I loved him as a kid. I don't know why because I usually love characters with the opposite characterization (the kind and friendly ones). I think his mannerism and way of talking really entertained me.
Because Prince John was only the incumbent ruler of England. Richard the Lionheart was the actual ruler, but he'd taken off on the Crusades. His brother John ruled in his stead. The thing is, John was actually a great diplomat, but a poor military strategist. As to why his taxes were so damned high - the Crusades wouldn't pay themselves, after all.
"I tried to tell you, but no, no, no, you wouldn't listen. Your traps just never work! And now look what you've done to your mother's castle!" "AAAAAAHHHHHH! MOMMY! *begins sucking his thumb but then gets angry* Ohhhhh! *begins trying to hit Sir Hiss with his stick* Hold still!" "Sire, no!" "You cowardly cobra!" "Please, oh no!" "Procrastinating python! Aggravating asp!" "Save me, ooh!" "You eel in snake's clothing!" "Help! He's gone stark raving mad!" XD
A Cowardly, Snivelling, Whiny Spoilt brat. SOOOO WELL played by Peter Ustinov. This is in the days that Disney animators really got the characters expressions to match up to their real life counterparts perfectly!
Okay, interpretations. He's immature, narcissistic, and childish. He's lived his entire life with privilege, but he's never had to deal with responsibility, or boundaries. As a child he was constantly in his brother's shadow, and possibly developed a sense of shame or self-loathing watching his brother assume the responsibilities of kingship while he was left in idle, irrelevant luxury. With his brother out of the way, John is on a power trip, pure and simple. His ability to overtax the kingdom is a childish temper tantrum, a way of getting back at his brother by taking all his toys when he isn't looking. Sir Hiss is the one with the cunning to make this plot work, but John also resents him because he hates being reliant on someone else, and he'd rather think the plot was his own idea, which it wasn't. He bullies Hiss because he constantly is trying to prove that he really is the one in charge.
You know this explains a lot about the real King John namely A. Why he lost his mother's Empire in France. B. Why his mother's crown jewels ended up at the bottom of a river. C. Why his mother's kingdom came close to civil war. and D. Why he lost most of his mother's political power with Magna Carta
+William Craig If you want a great portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitaine watch "The Lion in Winter" with Peter O'Toole as Henry II (Richard and John's father) and Katheryn Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine. Hepburn was definitely born to play this role. Eleanore is a great mix of Hepburn's natural charm, charisma and sass. It is set late in Henry's reign during a Christmas court. Henry's son and heir died and now he has to choose a new one, but he and Eleanor can't decide between Richard (the eldest and Eleanor's favorite) or John ( who Henry prefers). Eleanore and Henry are not in the best point in their marriage since Henry has previously had her locked up for helping their three sons rebel against him, but has now let her out just for Christmas. Basically everyone in that family are plotting against one another in order to come out on top. The script, especially the one liners, are great and all the acting is superb all around. I can't recommend it enough.
Because it pissed of Henry, who she was pissed at because he had mistresses, one who she probably ordered poisoned though the evidence is circumstantial, and for locking her up! Richard was a horrible king ,but at least he was better than John.
+Meatballs for life Totally true When Prince John was playing with the tax money stolen from the poor it made me think of viper cameron and his band of poisonous snakes that are more poison then heart I highly doubt they got any fibre of heart or any descent bone in their souls not bloody likely lol.
A couple of people have left comments asking why Prince John doesn't have a mane. I'd think it was because he's a mountain lion but his brother Richard appears at the end of the movie & he does have one.
It's kind of ironic that Prince John is a lion pretending to be king. He reminds of another character in medieval fantasy. A golden head prick who's more Lion than Stag and pretending to be king.
Some people just call him Robin Hood, but then they say that he steals from the workers (Which Robin Hood didn't) and gives it to the immigrants (Which in an ideal world isn't really something that exists since every human is still human, same laws apply) Actually, when it's looked up properly, Obama doesn't either (WHAAT?!) He had tax cuts for low income and no cuts for high incomes. And now he wants to increase it for high income. And that's just part of it. I could write loots more bout it ^^
Yeah, well, in some countries. I've seen the tendency in capitalistic conservative countries. Other coutries has like what some people say "Robin Hood taxes" (with some negative hints to it, for some reason I don't get, specially after watching this...). What I've seen, these are like socialistic countries (No, not communistic, it's not the same...) where you get treated equally at hospitals and schools, whether you or your parents have money or not... :o ISN'T IT JUST CRAZY?! ^^
I don't think a disney movie is relevant enough to make a opion on John I, sure he wasn't the greatest king but still. Richard the lionheart did return but at a pretty high cost and died leaving John the crown.
Kathryn Hill Yes, I guess his thumb sucking is when he's jealous that his mother loved King Richard the most or when he does something bad that his mother doesn't like. I agree when you said "eeww" that it's gross to suck your thumb especially since the second time he sucked his thumb, he made his thumb dirty which was the scene when Robin Hood and Little John disguised as fortune tellers stole his gold.
One thing is for sure. Prince John is quite the poet! He uses lots of alliteration when addressing Hiss :)
sir hiss and john are the campiest disney villains ever... they are hilarious

and let's not forget the lords and the barons causing so much trouble.
"Rob the poor to feed the rich."
Boy ain't that the case nowadays.
"Yess, my rreluctant rreptile!!"
*LOL*
I never knew that Sir Peter Ustinov was a voice actor, too.
"I tried to tell you, but no, no, no, you wouldn't listen. Your traps just never work! And now look what you've done to your mother's castle!"
"AAAAAAHHHHHH! MOMMY! *begins sucking his thumb but then gets angry* Ohhhhh! *begins trying to hit Sir Hiss with his stick* Hold still!"

My favorite line from Sir Hiss is this one.
"What cheek! 'Creepy'? 'Buster'? 'Long one'? Who does that dopey duke think he is?!"
He may be a brat, but he can be pretty scary when his temper explodes, can't he?
A mere slip of the forked tongue your majesty...
Love you, Hiss!
Sir Hiss is SO done with John.
"Ahem I've Been Robbed Of Course You've Been Robbed"
"I tried to tell you but no no no you wouldn't listen your traps doesn't ever work, and now look what you've done to your mother's castle. "

7:52 I would pause the tape when he freaks out.
1:08 That would one AWESOME parade for the Disney theme parks, especially since this year's the film's 40th anniversary!
'now look here, one more hiss out of you..errhheerrre..hiss..' HAHA

Well spoken
Well spoken!
A perfect analysis
you described prince john down to a t
Couldn't have said it better...you sound like a psych
The part where John was trying to kill Hiss with the 2x4 was freakin hilarious
You forgot to say "and he's a mama's boy."
You know this explains a lot about the real King John namely A. Why he lost his mother's Empire in France. B. Why his mother's crown jewels ended up at the bottom of a river. C. How amazed I was, to learn the truth behind John and his brother Richard
That crown scene will always make me laugh.
3:07 muthuh always did like richard best XD
Idk how Richard lived with a bro like THAT... i didn’t know a brother could be worse than my bro
Brings back memories
Best movie ever...
Prince John's greed over taxes can be quite a sin.
Oh, so THAT'S why King Richard went on a crusade, is it....
Probably Lady Twilight and also the fact that Prince John was such a Baby
Brandon Hawkins when he sucks his thumb
Well, we used this in school today.
Next thing I know we'll be watching spongebob for revision.
Somehow I can't imagine anyone calling Eleanor of Aquitaine "Mommy."
+William Craig

I think John as a teenager was something like the Disney Prince John.
worst, and he had daddy to back him up!
Plus, she really DID like Richard best.
Because it pissed of Henry, who she was pissed at because he had mistresses, one who she probably ordered poisoned though the evidence is circumstantial, and for locking her up! Richard was a horrible king ,but at least he was better than John.
love the Parade part
I'm only watching this for my history homework....
David Cameron springs to mind
+Meatballs for life Totally true
When Prince John was playing with the tax money stolen from the poor
it made me think of viper cameron and his band of poisonous snakes that are more poison then heart I highly doubt they got any fibre of heart or any descent bone in their souls not bloody likely lol.
This is my History Homework... xD Good old secondary school.
having to watch this for history...
@Foxburg In fact, it's the 13th Century (John reigned from 1199 to 1216) ;-)
you have no idea how manyn times i have watched this hahahahaha
QUOTE IT ALL THE TIME
LOVE YOUR BIGGEST FAN
He's nothing but a cowardly, greedy, power-hungry, sinister; not to mention vengeful against Robin.
I'm not sure I understand the point, but anyway John has the most fabulous laugh
Prince John owns. he is a beast. no pun intended =)
It occurs to me that Prince John and Sir Hiss anticipate Mr Burns and Smithers
Oh look,It's John Boehner!
used this for teaching Social Studies about King John and the purpose of the Magna Carta. :]
WOW, his voice sound exactly like the german one :D exactly i say
A couple of people have left comments asking why Prince John doesn't have a mane. I'd think it was because he's a mountain lion but his brother Richard appears at the end of the movie & he does have one.
Stephen Treadwell I think it was to emphasise his immaturity.
Stop playing with your snake and do something social, John.
lol hes obsessed with robin hood
2:29
Yeah, I guess George Lucas liked robin hood.
The crown was too big for his head
VixPsykohazard Either that or he just needed to spread out his ears for his ears to hold the crown on.
04:02 - Sir Hissssss is pissssssed off xD !
Prince John reminds me of David Cameron
"Rob the poor to feed the rich!"
God, please don't base your homework on a Disney film. While the general tone of John is quite right, it's not entirely correct about him.
So Freaking true
Very interesting
3:14 Smothers Brothers moment? :) Hiss and John make me laugh since my childhood.
It's kind of ironic that Prince John is a lion pretending to be king. He reminds of another character in medieval fantasy. A golden head prick who's more Lion than Stag and pretending to be king.
You mean jeofrey erik

power power sir hiss
taxes ar har ar har english goverment in a nutshell XD
Thank you
What type of man he is? lol he's a hilarious comic foil without which the film would be boring.
that's Disney!
when the characters have complicated feelings rather than things that are black/white, they're villains.
I don't think a disney movie is relevant enough to make a opion on John I, sure he wasn't the greatest king but still. Richard the lionheart did return but at a pretty high cost and died leaving John the crown.

I didn't like Prince John at all when I was little. Especially, when he whines and cries for his mother and sucks his thumb like a big crybaby. Eeww!!
well it still funny
