One of these Jewish refugee is a Physics professor called Mr. Binks who later taught at the Far Eastern University in Manila. He was my late father’s physics professor during the 60’s when my dad was studying Engineering. My dad said he’s a fellow professor with Einstein when was in Germany. He was nice man, become friends with my dad and would sometimes visit with his wife at our house and have dinner in the 70’s.

Wow, this is a fact that many people don't know about. In addition to what President Quezon did to rescue so many Jews, there is another little known fact that it was the Philippines that cast the tie-breaking vote in the United Nations to allow the establishment of the State of Israel. In honor of these contributions by the Philippines to help the Jewish people, Philippine citizens were granted visa-free travel to Israel and vice-versa. God bless these two countries!

I am a filipino. In the mid seventies, I had became a friend of a Jewish man . He narrated that when he was about 2 yrs old in the early 1930, the Nazis in Germany were planning to persecute the Jews and annihilating them. Being aware of these Nazi plans his parents decided to seek asylum elsewhere , and fate brought them here to the Philippines where they resided here in a Visayan island. By 1938,during which Nazi already killed thousand of Jews, his family already established a quiet life here in the Philippines.Nearing the end of WWII he was working for the US army as a warehouse man in an army base camp where he had the opportunity to study Electronics from the american GIs and by correspondence. He became adept in this skill that i was one of the few lucky people who he taught my present skills. I cried when he died in 1989. He was a great Teacher and a Friend.

One of the few things I love about this movie is how they managed to portray the Americans' hero-complex and prejudice. After the 2nd world war, Americans bought our country from Spain (check for The Treaty of Paris). Both sides conducted the Mock Battle of Manila, Spain left, then America propagated the idea that they 'saved' us. They remained in the Philippines at the pretense of 'guiding' us until we can walk independently.
They campaigned for Benevolent Assimilation policy. I quote from McKinley: "The Philippines is ours not to exploit but to develop, to civilize, to educate, and to train in the science of self-government."
A lot of high-ranking Americans thought we were uncivilised and greatly incapable of governing, thinking, and standing up for ourselves. In some accounts, McKinley even thought we're a country of idiots. This movie managed to show how little Americans thought of Filipinos and how are ancestors rebelled against this. It also shows how all this hate and prejudice can be mended.
Edited for the correction below: I mixed the order of events and thanks to the person below for noticing.
    - - Due to the Treaty of Paris, the Spanish-American war ended - America compensated Spain so they could occupy the Philippines. The Mock Battle of Manila was the fruit of the treaty to put on a show. There is already American occupation when WWII erupted and their "Benevolent Assimilation" in the Philippines has long been placed.

It was literally called the "Battle of Manila" because Spanish forces and American forces aided by Philippine Revolutionary Army led by Aguinaldo engaged battle IN MANILA. Spain and America is legally in war at the time, the battle was orchestrated so Spain could transfer power to America, hence the American troops were able to took control of Intramuros. Negotiation between America and Spain has already started before the battle and before the year ends (1898), this negotiation has come to be The Treaty of Paris. Philippines, by all means, were already handed to the Americans after that "peace" talk. If that's not understandable enough, due to The Treaty of Paris, America acquired my country for 20 million usd from Spain.

Unfortunately not many are interested In knowing why it was not English or Spanish that Quezon declared as the national language and even why there was a need to declare a national language.
Quezon was being practical in not declaring English or Spanish as the national language because Spanish and English were never and still was not the general language in 1937, when Quezon declared a national language
" Today there is not one language that is spoken and understood by all the Filipinos, nor even by a majority of them, It is unnecessary for me to demonstrate how essential it is for our people to have one language that can be used by all in their daily intercourse. Such language cannot be either English or Spanish, except perhaps, if ever, only after many generations and at a very great cost. We cannot wait that long.” -- Manuel L Quezon
      www.officialgazette.gov.ph/1937/12/30/speech-of-president-quezon-on-filipino-national-language-december-30-1937/
Quezon mentioned in his speech that the status of Spanish in the Philippines was still the same (1937) as it was during Rizal’s time. Quezon quoted Rizal:
Spanish will never be the language generally spoken in the country; the people will never speak it. Each people has its own way of thinking. You are trying hard to divest yourselves of your own personality as a people; you forget that as long as a people preserves its language, it retains a token of its liberty, just as a man retains his freedom so long as he preserves his own independence of thought. A language expresses the ideas and ideals of a people.”-El Filibusterismo, Jose Rizal

Oh my lord THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, Manila was comparable to New york or London, just with a bit more diversity. It was like a mini europe on asia, like how hong kong is, but add in german, Italian and american influences, there were tram stations, british tea shops, and drinkable tap water. Imagine this, in a single street you could have a pilipino walk down a street and see british tea houses and a japanese garden right next to it.
Shame it's was all burned down...

I'm a Filipino from the Philippines, the first time I heard about Quezon helping Jews was when I helped an elderly couple while waiting for a flight on my way to Lake Tahoe. We talked for a while and the old man told me how America was a blessing for their family, but never getting into specifics. While we boarded the same flight, the old man greeted me as he headed to first class. The man beside me was shocked and asked how I knew the man. He said their family practically owned half of Hollywood and the casino city we were headed to. To this day, I keep wondering who that elderly couple was and how ironic I only first heard about Quezon's efforts from him instead of school in the Philippines.

    Just some trivia for Non-Filipinos.
    Roxas is pronounced Rohas.
Vehicles/carts/tartanillas drove on the left side of the road.
It was only after the war that we started driving on the right side, with all the military vehicles left by the US.
And importing cars from the US would then be cheaper.
It was officially mandated in the Philippines in 1945 and internationally in 1958.
