@@kennybrown3302Actually the Ijaw/Ibani people were more slave catchers than slaves themselves!!
The Ijo City States as they were known were well organised by their family lineages!
They became beneficial to the slave industry because of their knowledge of the riverine areas and how they could navigate the numerous creeks!
The Ijaws would then plan raids deep into the hinterlands to capture other ethnicities .
It was said that when they accosted people, they would speak in their native languages to such a person, and if the persons couldn't answer back fluently in Ijaw language, they were fair game to be made captive!
They therefore were more like the middle men and partners of the Europeans!
It was such interactions over many decades , including social and sexual liaisons between the European merchants and the daughters of the tribal chiefs that spurned those names... Jacks, Briggs, Peterside, Hart , Princewill, West, Pepple and all such names in the region!
