The West Block: Canada now "the outlier" in NATO on defence spending, US ambassador says

- Ahead of the summer NATO Summit in Washington, D.C., a bipartisan group of U.S. senators have written a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urging him to meet the NATO two per cent of GDP defence spending target. ‘The West Block’ host Mercedes Stephenson sits down with David Cohen, U.S. Ambassador to Canada, to discuss if the White House shares the senators’ disappointment that Canada won’t reach its NATO commitment this decade. Ambassador Cohen also addresses Canada’s response to the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor seeking arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders, including Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu.
Plus, the federal government’s new bail reforms came into effect earlier this year. Some of the new measures includes an expansion of the reverse-onus provisions for repeat offenders-where the accused now has to argue to the court why they should be granted bail, instead of the Crown having to prove why bail should be denied. Stephenson speaks with Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth (President of Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police) and RCMP Deputy Commissioner Jodie Boudreau about the impacts of the bail reforms on the front lines for police.

Trudeau has failed Canadians on every level. Disgusting.
Canadians have also failed Canada on every level by continually voting for Trudeau, or for his Parliamentary ally Singh.

The first past the post electoral system is the root cause of too many of these issues. Short sighted politicians (this issue among others) pandering to their base and then bribing the electorate just before every election. 169 pro rep/169 ranked. The majority are in the middle, not at the political extremes.
In the last election only the Green party had a skewed seats to votes one. Otherwise, it was pretty close.
@@Bigchuckers For sure. But FPTP leads voters to fear based voting - how many more voters would've voted Green, NDP, Block , PP etc. if felt able to vote their truth instead of fear of one party or another being elected? The hybrid system suggested would allow for both your true political choice and a choice of local representative. This allows for more flexibility for local representatives to vote in accordance with their constituents vs toeing the line of the PMO's (Dictator's) office. That office (or the party line) essentially hamstrings the democratic process.

What's it like where everyone in the world who doesn't agree with what you think is a Russian troll?
There is no threat that Russia will come and invade Canada by air or sea. It's simply not a plausible scenario.
Well, the way I see it - Canada / US has the longest unprotected boarder in world. We don't spend because we know that the US would protect us from any kind of foreign invasion. It's been like that a long time, probably since NATO was created. That's how I see it anyway
This has nothing to do with our boarder. It's about NATO.
And why should US pay to defend Canada ? Canada needs its own defence system as all countries do, we are not any more special than anyone else. You sound like we are entitled to defence from other countries for free?? Sorry, don’t work that way.

For some " senator" who can't even take care of their obligations for the Gazan, Haiti, new Caledonia, the US have no right to complain, we are members of IOC, UN, UNWRA, UNDRP, WE put forward food numerous food donations, send our medical doctors and nurses lives at risk, some were killed, most were verbally attacked, Canada has done a lot to give peace to the regions, including several years in Ukraine. The US cannot even be bothered to follow ICJ rulings, your just complaining for the sake of complaining cause things aren't going your way, this isn't Canada's fault we are doing the best we can.
You are aware that Trudeau has been sending our military to train "Ukrainian battalions" (azov, C14 etc.etc.) since 2015+. Odessa massacre May /2/14. Nothing said about that nor helped or cared? Zelly cancelled their annual memorial service, he put ministers & men of God in prison? That's definitely not a democracy, it's a dictatorship. Russia wasn't a threat to Canada? Are u aware that Kyiv has more nightclubs now than before in February 2022? Who paid for that? Zelly's county is at war so his priorities are to build numerous nightclubs in Kyiv? All night street parties, dancing, drinking , drugs. Definitely wouldn't know there's a war in Kyiv for now? No sirens, no shelling, no missiles, nobody screaming nor running to bunkers? Just one big party & not on their dime. Canada had no business getting involved! Trudeau should clean up the massive mess he created in Canada. Ukraine is NOT even in NATO?
