I love your first attempt at the third study! The values may not be perfect, but the strokes for the grass in the background remind me strongly of Van Gogh, which I can't complain about!

This is so great, not rambly at all! You kept to your points and themes perfectly, and no random tangents. I learnt a lot watching this, thank you!

Your work is incredible! I don't think you ramble at all, I actually think it's very interesting to hear you reflect on your work and try to learn from your 'failures'! Thanks for letting me learn with you! 😊

This vid reminded me of something that I read about the drawing process. Rather than working on each individual item one at a time and then merging them together, work on the drawing as a whole and go from general to specific. In the example the drawing started out as a series of large shapes. Then detail was added in layers so at each stage, all the elements were at the same level of detail. By constantly focusing on the work as a whole, I'd imagine it would be easier to decide what needed more detail and what needed less. Unfortunately, I'm not at this stage of learning yet so I haven't ACTUALLY TRIED this method yet but it sounded reasonable so I figured I'd share it. For what it's worth I love your work and you're an inspiration for newbies like me. ☺️

The trees in the second painting made the mood kind of calm, and the water made it more calm. And I couldn’t help but really want to live in that little cabin you painted. Haha it was really beautiful and I think you did an amazing job. I love your art so much.

The last video I did, I also did studies and included two that I really did not like at all, but that's because I really think it's important to make mistakes in art, especially when you're doing studies-which are meant to be used to test out ideas and materials and grow! I'm glad you decided to include this because it, hopefully, helps make art approachable for those who are a little intimidated because they're worried about making everything perfect all the time. The attitude that we can keep trying despite failing is important and I hope your choice to include these pieces will help someone else feel a little bit brave about their experiments, too.

The third picture looks just like the walk up the white cliffs near kingdown. I really like it.

Great studies. I really like the feeling of the second one especially. It's really interesting to see the differences in the two pictures from the third reference and how much of a difference in mood it makes with using a looser style.

I love your videos. Thanks for the thoughts on failure, that you’ve only truly failed when you admit defeat in the sense of collapsing into yourself and giving up instead of admitting what you’ve learned and pressing on. I love the grass in the second one but I do prefer the sky on the first or wish there was a bit more of that intense orange. Thanks for being brave and sharing you process. And for making such high quality content in work and voiceover. You work really hard and push yourself a lot. Sometimes too much, I suspect. I really wouldn’t mind a single painting on its own. Also, if you ever want to do this experiment again with a second try at a “failed” painting I’d love to see it. It’s fascinating. And it helps me see critically in a way that is so clearly illustrated. Thanks!

I love them both. You have a gift. Use it. Back in the old days we didn’t have choices. As a result I started again now I’m 53. And I do have to add I had both wings of colour cut off.

To be honest, I understand what you're saying about the first attempt at the third one, but I still really love it, to me it reminds me so much of those chilly English sunsets, like the end of the Pride and Prejudice movie, I love it.

Ahhhh i really like how these all turned out! I'm really in a landscape mood! I think thats so true about failure, its a gain and a learning experience! I always feel afraid to go for landscapes that feel too 'complex' or like too much is going on, but in reality i should just go for it and do it again and again if need be :) it was great seeing how you changed your approach for the last painting, very inspiring!

your art is absolutely beautiful! the way you use color and blending, as well as the dark outlines you incorporate almost remind me of some of van gogh's paintings. also, i've had the same issue with focusing too much on details in the past. something i noticed is that you didn't start with a base color, instead you did details then had a bit of a hard time putting in the background, like it the second study with the tree. i'd suggest putting down a base first, blocking out your colors and starting with the largest areas. that gives you an idea of how your painting looks, and it will be a lot easier to add details.

How do you keep the gauche in your pallet from cracking or drying out?

    • @geckonia
      @geckonia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Amanda Dalton you don’t! Haha... one thing I’ve done is add a little Gum Arabic and/or smoosh the paint back down into the pan with the flat chisel end of my paint brush.. that works if my paint is cracked but not completely dry.

Maybe you can try laying down a general wash of color first before you go in thickly. That's how I've seen others paint landscapes at least

You should pay more attention to the perspective, some of the objects specifically on the second and third studies do not have the right size. As far as i have seen you don't sketch the horizon line or a vanishing point, these tools are very helpful to create depth and gives you the possibility of having a "size scale" to make the painting or in this case the study a more realistic looking. But besides that you have a great skill and control of the gouache.

I love to see your studies. I haven't notice the effect on recent video but this one is kind of flashing because of the fast-forward and your arm casting shadows when your reach for your palette... It's a bit annoying to watch. But as I said, I think you've solve this problem, but you should keep it in mind if you repeat this setup.

Lovely paintings. I found it difficult to watch this video. I think your camera's white balance must set to automatic. It needs to be set to manual so it doesn't try to compensate constantly for the changes in lighting when you move your hand in and out of screen, which causes flashing, especially distracting with the sped up frame rate. I fast forwarded thru the video tho, so I could see the stages and final work as stills.
