This has to be one of the most underrated Sci-Fi films of all times. This could of been made last week. It's the visuals that make it work. And that GUI for the light table...That's a must have. All to that stunning music!
I love Oblivion - it's one of the greatest films I've seen in years. Everything was just perfect: the touching story, the excellent acting, the stunning visuals...and, of course, that unforgettable, absolutely epic soundtrack. This film is destined to be a cult classic one day.
This movie was based on Joseph Kosinski's Unpublished Graphic Novel by the same name. I find it awesome that he went on to take that idea and make it into a film. That said, I feel like if i were to take my novel, once complete, to one director and put it in his hands to make it a film, he would be the guy i'd trust. Here's why, The fact that he's taken the reins on a high profile cult classic like Tron, and the fact that he understands the care involved in making his own work come to life as intended, makes me think he's someone who cares about quality and staying true to source material.
Great movie. Perfect soundtrack. Unique design (specially the mean looking drones, how they managed to make a mechanical thing that is almost like a ball look mean, is amazing).
I know, I"ve seen like a million time. It takes you into fantasy that makes you wanna be there, on the tower, hot chic, pool, fighting aliens, what more would possibly want, I love this movie !!!
Film making and architecture are very similar in many ways; they are the two most expensive art forms in the world, a visionary leads a team of informed technicians, they are made for large numbers of people to experience at once but as individuals, they both create spaces, or the illusion of a space, that the public can experience only psychologically. For example, film is different than photography because of one element: time. A human designed construct. The illusion of movement is the attraction, you don't watch the screen, you watch the people and follow the story. The screen just holds all these things, it's a vessel. Buildings are the vessel that hold the spaces that make them great, Grand Central, the Guggenheim, SFMOMA, Notre Dame; all defined by the space in which people interact, not the walls or roof that frame the spaces. The "place" exists only in the imagination. Film and architecture: time and space defined. A unique experience for each and every person. Peter Greenaway was trained as an architect, his films reflect that mindset in every shot.
I agree completely, especially now that there is more visualization tool overlap between the two fields. From modeling and animation software (Maya/3D Studio/Alias) to production (Rhino, CADCAM, CNC machining). VR is the next frontier of environmental design where filmmaking and architectural design are essentially interchangeable skills.
C4V31R4 N3GR4 GR4PH1CS I believe it was because he's using a mac and there's no BF3 for OSX. And he's working on HUD's also, so its clearly an inspiration or he's using like a "guide" to know where he should place the altitude...speed...g force..etc..
Loved the movie. Visually stunning, acting was great, full of unexpected "mind blown" moments (which is what I'm always waiting for in a sci-fi movie). They've taken a pretty old theme (alien invasion) and added a very interesting and refreshing take on it. I also loved how the trailer didn't give away any crucial plot lines. Definitely worth going to the cinema for this one.
This movie has amazing cinematography. In fact, it's one of the best movies I've seen with spectacular, eye-popping, gorgeous photo-realistic and realistic cinematography.
Such a cool movie. I don't understand why it didn't get better reviews. I mean, it wasn't the greatest movie ever, but it definitely was quite something to watch. And m83's soundtrack was AMAZING!
I FUCKING LOVED LOVED LOOOOVED THIS MOVIE!!! Fucking OCD perfection in every way. Claudio Miranda, the art directors and the sound engineer all deserve 10 Oscars, BAFTAS, Goyas, Golden Bears EACH!!!
Oblivion is a great movie !! Urging, fluent & original. And I think Tom Cruise is a perfect actor portraying the role, a person who is facing doomsday or earth's crisis.
Great concept art ever. I think most of the science fiction movies are future inventions. So the producers are the scientists. Great work team Oblivion.
some of the the best world building I've seen in a film... the set of tower 49 is stunning... fantastic cinematography and sound effects... plus M83's music is amazing
I just rewatched Oblivion. I always wanted to come back to it so now i did. It still holds up pretty well. I think it's because it's not a space spectacle but a real story. I also loved that they mentioned 2Advanced here. When i first saw the movie and all the UIs i first thought of Eric Jordan. I wonder if he has ever done any film work. It was definitely great to have many talented designers working on the film, Daniel Simon as well. Anyways, i am a UI/UX designer since 1999 and this movie will forever be one of my favorite sci-fi films.
Well as Chestifie mentions some people find it interesting. "Gmunk" is not your usual designer. He is among the few that influenced the motion and UI design industry since early 2000. If you look twice then you'll notice there's a style shift in Hollywood's UIs from the first Terminator to the latest Iron Man. That shift started by 2000 and is partly thanks to guys like Gmunk.
From a passionate fan of Mr Tom Cruise I had expected no less than this astonishing eloquence and downright silver-tongued faculty of speech that you displayed :)
I love this damn movie, it's one of my favorite sci-fi films of the 2000s, and probably in my top three Tom Cruise films, and he's got so many good ones. Joseph is such an amazing director, I know it's unlikely but I really wish they do some kind of sequel or prequel, the story's. So good
I'm a UI designer and I can't help but take notice of UI designs in movies / TV shows. Always wondered who had those roles. And I really enjoyed having a look into that line of work. Personally I would love it. So calm down mate, some people find it interesting.
Esta pelicula ha recibido muchas criticas, pero para mi fue increible, unos efectos constantes y fantasticos, y una trama unica y especial, ni hablar de las grandes actuaciones de los actores; Simplemente una pelicula espectacular.
Yeah I get it, I just personally think it was better than the 50% general consensus. It was definitely a giant mash-up of so many sci-fi movies, especially Prometheus, which I loved. Gotta love Iceland. :)
He's also a pretty stand-up guy who has, on several occasions, put himself in danger to help others. Yeah, he's crazy, but he's the right kind of crazy.
As beautiful and high quality as this film was it still came off as a medium sized movie. They could have easily beefed up the story for this movie so that it could have been bigger or a series and having the TET blow up in the final. I wished they did. But as it is it's a great film.
Agreed. And fast and furious 6 is just an action movie with guns 'n' shit. just the same you know. This was actually something interresting. Meanwhile theres alot of complicated stuff in the movie. you're sitting there with alot of questions in your hands but will be answered. The idea of making a movie about cloning. i have to say this is actually gonna be a favorite one day. And the soundtracks definently made the experience alot better.
Yeah, I can see how this stuff is worth showing and is of interest - my issue is really with how much of an impact the UI design had on the world. Not degrading the importance of UI design, just questioning it's relevance in a movie like that. I mean, you have Tom Cruise, you have a big budget and space ships, you have that ginger chick... and BTW the UI's are laid out on a grid. It kinda drops relevance if you know what I mean.
Well, I'm not denying Tom Cruise's acting skills. I'm saying I can't praise him for his skills/talent. And what I absolutely can't do is paying money to see him, which will obviously arrive in his pocket sooner or later.
To add: I can only emphasize what I have said before: I will not tolerant the intolerant. And I don't think anybody should. And I absolutely believe that if mankind would be more consequent on their ridicule against the intolerant, we would live in a much better world.
I am an architect, i like doing illustrations i like drawing. I had an interest in producing music in the past. I also like movies. What should i do to become a movie director or art director?

@@emmanueloluga9770 Cheers....5 months later! 😁
I hope so. Ive seen the film 3 times now
great movie with great cinematography.. I really enjoyed the product designs, UI designs and architecture..
it actually felt "liveable" watching it on my local cinema back then!too bad nobody uses Joe anymore!
there were no products
The sound effect for the drones were incredible. The movie is like a mixture of "moon" and "2001" though
And starwaves part soundtrack it´s like Vangelis
@eating sugar no papa I know. Did they mean good or bad?
Moon? Ya, some similarities.
2001? Umm....lololol?
Wow.
Bravo! Just blew me away. A sci fi movie should take you into another world and convince you it exists. This movie did just that. 10/10 from me.

Andy C. Did you complete your novel?
Great movie. Perfect soundtrack. Unique design (specially the mean looking drones, how they managed to make a mechanical thing that is almost like a ball look mean, is amazing).
one of the greatest movies of all time , I love it , I hope they can make a part 2 please
I Love it to, but please dont let there be a part two^^ It could only get worse from this starting point....
No part 2, it's perfect as it is
I know, I"ve seen like a million time. It takes you into fantasy that makes you wanna be there, on the tower, hot chic, pool, fighting aliens, what more would possibly want, I love this movie !!!
Very amazing UI work, I love how the actors interact with the actual UI instead of putting it in post. Makes me want to watch this in the theater.

The movie was good. The plot had a classic scifi/twilight zone feel.
Loved the movie. Visually stunning, acting was great, full of unexpected "mind blown" moments (which is what I'm always waiting for in a sci-fi movie). This film's UI makes me weak in the knees
This movie has amazing cinematography. In fact, it's one of the best movies I've seen with spectacular, eye-popping, gorgeous photo-realistic and realistic cinematography.

awesome talented visual designers
Oblivion is a great movie !! Urging, fluent & original. And I think Tom Cruise is a perfect actor portraying the role, a person who is facing doomsday or earth's crisis.
I watched it 4 TIMES in Cinema... i cant remember when id watched a movie 4 times

Great concept art ever. I think most of the science fiction movies are future inventions. So the producers are the scientists. Great work team Oblivion.
Simply Amazing... I was fan of Gmunks stuff back in the day but this is just an eye candy.
This movie is amazing.
Visual and musical brilliance from Tron 2.0 with sci-fi ideas of the 80s.
Loved it.
some of the the best world building I've seen in a film... the set of tower 49 is stunning... fantastic cinematography and sound effects... plus M83's music is amazing
It is a great movie. Eye & mind candy. Totally underrated.
Joe Kosinski is a genius.
GREAT MOVIE !!!

@@waynehedd Cheesy but enjoyable nonetheless.
One of my faves from this year. And that's saying something, because there have been a ton of good sci-fi movies.
This movie was so awesome.

I just saw this movie and really liked it. After Prometheus I almost lost my love for science fiction films. Now I'm excited about them again.

Fantastic work!
Awesome movie great job
Love the work
Absolutely beautifull!!!!!
Major props to this movie!
i really appreciated the avoidance of greenscreen where possible.
this movie was great and had a respect for the audience i really found great
Best Sci-Fi film I've seen in a long time! well done to everyone involved.
My hats off to the creators - very creative and it takes a different set of mind to come up with such technology and visual effects.
I'm a UI designer and I can't help but take notice of UI designs in movies / TV shows. Always wondered who had those roles. And I really enjoyed having a look into that line of work. Personally I would love it. So calm down mate, some people find it interesting.

The movie is awesome. I gotta see it again
Great and inspiring! Thanks for posting this.
All of the in camera work really adds something special to this movie imo, it just fell short in a few other areas. Still a great film though.
So stoked for this movie
All i can say is graphic perfection. So freakingly good.
I love when they tell you what programs they use!
Kosinski and Nolan are my favorite directors
The very best movie this year-
I hope they do one of these episodes for 'Elysium', Syd Mead is an exceptional visionary.
Very good Movie, M83 did a great Soundtrack!!
Yeah I get it, I just personally think it was better than the 50% general consensus. It was definitely a giant mash-up of so many sci-fi movies, especially Prometheus, which I loved. Gotta love Iceland. :)
Its has a intriguing story line.
That architecture's are stunning perfect. I can't close my eye's...
Visually and audibly incredible. If only it had a better developed plot.
I would love, absolutely love a google map overlay like the end credits.
He's also a pretty stand-up guy who has, on several occasions, put himself in danger to help others. Yeah, he's crazy, but he's the right kind of crazy.
Well, I did have something to think about after walking away from the movie. Beautiful art.
Loved this flick, felt like classic Sci-fi.
Huh the sky tower scene with the projector in the background set-up is similar to the Mandalorian series production..
I see a little bit of everything in this movie, from Total Recall, V, Matrix, Star Wars, and the Predator.
I was like “this movie has a Tron Legacy vibe” but it’s the same director so I am glad it is the same guy.
As beautiful and high quality as this film was it still came off as a medium sized movie. They could have easily beefed up the story for this movie so that it could have been bigger or a series and having the TET blow up in the final. I wished they did. But as it is it's a great film.
awesome movie! best sci-fi I've seen since Star Wars
You know what, I only want have a sky tower, that's all. With Vicca too...
Oh Hell Yes... I want to live in this Sky Tower, But Just Imagine How You Could Live Almost Anywhere & Helo To Work Each Day!
Storyline evaporated two thirds through truly sux
awesome GMUNK is legend!
Everything on this movie was perfect.even Tom Cruise who I don't respect much as an actor. Even his performance was perfect!
This looks great.
I hope u guys are going to be involved in making iOS 8 with all these "mind blowing" art ideas.
I just saw the movie. I liked it. It's not the best movie I have ever seen but i'll watch it again when it's on DVD.
I want a ui like that on my pc, anyone know of something similar to this design like rainmeter ...
if anyone is wondering what software they use it's called cinima 4D
Yes, exactly, I would still think he's a terrible dictator but I would not be able to deny his musical talent.
love Gmunk
2:41 I didn't know Antman was a design director
So this was sortof like mandalorian predecessor with the screens. Great flick
Agreed.
And fast and furious 6 is just an action movie with guns 'n' shit. just the same you know.

Gmunk was using Illustrator, the brief UI shot of the 3D app was Cinema 4D.
looks sick

His philosophy needs to spread!
he did put in a disclaimer stating 'arguably' biggest movie star. Definite emphasis on the argue! haha
The graphics are amazing and definitely set a new benchmark.
However everyone I know that went to see it said the story line was completely useless.
