This brings back not so good memories of my childhood. We were touring with a caravan, and went over the Devil's elbow [by mistake], in the mid-60's. On the way up, we met a hay-wagon on the way down! Not being able to reverse, we moved perilously close to the edge to allow it to pass. On top of that, I heard my father saying "That's the last gear", and being just a child, I started to cry and panic because we had 'no gears left' 🤣 I don't remember coming into a village the other side, but my mother often talked about the look of shock on the villagers faces.
