Dark Dawn shouldn't have been a direct sequel. They should have either set it thousands of years apart from the originals, or just completely reboot the IP ala FF.
Loved how magic powers used in battle were also used so frequently in the actual world and towns. And that the dungeons had the puzzles to break up the monotony. Wish more jrpgs had those features and less flat/empty hallways or rooms filled with just monsters.
Thank you very much for doing Focus theme view for Golden Sun. I hope this will help generate interest in The Gaming Community again and help the Creator's finish the 4th game in this series.
As Having Golden Sun part of my life ever since I was a small boy this game was always my favorite and I loved hearing you talk about this game like this. The game will always be part of my life and I will always remember it and most of all I will never lose hope for something new. Great Video!!!
All these comparisons of Golden Sun with "other JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Pokémon" completely miss the mark of how we perceived all three of these franchises when we were 12. We treated each of them as unique and standing on their own merits, because we wouldn't have known what a "JRPG" even was. Pokémon, for example, was definitely something we saw more as a big media spectacle than a game, especially with the then current Ruby and Sapphire versions having been a downgrade compared to Gold and Silver in almost every aspect that mattered. The Golden Sun games are also far from obscure. They received glowing reviews everywhere, and were all the rage even in the small-town neighborhood I grew up in. Most sentences that mentioned these games would end in an exclamation mark. Golden Sun is the Chrono Trigger of the late Millenial generation, and *all* of us still remember it fondly.
Can't believe it took me a while to find this video. I love how indepth you go on not just Camelot but the entire history of JRPGs as a whole. Here's hoping Camelot fixes themselves and makes another Golden Sun. Mario Tennis Aces is the best game they've made in a long time which gives me hope
Great job on this video! Let's hope we'll see some worthy sequel someday. This series deserve the chance Fire Emblem received on "Awakening". Intelligent systems was on the verge of shutting down the saga and yet - it got incredibly popular in the west in just few years. I still root for GS4.
This is such a good video, that since it came out, ive watched it at least once every year (by accident, youtube recommendations are epic) and i always watch the full thing! :)
These games hold a special place in my heart. I still remember the quote I used to get people to play it: "They put a PS1 game on the GBA on two cartridges."

Golden sun is my most cherished game series. I've loved it to pieces and played it so many times, and I never truly lose hope for more games, or even just representation elsewhere, like smash. I don't really think this series will come back, I guess I just don't want to get hurt really. But the day it does, I will be shedding tears of joy. At the very least this video has made me want to replay the games AGAIN, so thanks!
This was a 2 hour vid. This is a 2 hour vid that i watched entirely. This was amazing. It gives me a littlr bit more hope that GS can Become big once again and that its game can be remembered forever no matter when. Like 🖒
I liked that characters would revert to defending if their target was defeated. It added more strategy when selecting actions that all other RPGs lack. Sa-Ga is the only RPG with an equally deeper turn-based combat system.
Thanks so much for doing this lengthy retrospective. It helped scratch that GS itch. Wish they would make a 4 but I still need to play 3. If only they would release these on the virtual console.
I want all 3 Golden Suns remade on the successor of the switch, with an all-new, sexy 3D engine. And then possibly a new, quality made, ripened 4th one.
This game was punishing and the boss are super hard. Just when you think you beat the boss BAM! they throw you with another boss form. I remember dying a few time on the final boss. I played part 2 beat it too. Sadly, I never play the new DS version.
I watched it all now, very well done and informed, the part where you talk about the design philosophy of modern games is a bit long but I liked it! Subscribed to you for more videos of this quality!
I so want Golden Sun 1 and 2 remastered for Switch. I'd buy them separately. Loved your video, man. Gonna go through them again. I only did Dark Dawn once when it first came out, but I may even give that another shot too.
20 years later and it's still one of the best experiences I've had in gaming. I love the battle and customization systems in the game. Just something like being able to change classes mid-fight is something very few games do, and I've yet to see a single game do it better than Golden Sun.
Exactly. The whole game is just created to be simple at first glance, and yet you gradually uncover how deep, complex and intelligent it is. This is a very unique and memorable experience. I am still amazed at how Camelot was able to pull it off on GBA.
Stellar video my dude, I watched the whole thing. You did a good job putting the development of the games into perspective. The series felt complete after The Lost Age, and it was weird having a sequel so many years after the original games, but I get that they have to make money and they did us (the fans) a favor by making Dark Dawn. It just would have really scratched the itch that 1 and 2 left when I was a kid tho, ya know? Lets just hope they decide port the series to the switch, it’s a good fit for the console and it’ll get a lot of good exposure.
So I have some critiques. So for one I feel you got caught up for way too long talking about the gaming industry as a whole after talking about Dark Dawn. As it definitely went way off topic, even if I understood where you were going with it. I feel you could have summed it up easily with "Camelot is old fashioned, and while other companies have grown to evolve, they haven't yet." But that said I liked your editing, just there was a TON of fluff in here that I felt didn't need to be here, and near ruined the video for me. That said I appreciate you making a restrospective in the first place, and I did learn a few things. I love Golden Sun, and I really do hope it comes back in some form, as nothing can ever really replace the games for me. Good work, and hope this helps with future retrospectives. :)
Thanks for your feedback and your continued support. I know it may have seemed to go on a bit too long with the conclusion part of my retrospective, but I assure you that future retrospectives won't go on that long with talking about those bits as I usually see what I do as just one time things. Say, for instance, if I choose to do a Lunar Retrospective, I wouldn't have to talk about all those things in the conclusion bit like what I did for this retrospective because I already made my point. However, I felt that what I did was necessary for this retrospective because I never expressed myself in such great detail about certain sectors where some would probably have no idea what I would be talking about if I kept it short. However, in future retrospectives where I remain minimal in those conclusive bits then it'll be easier for my viewers to reflect back with what I was talking about in this retrospective when it comes to a new one. In the end, I appreciate your constructive criticism and it'll definitely be something that I'll remember the next time when I do a one-shot retrospective on another game series. Even though it may have seemed to ruin the experience for you in certain areas, but I can't guarantee you that that extra fluff won't go away in future retrospectives I do. I'm just more of a guy who loves to be very informative than keeping things really short because when covering RPGs, in general, there is so much to talk about than something more simple like a 2D platformer. Either way, thanks for your continued support and stay glued for more retrospectives I work on! :)
What struck me more is that some parts of the Dark Dawn segment feel like a slight paraphrase of the "What happened to Golden Sun?" video someone posted last year, right down to using several of the same adjectives and phrases. 0.o
I won't deny that Lucky Crit was one of the many influences to this retrospective I made and that some of the stuff he said I did paraphrase in this video, but not everything was a carbon copy of his video within this one. Anyone is going to paraphrase other people, but they should not repeat what they said from beginning to end because that would signal any other video as a complete clone of his. I understand you sounding weird and I do intend to improve in future videos, but paraphrasing is going to occur with literally anyone when they make something like this video I made. I appreciate your concerns, though. :)
It wasn't so much a criticism as just something I noticed and stood out as odd mainly because I didn't expect it and had watched his video not long back. Your video and his then build on those points and go down very different directions anyway, so it's definitely not a copy. Most people probably wouldn't even notice, and the vast majority of the similarity could probably be eliminated just through the use of a thesaurus and restructuring some of your sentences (rearranging clauses, etc). By that I mean that the statements themselves are either facts or opinions widely held by the fanbase; pretty much any video or article discussing Dark Dawn (outside of clickbait) is going to bring up those points, so any similarity in the writing (outside of straight plagiairism, which is not the case here) is going to be a purely stylistic one.

It had been 15+years plus since I played it. So many memories and good times. I really hope they remake it. I also found The Lost Age cartridge and it works still 🙌🏾
The best way for a new team from Camelot to bring back Golden Sun is to do a remaster of the first 2 parts. That will give them the much needed insight to take things forward.
I always enjoy hearing about GS, and I appreciate the research and work that obviously went in to this passion project, but I have to say your script needed a lot more editing.
While they are all in the dark felix is struggling in the abyss and waves of time to save them alone solving the problem of alternate time line and moving on working with the new adepts. Is what i want to think since it would be cool and i want to see more of felix crew in action. Since most of the time felix and isaac has different views on how they solve things. Like in anime felix would be hachiman and isaac will be the blonde good guy.
You may have missed it but there is an official promotional manga for dark dawn. It is only one chapter depicting the event of the tutorial section of the game.
I love this video. Seriously man- the effort, care and love you put in this project is marvelous. It's without a doubt the best analys this franchise got so far. I really really really hope there will be future installments of this sunken ship. DD was a complete failure imo. I think they should remake only the third game and change the story, world and characters to match with the previous games again.
I jailbroke my new 3DS specifically to play The Lost age via virtual console. First time I was actually able to play it since the cartridge copy on my original DS. I find it amazing that the Lost age was on a 16 megabyte, yes megabyte, which I guess was a restriction because as you get close to the end of the game the world just seems like it's getting more and more sparse. Imagine if they actually had a larger cartridge to work with.
I don't understand why Nintendo dpesn't work on a new Golden Sun game, or at least a remaster . . . I would prefer a hundred times Golden Sun games before Yoshi, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Mario Tennis, Arms, and Fire Emblem (not that any of them are bad, just that Golden Sun is amazing)....
I'm doing a Final Fantasy Retrospective as that started before this one-off was made. In terms of other retrospectives, there are other possibilities in the future! :)
I'd be happy with just a remaster or port of the games to the Switch.

This was such a great video. I really hope your channel grows so you can make more content.
Awesome, well written, and very well narrated. You just got a sub!
History of a masterpiece
I always enjoy hearing about GS, and I appreciate the research and work that obviously went in to this passion project, but I have to say your script needed a lot more editing.
wow didnt think i would watch the whole video. great work
WHAT? do my eyes deceive me?!?! 2+ hours??? about Golden Sun???? GOD YES! * grabs popcorn *
I cant Belive they actually made a part 3 I was so mad at the ending for part 2 i never even heard they came out with dark dawn
Thank you for this video!
HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL AND THE GOLDEN SUN WILL RISE AGAIN SOME DAY ☀️☀️☀️☀️🌞🌞🌞🌞
You may have missed it but there is an official promotional manga for dark dawn. It is only one chapter depicting the event of the tutorial section of the game.
Fantastically well done video! Subscribed!
Great video man super informative im subscribing
This script reads like it was written by a robot or an alien lol
It needed an editor pass for sure. Love the enthusiasm though.
Golden Sun is coming to the Nintendo Switch Online. I think it will only be the first game. I recently bought all 3 games physically lol.
Woah, 2 hours. This is gonna be great
Beyond the Beyond is really cool.
Man I love this game
I jailbroke my new 3DS specifically to play The Lost age via virtual console. First time I was actually able to play it since the cartridge copy on my original DS.
I find it amazing that the Lost age was on a 16 megabyte, yes megabyte, which I guess was a restriction because as you get close to the end of the game the world just seems like it's getting more and more sparse. Imagine if they actually had a larger cartridge to work with.
Hear me out, Golden Sun 4, in the style of the Links awakening remake, I think the visual appeal alone would draw people in!
No
Yes
I don't understand why Nintendo dpesn't work on a new Golden Sun game, or at least a remaster . . . I would prefer a hundred times Golden Sun games before Yoshi, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Mario Tennis, Arms, and Fire Emblem (not that any of them are bad, just that Golden Sun is amazing)....
Your pronunciation is legitimately sending me into complete rage
Not everyone is going to pronounce everything with what you want certain words to sound like, so your rage is completely unnecessary.
Really detailed. well done! make more pls
I'm doing a Final Fantasy Retrospective as that started before this one-off was made. In terms of other retrospectives, there are other possibilities in the future! :)
Fun fact, lemuria is the name for a proposed (and debunked) lost continent in the Indian Ocean, populated by a truly strange people.
