Today, I made a homeless care video that can satisfy both care and makeup at the same time!
I tried to make it realistic as if I was caring for the homeless myself, and I hope the viewers feel that way too!!

They used a tone-up cream. Yes, the creams generally make the skin lighter. No it’s not “white washing” - most of Asia has had the concept of darker skin being associated with being poor (working in the sun vs lounging inside) for longer than they’ve had any contact with white people. While I agree that darker skin is beautiful just the same as light skin, we need to remember that not all cultural norms are based on western ideals. Sometimes they exist because of concepts that emerged everywhere for relatively the same reason. It’s the convergent evolution of beauty standards. Please be kind to Smile Bam for applying makeup as she normally would as per many K-Beauty styles. Those of you who are familiar with K-Beauty will understand Smile Bam meant no harm by it.

just because its normalised doesn't mean it's not wrong. the intention may not have been harm, but it re-enforces stereotypes about darker skinned asians being unclean, poor and dirty. i am both familiar with kbeauty and am Indian myself, where colourism is heightened by the social effects of the caste system root in Hinduism that was hijacked by colonisers to put themselves up in society and separating themselves from darker skinned Indians, and deprive them of rights. I am aware the situation in other countries is less rooted in colonialism, however the dangers and mental health impacts of skin bleaching, using lighter foundation (only being considered pretty or worthy of respect in makeup), and skin lightening creams is vastly overlooked in your comment, as well as the push (inability to get jobs, bullying, etc) against people with darker skin in countries with high beauty standards, such as Korea. Though you argue it is a beauty standard and the result of societal beliefs, don't you think continuing to perpetuate these stereotypes just continues to harm actual people? She is depicted as poor, dirty and unclean when she is darker skinned and pretty, elegant, clean and wealthy when she is lighter skinned.
western beauty standard gets discussed a lot - along with the effects of plastic surgery, colourism, diet culture, ethnic ambiguity rising as a beauty trend, blackfishing, asian fishing, social media and photoshop. heck - even implications of film, tv and youtube videos. and kbeauty and asian beauty standards should be able to be criticised to the same extent.
I personally dont think smile bams video is necessarily going to cause someone to want their skin to be lightened, but it is yet another bucket of water added on to the 10 foot wave of representations of beauty saying lighter is better.

@@elitecircle__ uh if the translation i got of that is correct, it's not necessarily white supremacist, however it is colourist. India, the Philippines and other countries with similar colonial history are rooted in white supremacy, however that doesn't mean colourism is less significant in countries like China and Korea, and I think I distinguished those in my first comment. Maybe I didn't because the first person's comment explained its historical roots in other parts of asia.
Anyway, colourism is discrimination based on skin shade, and generally within the same ethnic group. The dangers of skin bleaching, skin lightening creams as well as the mental and social impacts of skin lightening and colourism are not insignificant - there's a reason that it's such a lucrative market. You should watch cinema therapy's video on zootopia, it explains the impacts of subconcious bias, though it is in terms of racism it also applies to colourism, homophobia, transphobia, basically everything, and the way it impacts the lives of the people the bias is against.

I understand the beauty standards in South Korea, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to be happy at the such difference even if she’s purely fictional. Everyone’s talking about how terrible the skin lightening cream was when this lady had two teeth pulled without anesthesia. Imagine if someone told you they’re gonna give you a makeover and they PULLED your TEETH without anesthesia. And she didn’t even flinch! This lady has nerves of steel.

It’s a thing in Asian culture that lighter skin is prettier it has nothing to do with foundation it’s a beauty treatment there I think and no it’s not because it comes from western ideals they just thought that darker skin means they were working out in the fields where as lighter skin means they were at home relaxing it’s not white washing most people get that wrong and hate when it’s just part of their ideals

Most of the time when someone puts on makeup it's not because they think they're ugly, just because they made the skin a little lighter doesn't mean that they think the darker skin is ugly, the only reason the skin looked better in the after is because the blemishes and stuff were covered up. literally any skin color could look good as long as you're taking good care of it.

Even though thay do perfect makeover she didn't smile at all not even in the end. It's actually sad that people think it's be happier when they look good. Inner beauty, happy thoughts and peace are much more important. I know this is just a video but i noticed that and i have to say it.
Great video, and good quality as always. I'm looking at the comment section, and it always amazes me how people who are used to having their darker skin (and curlier hair) put down and covered up with makeup 2 shades too light in their own countries often say they feel "freer" when traveling to other places where diversity is accepted yet can't put 2 and 2 together 👀
