walls. Blew out our TV and light bulbs. So so scary. What scared me the most, I sleep with an electric blanket all year round due to illness. I was so thankful I did not have it on that night. Oh, wow... me and my kids were driving through NM and our car was hit by lightning. My oldest son was sitting in the front seat, and my other son and younger daughter were in the back. All of a sudden the sky let loose and it turned black and started pouring. I couldn't see the road anymore so I pulled off and the kids were looking out the windows to see that I wasn't going to hit anyone. We made it to the side and the wipers were still going. All of a sudden, POW!!!... the wiper in front of my son was hit by lightning. It was a flash like one of those '70s flash bulbs. Scare the begesus out of all of us. We waited out the rain and limped our way to Albuquerque. I pulled off to call my dad. I was in absolute horror when I got out. The entire car was covered in pock marks connected by spider web marks. The lightning had burned a hole in the windshield and blew all the clips open that hold the wipers.The car was running badly so we pulled into a dealership. They too were shocked. They said we were extremely lucky our gas tank sealed so well or we probably would of blown up. There were pock marks next to the gas tank plug. To this day my daughter is terrified of lightning. 🌩
This happened to me several years ago..I witnessed the lightning hit a tree and I was sitting about 50 feet away…I felt the most bizarre tingling throughout my body and my ears rang for hours. The tree immediately caught fire and the bark from the tree was blown literally more than 200 yards all over our property. You are lucky to be alive! It’s absolutely fascinating and frightening at the power and energy in a bolt of lightning. Blessings guys so glad your ok! Needless to say I no longer sit outside on the porch during a storm🙏💖

Zach, sounds like the lightening may have damaged the voltage to the store and not twinkle lights. They may not be getting enough voltage to burn properly. Run drop cord and plug them from house to see if they truly are damaged or check power at store with voltage meter. You may have damage to store wiring. Good luck and God bless. That was so bizarre! The forces of nature are awesome. Glad you two are ok and can joke about it now. When I was about 7 I was washing dishes after a family meal. I don’t remember seeing lightning but know both my hands were in the sink and when I felt the jolt I immediately jerked my hands out of the soapy water and screamed. I never wash dishes during a thunderstorm.

My Uncle Stan has been struck by lightning twice and lived to tell about it, so has my MIL ( she is now deceased, not from that) I don't shower or do dishes during storms. Always very careful.

Before I even knew what happened, there was such a charge of electricity in the air that all our hair on our body stood straight up before the lightening struck. Boy when it struck we ran in the house! Such a scary and strange happening.
It's amazing you all weren't hurt more than ears, headache and numbness.....I couldn't see it so well on the video on my phone but this video on you tube is clear as day. Very scary for sure. Lightening is something to be feared sure. I will view a rain shower differently now....you had no warning what so ever that is the scariest part.

Thank goodness you're safe! Watch the trees carefully- they can look "ok" but the internal tissue damage can be severe, and water and nutrients just can't move through any longer. It is scary- we've had our house struck twice in the 38 years we've lived here. House is grounded , but a 212-year-old house on a hill surrounded by huge, old growth trees is an absolute lightning rod! Be sure to itemize everything that was damaged in the store to see if an insurance claim would be worth it (after any deductible.) We lost freezers full of food when ours were fried and insurance was worth it!
