Why the new Ibanez EHB basses suck (and how to fix it)

  • Ibanez released the EHB series of bass guitars at NAMM in January, and I took delivery of my EHB1505MS-PLF last Friday. In this video I share my first impressions, and also two unexpected flaws - that luckily were easy to fix.
    The screws I used to fix the string saddles in the bridge were M3 x 12mm metric set screws (also called grub screws) for 1.5 mm allen key and with rounded ends. Longer screws should work too, they'll just stick out more (the original screws in my bass were 10 mm...). You need 10 of them, 2 for each saddle.

    I got some 12mm long M3 screws off ebay and they really improved the low B and High G. I swapped out the all the 10mm tall screws and now the EHB sounds way better. Thanks for confirming my own suspicions.

    Some of the members on the talkbass website mentioned not liking the placement of the strap peg. I got an EHB1005 and experienced the same issue. I appreciate your video to get a visual on where you placed yours, and put mine in the exact same spot, fairly close to the output jack. Huge improvement, as I had the same outcome as you, and the bass now hangs straight up and down.

    The interesting thing is that Ibanez designed the body so the body/fingerboard will tilt towards you a bit, making it easier to see your fingering. But not everyone will want that, like in your case.

    I appreciate the video, but I'd hardly say that these instruments "suck" based on one's personal preferences (title looks like click bait IMO). The QC stuff on the other hand, I can't fault you for that. I have the 1005MS and will be getting a 1505 in a week or two. I was very fortunate with my 1005MS not having any issues, but I have seen posts of people having some QC issues with their EHB models. However, QC inconsistency isn't really the fault of the instrument or model... It's the manufacturer. It's absolutely something that should be mentioned, but you can't assume that folks are going to have the same bridge issues as you (I didn't).

    • @manskampe1734
      @manskampe1734  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Well, I might argue that whether something sucks or not IS a matter of personal preference, and that the instrument is a product of its manufacturer. I am only sharing my personal experience, and I am sure that a lot of people will have very different impressions. OTOH I might also mention that the title is actually intended as a friendly nod to Scott Devine. :-)

    Thanks for this video, and thanks for sharing your fixes in detail with us in the description.
    I got an EHB1505MS-PLF last week, and I like the bass and the sound quite a bit. I love the light weight as well. However, there are definitely quality control issues with mine as well. All of my control knobs were either crooked, rubbing (and non-functional because of it), and one was even stripped and couldn't be tightened against the body. So when you turn the knob it just spins the electronics beneath and the wires twisted up in the back. I'm going to contact Ibanez for a replacement of the stripped pot. There are also some minor body scratches and dings and finishing issues. Nothing major, but it was a brand new bass, never played, straight from the factory unopened, so it shouldn't have these issues. I also have some glue coming out onto the fretboard from a couple of the frets, and the strings on it had some dented coils (no biggie, but wanted to mention it). After I tuned it, I had to make a bunch of adjustments (and still need to) to the string height (getting buzzing) and intonation issues as well. Nothing I couldn't fix, but it should have been set up better before it left the factory.
    Don't get me wrong, I like the bass, but I'd say Ibanez definitely have some QC issues they need to correct. The shipping box wasn't damaged, nor was the actual Ibanez box with the bass inside. Plus it was wrapped in protective foam inside the padded case. So it came this way from the factory. You don't expect this many issues on a $1,700 bass. Just a side note, I played professionally for many years, I own other basses that are better and cost more than this one, and this is my first Ibanez. So for me, I'm happy with it overall, I just don't like the extra work and having to contact Ibanez to deal with these issues, most of which should have been taken care of at the factory before they shipped it out to a retailer. The only thing I don't like about it are the cheap plastic knobs, which I plan to replace in the future. Anyhow, I hope this helps somebody who is deciding on possibly purchasing one. It's a nice bass overall, but you may have some issues to take care of if you get one. Best of luck!

      The same thing is happening with their guitars, from premium all the way up to Japanese signature models. I’m beyond disappointed with how far their quality has fallen. I’ve been playing Ibanez almost exclusively since the 80s so I know what they’re capable of. I’d love to know what’s going on with them.

    • @mjmason75
      @mjmason75 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vubear They told me that they had to increase production to keep up with demand and unfortunately they reduced some quality control so do so. They figured that the stores would handle the final setup before they put them on display. I ordered mine from Musician’s Friend because most places didn’t have them in stock, and apparently MF doesn’t check them or so any set up before they ship them out like Sweet Water does or your typical music store would.
      By the way, Ibanez did send me a replacement part for the one that was stripped, and I did upgrade the plastic knobs to nice aluminum ones. I’m taking it to a luthier to complete the rest of the set up that I’ve been a should’ve done. $150.

    • @manskampe1734
      @manskampe1734  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The EHB is more compact, lighter and a little more balanced, but the Dingwall low end is to die for. Being 2 inches shorter scale the EHB doesn't quite reach that level. Having said that, I am impressed by the tonal range of the EHB, the pickups, tone controls and right hand positioning allows for a super wide variety of tone.

    Hopefully you reached out to Ibanez to let them know. Both fixes seem reasonable especially at that price point. I know some bass builders that use two rear strap buttons; Status comes to mind. Which one you use depends on personal preference but the players body shape and how high or low you wear the instrument are major factors.

    I have the EHB-1005 and I also relocated the rear strap button for the same reason. But I settled for just below the center of the bridge. (Not as far south as the video.) Speaking of quality control, I did not have the saddle height screw issue, but, the strings were hard to keep in tune - going flat and sharp as I played. I then noticed the A string was off-center from the E and D strings. I found ALL of the saddle spacing screws completely loose. Once centered and tightened it stayed in perfect tune. Is Ibanez losing its quality mo-jo?

    Hi Mans. I've just ordered one of these exact models and wondered if Ibanez have taken note of the issues and rectified them? I tried one in the shop sitting down (and prior to seeing your video) so didn't notice the issue.....
    The other one that I am 100% going to look into is aftermarket knobs. While I found the bass size, weight, appearance, and sound to be phenomenal, I was utterly shocked at how dreadful the knobs were on this instrument; almost like an afterthought. They felt cheap, some stiff, some wobbly......not what I'd expect on a bass of this price tag....
    How do you feel about the bass more than a year later?

    WOAH!!!! Without a doubt, this is the single most EXCELLENT upgrade you can do to this bass!! I just added an extra strap pin in the position you said and the difference in ergonomics is night and day.
    The bass lies flat against my body (ridiculously so with zero movement) and now feels more like an extension of me. For some reason it also feels lighter (but maybe that's just a mental thing since the bass (as a whole) now feels infinitely more comfortable).
    Fingering is much easier across the whole span of the fretboard (actually even more so towards the 24th fret). Just had to extend my Gruvgear strap a little to accommodate the new position but man! What a difference!!!
    I feel like I have a new instrument!
    I have no idea why Ibanez think you need to tilt the bass to see the fretboard while you play when in fact it's easier to play just looking at the dots along the neck and having the instrument in a flat position. They really got this wrong!!!
    I'm now eyeing up my Warwick Corvette to see if I can do a similar thing :-)
    Thank you

    Awsome ! This is my first time meeting you. I have been looking at that bass at my favorite guitar site. One thing that I'm curious about is why they slanted the frets. But, that is a bummer that the screws have to be replaced to make the bridge work better. ? Cool you discovered how to fix it. I have been considering getting the Ibanez Workshop EHB1505 Bass Guitar Dragon Eye Burst Flat . You can hear it better than us, since you are closer to it. Sounds good from my side. Hi, thanks for the tips. Is that bass lightweight? And can you tell us your recommended way to put the additional Strap button? Where is it attached, is it on the wooden body or is it in a metal portion somewhere (sorry I cannot see it clearly). If it's in the wooden body, did you have to drill a small hole first to be able to put in a screw for the strap button? Or did you just have to put the screw right into the body directly which sounds somewhat scary as you might damage (break) the wood body (if it's a hardwood) without initially drilling it? Thank you for your advice.

    • @manskampe1734
      @manskampe1734  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's very light, around a kilo less than most others. The strap button is screwed into the wood in the thinner section under the bridge, I placed it so that it matches the original strap button like two feet when you put the bass down. You might also notice that I have swapped the original Schallers straplocks for Dunlops, I just like them better. And yes, you need to pre-drill a hole, if you're not comfortable with such surgery you might want to hand it in to an experienced instrument tech.

      @@manskampe1734 Thank you, Mans. What previous bass guitar were you using prior to this one? How do you compare their sound? Is the fan-fret design really easy to transition to coming from standard vertical frets? Congratulations on the new bass.

    • @manskampe1734
      @manskampe1734  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The transition to the EHB multiscale is easy, you might not even notice it. I also have a Dingwall ABZ and that 37" B-string makes stretches in the low end a bit more difficult, but on the EHB the left hand feels natural. Compared to my other basses the EHB stands out as very versatile tonewise, especially with the thumbrest in place you can get a wide range of sounds from your right hand technique aswell as by fiddling with the pickup balance and eq.

    I found great advice on Reddit: to get rid of the bass body’s tilt, you don’t need to add an extra strap pin lower - you just need to get a wide bass guitar strap! I did so and there is no more tilt when my EBH1505ms is on me.

      I share the same issue about the angle of the bass on the body. I'm sorry but for me this is a terrible design. Ergonomically my fingers are at a terrible angle to the fretboard and it's actually harder to play with the bass 'angled' at you rather than flat against your body.
      Anyway, I ordered another Schaller pin which arrived today so will be adding this to the lower part of my EHB1005MS to hopefully fix this problem.
      Another issue is the top guitar strap pin continuously works itself loose every time I use my bass. I find this unacceptable for a bass costing over €1,100. I will also fix this but would not expect to have to do this on an instrument at this price level.

      I find it surprisingly intuitive, I switch between multiscale and conventional 34" and 35" basses and have never had any problems adapting. In a way I'd say that multiscale feels more natural, since the scale length sort of follows both the positions of the hands and the gauges of the strings.

      No, that doesn't have the same effect at all. Shortening the strap would just make the bass ride higher, but with the lower straplock the instrument has a different balance, the angle of the body and neck is different.
      And since I still have the original strap button, I also get the added benefit of having two solid feet if I need to stand it on the ground.

  • @kentGrey

    As you know the "E" in EHB stands for ergonomic. Beyond striving for great sound, they were also focused on making it better contoured and balanced based on the human body. They likely did averages of the human body, averages of what "body types" would be interested in this kind of bass (and the likely playing styles and postures); then designed something tailored to the mean. But even that level of planning and calculation isn't going to come up with something "perfect" for everyone.
    When you view the butt end square-on and look at where the strap connector is, you'll see it is lodged in the meaty center of a triangle. This is where the body has the most integrity and stability for that end of the guitar. Having herded engineers in a previous life, when I look at where you put your second connector, it has less integrity on that thin portion of wood. Less integrity in this case with other factors considered is probably fine. If you were going to be "shredding" in a metal band while slam dancing, I'd be concerned and would suggest a more robust and engineered installation.
    Thanks for posting this review, I've just received my EHB1005SM. I 'm scouring the internet for setup tips and tricks and found this very helpful... Though I wouldn't say they "suck" out of the box.
    Cheers.

    • @manskampe1734
      @manskampe1734  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment! The geometry, weight and balance is seriously ergonomic and I am sure that the slight tilt towards the body is great for some players, just not for me. Where I placed the second lower strap button there is plenty of wood, I am confident that it will work fine for my needs.
      And, as I have mentioned before, the somewhat clickbait headline is intended as a friendly nod to Scott Devine. 🙂
