- This is one of the best scenes in the movie... some great fun these poor people were having before many of them were killed by brutal men-hunters.
Epic western by Michael Cimino and a masterpiece of American cinema, based on the infamous Johnson County War of 1892.
The scene already is on TH-cam, but it just needed a reupload with the remastered DVD edition. Much brighter colors now :-) Really more fun to watch the entire movie.
Having been in this scene, I can't forget that it was 120 degrees in there and I was working 16 hour days as a 12 year old. That said, it was so much fun and thankfully I have many pictures I took during that time.

@@apocalypsepow It's the narrative which is lacking. If it had gotten straight to the point of the Johnson County War and how it affected the locals it could have been fantastic. Instead that whole conflict becomes a backdrop to Kris Kristofferson's love for a hooker, old rivalries which are never explained, people with a distant connection to him who just emerge out of the blue and scenes such as these which become a sideshow and distraction deviating from the main story.
Disjointed storytelling. Too many tangents. Puzzling character motivations.
That ruins the whole film. Real pity. Could have been great.

It's a gorgeous scene and perhaps one the most eloquent and moving expressions of communal joy ever put on film.
It's good to hear that despite its notoriety, this film is slowly crawling back to some esteem. Sure the legends would have us believe that half the budget went up Cimino's (and others') nose and the other half went to that transplanted tree and the waiting, waiting, waiting...but, at least in isolation, this scene - a beautiful longueur - is striking. A belle époque roller disco scene at the apex of that late 70s fad - genius - and shot and cut exquisitely - Though an Oscar Winner, and highly respected, Vilmos Zsigmond has fallen from the lips of most who extoll beautiful photography today - but here it all is - who could have the balls today to shoot in such muted, low contrast tones and yet maintain such dimension...a masterwork to stand beside 'Bound For Glory' and 'Days of Heaven'.

I need to see Bound for Glory again. I do recall how stunning it was on first viewing it years ago. It is not often mentioned as one of the great films of the seventies, but it is one of the greats.

The first hour is great if you can't get to sleep. Pop this movie in, and you will be off to sleep in no time.
The movie was too long for the painfully slow and thin plot. Honestly the cinematography and soundtrack are its most redeeming qualities.
I just watched this movie for the first time. I just can't express how much I loved it. The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic! I can't say enough and I hope that it has a very successful resurgence and popularity that it deserves. Bravo!! 💕

@@johndeagle4389 sure thing Deagle...a turning point for filmmaking in Hollywood and genuine film criticism and analysis. Where American critics decided to bury a movie as a collective and go along with the "general consensus" and review of every other critic and for the most part, become a gang of sheep who found it much easier to go along with popular tastes and opinion instead of having to absorb, analyze and provide a valid opinion on an ambitious and worthwhile epic because their attention spans and fat asses couldn't deal with the movie being "too long". It seems most Yankees can only ponder, enjoy and think critically for only short periods at a time. It was all about "them", and they projected it onto the movie. I saw S&E laughing and complaining about how superfluous this scene which has plenty of detail and feel evoking the characters and the era it takes place in, yet they were praising the wedding sequence in "Deer Hunter" for being so enveloping and involving, even though it has the same effect and Cimino's construction is similar as well.
This is pure cinematic gold
I like how this thing was wildly expensive, yet did it contribute to the movie as much as the director probably thought it would.

I remember going up to Michigan for family reunions when I was younger and everyone dancing like this, except without the roller skates. This moves me.

It is in the same class with "Once upon the time in the west". Unfortunately the movie shows the USA as it was in the 19 th century (I would mention the murder of 99% of the Indians in order to get their belongings to the correct people, you could call this the only accomplished genozid in history and I write this as a german!) and for this reason it busted and ruined UA in the process. The movie is simply wonderful, remember the dance scene in Harvard, these students waltzing on an idiots version of the Kaiserwalzer von Franz Josef Strauß and compare to this really wonderfull people dancing to their native music. It comes to this: the native dancing people will be murdered by the civilized waltzing people.
@@michaelverner6609 I agree, this is a great movie and I'm convinced it failed because of its political message. It showed something of the dark side of US history that many people didn't want to be faced with. It had been talked to death even before it was in the cinemas, so the majority just didn't go to watch it. Though only in the US, it got many good reviews in Europe.
But you are wrong about the people in this scene. These are not natives, but European- mostly eastern European- immigrants. The movie shows the mostly depressing reality of their lives.

This dancing scene is great, especially the music, but could have been half as long and conveyed everything it needed to. But this was before the days in which you could put cool extra footage in “Disc 2” or elsewhere, so I presume didn’t want to lose it by not including.

Heavens Gate is certainly a wonderful movie and yes , some scene's are masterpieces. I have watched this movie a number of times recently trying to understand what I find disturbing. The photography is brilliant , the story has a historical context. The beginning of the film is very so so and there is a disconnect between the very long and tedious graduation scene and the balance of the film. All of a sudden the film advises you it is 20 years later. kris kristofferson is the weak link in the movie. Just terrible. He looks awkward and uncomfortable most of the time. All the other actors and actresses are splendid. This movie is somewhat of an enigma . The bulk of this film is truly incredibly , some parts are just ok and some not so good. It is unusual for a film to be so fragmented . How do you rate this. Impossible. Conclusion . I am more than willing to wade through the not so good to enjoy the really great parts.

I saw this in the theatres before it was pulled. The movie was a mess (I had no idea what it was about, it was so confusing) but this scene was thrilling.
I just watched it last night. I can see why it didn’t do well in theaters but I really liked it, it felt so authentic. Walken and young Jeff Bridges were standout performances to me.

In the very first cut that was publicly shown, this scene is 10 minutes long. And why? Did it move the story forward? Did we understand the personalities better? Did it make for a better story telling? Nope! Its all because of the director's vanity. Sure, let us give him that. The entire movie is well-shot, well-lit, and decently acted. But its also pointlessly excessive, so much, that it actually ruins the entire story telling. It was as if Cimino was more concerned with "Oh lookie here, look at these nice clouds I shot iform the sky".
The critics were half-right about Cimino. He let success get into his head, and acted like a spoiled brat. Remember that because of him, movies now that use animals must make a disclaimer that they didnt hurt any during filming. More than that, Cimino robbed other directors of their chance ot make a movie with UA

You can cherry pick scenes out of this movie - like this one that are gorgeous and engaging. But taken as a whole, it's just a bit too tedious. Incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail though. If you read the book "Final Cut" (the documentary of which is on TH-cam as well) about the making of this film, they describe seeing the dailies and early cut scenes as if '...David Lean had decided to make a western.'

It goes to show that while having beautiful locations, pretty cinematography and costumes is nice, you really need a good focused script and engaging characters to really connect with an audience.
Heaven's Gate is pretty to look at and features that epic scale of old Hollywood ( see its many scenic locations, hundreds of extras and elaborate costumes) that we don't see as much of anymore in these CGI days, but it's a shame Cimino couldn't write a story & characters that were as engaging as the production aspects.
Can someone explain to me where all those hundreds of roller skaters went at the end of the scene just before those two other characters started dancing together? They seem to just dissappear into nothing. Unless I missed something I didn't see any exit on the side of the room where they all convened at the end.
Yes, we were told to exit the arena through the front as fasr as possible while the phocuses on Jeff Bridges puking out the back door.

Roller skating has been around since 1743. They were skating during the time of the Johnson County cattle wars. Especially with the Eastern European immigrants.
They were invented in 1735.

This movie lost all but $3.5M of its $44M budget; due to other costs and expectations of profit, it had had to earn at least $140M to satisfy the investors. It basically destroyed the careers of director Cimino, star Kristofferson, and United Artists' status as an independent studio (weakened financially by the film's failure, it was bought out by MGM). It also effectively ended the free-wheeling New Hollywood phase of the movie industry, where promising young "name" directors were given carte blanche to spend and schedule as they willed.
Pure cinema.

David Mansfield is the composer of the music to the movie. He wrote it for the movie. And he played in it, he is the young fiddle player in this scene! The soundtrack album is available on cd. Have just checked it, it seems to be rare right now. But if I remember well, it is on TH-cam somewhere...

Its supposed invoke emotion into the viewer, and the feeling of being there during this time, which I think it does well as long with other drawn out "pointless scenes" in the movie. I read that nearly everything in this movie was oriented towards making the director money. They shot on his land, played music he owned the copyright to, etc - all of which led to the studio paying him huge amounts more when they could just as easily have used other land/music/etc. and saved money.
It seems to me that the real meaning of heaven's gate is to be a giant embezzlement operation for the director.
None of the movie was shot on Cimino's land. He shot over a million feet of film, the dailies were flown in by private jet every morning. Those things add up over the course of a summer. It was shot in Glacier Park, city land in Kalispell, as well as Wallace Idaho, and Harvard. The whore-house was purchased by Jeff Bridges after the completion of the film. He still owns and uses it on his land in Montana.

(He shot a scene of Kris Kristoffson’s character whipping someone 56 times) This eventually gave the movie bad press and that was probably the cause of the colossal financial flop, that and Cimino taking the film off theaters and editing it for a long period of time before re-releasing it
La Serpenta Canta The only problem with this film is it’s failure to market itself as an arthouse film. And the audiences lack of understanding of history. It’s an arthouse film. Not mainstream entertainment. The only reason his previous film The Deer Hunter was popular with mainstream audience was because of the topic at hand, Vietnam. He always was an arthouse director. With a unique and amazing perspective of history and story telling. And endless detail, as is a great painting.

great scene for a film but the polyurethane skate wheels from 1980 are not from the era enacted , if people did skate like this a more than century ago they would have been on metal skate wheels, and that floor would have been a lot more noisy.

The fiddle is also an anachronism, using all the modern ergonomic innovations. Back then they didn't have fine-tuners (the metal screw visible on the tailpiece), or chin rests, or shoulder rests, and wouldn't have had metal strings-- would have been sheep gut. It's like watching someone drive a Yamaha motorcycle onto the set.

Rateye Smertz roper slating was actually very popular in the late 19th century and especially in the west as a form of recreation. Roller skates were mass produced and very cheep at the time and roller rinks like the one in the film would rent them out to patrons as they came to the rink. It’s strange to think, but this scene isn’t far fetched at all. Cimino did a lot of research for this film and oddly enough some of the scenes that critics found ridiculous such as this as well as the Roman type siege cannons at the end and Nate’s letter as he is killed were inspired by actual documented history!

This is one of those movies you watch with the fast forward button handy.
This is a good scene for aspiring film makers to watch as far a what NOT to do. Everything in a movie should either reveal something about the characters or move the plot forward. I believe the director of this movie is dead, but if still alive I would ask him what his goal for this scene was. What does five minutes of watching roller skating do for the audience? What would we lose if this scene was cut? I actually sat across a table from two people who said that they were in the select group of people alive smart enough to realize that “Heaven’s Gate” was a truly great movie. They were idiots. Also, kids...stay away from cocaine.
Sounds like the most limited idea of cinema I've ever heard. Also, festive rituals have been a fundamental part in townsfolk lives since the Middle Ages. You can't make a movie all about the dowtrodden, the underclass and not show their culture, how they live, where they sleep, what do they eat and why are they worthy of living in peace and with happiness, like they do in this moment

You want to take all the slow bits out of, say, "Lawrence of Arabia?"

We get Michael’s story about the singer (“That’s my family, Kate, not me.”) and the developing plan for the two 20-year olds getting beaten to the point of being crippled. Make things happen.

This is similar to the wedding sequence in The Deer Hunter. Cimino is trying to show the importance of community and family. He could have cut 3 minutes out of this scene. Almost every scene in the film is too long. Pretentious!
I completely disagree. It takes nerve to take the time to let a story unfold. David lean regretted shortening the waterhole scene in Lawrence of Arabia, fearful of losing the audience. People want instant gratification now and don't have the attention span for long scenes. Shame on them

Ah, now I understand why the movie was one of the biggest flops in all of movie history. For one thing, altogether too long.
I’ve read through a number of comments defending this film from various perspectives... which are all nonsense, Heaven’s Gate is one of the worst things put on celluloid ever. It is so ungodly horrible to watch in its full version you start thinking that Jaws 4 wasn’t really that bad a movie. Should you watch “Heaven’s Gate?” Oh my God, YES, I own a copy because I was fascinated about the bankrupting of United Artists, mainly due to the $90 million they spent on this turd.
Cimono, his UA budget manager girlfriend and most of the crew were so high on coke it was described as “winter in Montana.” Which is unfortunate because many of the shots are visually stunning, the backgrounds are breathtaking, and... why is the railroad ticket-master sleeping under a fallen tree? Is this his home? How does he keep his uniform so tidy? Why does he keep saying “citizen” when referring to his fellow Americans? Is this code for “proletariat?” Americans never rode on the outside of rail cars, what’s with all the Russian crap anyway? Expound my first few questions across the next 4 hours, you begin to see some problems with the narrative.
The attention to detail is amazing (per Cimino: “Even if you don’t see it, you’ll know it's there”) the overcrowding of any crowd scene, the lack of any humor or pacing... even his girlfriend (in charge of the budget, she kept on top of the situation) lamented nobody came in to control his out-of-control spending... which was sort of in her job description, but oh well. Should you watch “Heaven’s Gate?” If you’re a film buff, yes, absolutely! Will you like it? No, not at all. It’s a pretentious, self-important piece of crap that managed to slap on two overbudget “bookends” (at the beginning and end) which add nothing to the story. But hey, if United Artists is paying for it... why not? After it’s release anybody that had anything to do with it got fired, UA became part of MGM... but Cimono did get to direct “Year of the Dragon,” so that happened. Again, amazing visuals

I really have to question EVERYTHING after watching this nonsense. Was _Deer Hunter_ even any good? I really can't be sure anymore. After watching such a profoundly stupid waste of film like _Heaven's Gate,_ you begin to doubt that Cimino made ANYTHING good. What an insane, ridiculous man.
When the bad reviews on this movie have completely washed your brain, it makes people unable to think for themselves.
Go watch Titanic, you will find your happiness.
It’s a good story but the film is a bloated mess. It should have been a simple story, but Cimino’s ego got in the way.

Personally, I found The Deer Hunter rather overblown and absurd. Also, the wedding scene was interminable.
