If you put 2 wedges in the top you could have blown right through your first cut from the top down. Chaps a helmet and gloves, glasses, mask. Less than 100 bucks on Amazon.
I am waiting for the rain to stop and the ground to dry up a little and then I think I'll have a video or two of making some boards out of these logs. It's going to be some work but it's a lot of fun too. As always thanks for watching.
Everybody commenting on the saw running bad and safety gear , but no one noticed the saw is brand new, not a flake of wood oil or scratch, and of course its not even being broken in properly.
I started cutting like you in the video. Finally my buddy convinced me I was a real idiot for not getting a pair of chaps . I never cut without them now. When shit happens the chaps cant hurt to have them on. Just sayin.
john reilly about half a turn in on the high and mannn you will be like what happened...... hopefully you did this already tho.. keep up the good work... and I ran/tuned my buddies 880... that thing is no joke... thought my 461 was an animal... the 880 is the closest thing you will get to having a dirtbike strapped to a saw as you can get and still get a warranty...
I try to tell people just that, running normal bars on a monster saw is like using a semi to pull your utility trailer. Its slower, and you will pay out the gas pump.
Pro saw. Amateur operator. Get a pro to show you what a great saw you have. Practice and you'll get better. Get some safety gear. Chain saws make a mess of human flesh
John Woofter safety gear? I have been cutting for 35 years never used any safety gear. Why do you need that? Safety gear is for idiots like you. I cut 6 days a week never wear any never will and never cut myself cause i am not stupid

Just a tip: Not where I would make the first cut. I'd get that top out first (but leave a few limbs (trimmed back) for stability). Then (since you appear to be where equipment can access it) flip it to the ground with a chain/equipment.
@@sunsetrailfan2004 Really? Then why does the owners manual for the ms 880 say that the saw should not be full throttled off load for the first three tank fillings this avoids unnecessary high loads as all moving parts have to bed in during the brake in period the saw will develop maximum power after the first 5 to 15 tank fillings? Yes there is a brake in period on all chainsaws even if it doesn't say it in the manual all chainsaws get faster and more powerful as they are used more and more and how you treat them for the first couple tank fillings will affect the saw for its life span.
Sweet saw!! Too bad about the rot, but looks like you might have a few hundred board feet of oak at least. Fun watching that saw chew through that log. Hope you and the family are well Ben.
Thanks Mike, I'll get some boards from this tree for sure. Wish it was solid all the way to get some really nice slabs but maybe on the next one. Keep up the good work on your channel looks like it's coming along good.
Is it true that if you run fuel with ethanol in a Stihl saw that it voids the warranty? I know that ethanol is bad for engines big and small and is a total scam. Someone told me about this warranty issue and I am just curious.
It's always a disappointment when that happens. You think you've got a good solid tree for lumber and you get this. Depending on how you mill it you can still get some nice lumber from it. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out and how much lumber you get from that tree. Always nice to see a notification of you having a new video up. Thanks for letting us see the process of cutting this tree up in sections. I'm looking forward to more. Hope you have a good day!

Too bad about the rot where it's the thickest diameter. Still lots of good wood for slabs and firewood. That chainsaw is huge on its own but was dwarfed by that huge tree! Looking forward to more of these videos😊
It’s amazing how many chainsaw videos there are with people that don’t use any safety gear. Maybe watch some chainsaw injury/accident videos where chips of wood take eyes out.
Ben Watched because I wanted to see someone use the 880 in real life...I do a lot of slabs with oak with my smaller older 039 it just doesnt have the power with a 32 inch bar...Im thinking of the 661 or 880...Do you think the 880 is too big a saw with a 36 bar with the Alaskan portable saw mill???Is it to big to handle or would you think the 661 with a 36 in bar would be big enough...Oak is a beast to mill....Just subscribed Ill be watching all your vids from now on...Since Im asking a ton of questions , what is the best way you use to cure the oak slabs and lumber you mill.
Lol, that's a mouthful let's see... First of all if I had to do it all over I think I would have went with the 661. The 880 has all special parts even the bar nuts are different. Everything I need I have to order and wait for it. The bar I mill with is a 47" bar and it cuts like butter. I think the 404 chain is a beast with the 880. So it has its pros and cons. It is a big saw and kind of intimidating but after a couple uses it is like any other saw and I don't really notice the weight so much. I wouldn't want to go through the woods with it all day but for bucking large logs and milling big slabs it's nice to have. As far as curing the lumber I simply air dry the lumber keeping it dry under a piece of tin in the yard for about a year or so depending on the thickness. Some people use anchor seal to seal the end of the log I dont. Hope this answers some of your questions, thanks for watching.
@@Benssawmill Wow. I have been cutting slabs like I am possessed now. I got the 661 and am so happy with it. I have 20 or so fantastic oak slabs . He showed me a nasty cut on his arm from a mistake he had made. I have the winch set up and chaps. I hope you get some chaps if you keep cutting. Thx for the reply ..
If you did not get a cord of fire wood from that tree I would be surprised, even with the void and rot. Either that is really hard wood or your chain could be a little bit sharper. Your chain saw should not have to work as hard as it is in this clip to make the cuts your making.
Nice saw. At first I thought you wanted fire wood and then I realized you want saw logs. Nice tree for both. I'm surprised there aren't more angry millennials ripping on you about the lack of safety gear. Their teachers dont teach them the importance of freedom. I like how you start off with gloves and then take them off. Whatever works for you man. I wear eye and ear protection and after 20 years of heating my house with wood I've never been hurt. I bet the guys telling you to wear chaps have very little real experience because the experienced guys who wear them dont give a crap if other people do.
Im an amateur when it come to using a chainsaw, but why would you undercut last? Surely that's a recipe for the trunk to pinch down, clamping the saw??
When there big like that a lot of times one is disappointed but sometimes there solid and they make nice wood....It`s all good in the stove but I`m sure you can salvage a lot out of this tree....If this tree comes from the city I hope you don`t pick up a spike or a horseshoe in it but I guess it would be at a why....can we see you load this or work it on the spot.....CHEERS

I chose not to wear them. I was waiting for someone to complain about that. Personal protection is a personal choice and making the few cuts that I did here I felt comfortable without them. Every person needs to make their own choice as to what is safe. You can wear all the protective gear in the world and still get hurt. Having your mind on task and being aware of what your doing is the top priority.
I use my chainsaw 28" bar Husq 576xp in flip flops shorts, no shirt and sunglasses for years and never had any issue but get dirty if I rip with the woodships
I have a big honkin Black walnut very similiar to that oak, the rot/soft is about the same. Has a major lean out of the State road in front of my house, it aint gonna be fun when it comes time to cut that bad boy up. Hopefully you get some decent footage.
When is a tree is like that you want to start your cut from the bottom to prevent the bar from getting pinched they way you are cutting is causing compression that gets the saw stuck
You do understand how physics works right? If you cut from the bottom you’re giving the tree a place to start spreading as the weight makes it drop then cutting from the top will pinch the bar because you’ve already cut the bottom...
I should have a video out this week on the milling. It's hot this week going through a heat wave over 90 for the whole week so it's drying out nice. Should be able to haul some logs through the yard without sinking now.
Nice work with the cutting of that tree mate and like you said on an earlier comment regarding the PPE that it’s a personal choice but surely you can chuck on some ear muffs to protect your ears. I’ve used my 391 for 5 mins without ear muffs and you know about it the next day so I can’t imagine the punishment your ears took from the 880
