    Another favourite one of mine. 'Miles to go before I sleep' -- but sleep we must -- the inevitable 'sleep' which draws an end to the journey of every traveller.

    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the possibility of the rider contemplating taking his own life.
    He’s out on the darkest evening of the year (unlike the wealthy people in the village). He doesn’t want to be, but he has to be against his will - he has obligations. He regrets his life. If he could, he would enjoy freedom of choice, but maybe he made poor decisions that led him to a less fulfilling life.
    How easy would it be for him to walk into the woods (lovely, dark and deep) and sleep forever? BUT, he has promises to keep … things that prevent him from “sleeping.”
    Hands down my favorite poem.
