Secondly, no we weren't there for copper or any belongings, we were just there to explore. The Frederick Towne Mall at that point was mostly just broken objects everywhere from vandals and jerks and trash from places. We definitely weren't the only ones going in. 2 of the 3 of us had grown up in that Mall and just like the TH-camrs today we were seeking out to make a video of our own. Unfortunately we didn't really think of any reprecussions, just had a blast seeing our childhood home one more time as the Wal*Mart announcement was rumored to be happening. If interested, I have the full story of that night as well as video we shot of us just dicking around and having a blast in our old stomping grounds just like we would have if we were still kids. Fredrick Towne Mall looks like South Dekalb Mall in Atlanta. Only a few eateries and a movie theater are still there, and the Covid-19 panic is killing that off.
I live a short walk away from there and I used to go there as a kid, I remember playing at the arcade, eating at the long john silver, seeing, and watching movies with my mom, now is just depressing for me. And The Francis Scott Key mall isn't looking too hot either.

Those synapses have not fired in 25-35, 40 years, Thanks John Spade! Excellent work. For well over a decade Frederick Towne Mall (FTM) was the Center of our World for years. We saw Star Wars there. Taught myself BASIC on a Radio Shack's TRS-80, got big on Pappy's Pepperoni Pizza & Root Beer (Pitchers), Annual Sneakers from Chanticleer Shoes, LEVI's (Dungarees and matching Jacket) from that clothing store near the Friendly's, Ice Cream Store (I preferred the ICE cream from the Soft Pretzel place), Free samples at Hickory Farms. Long John Silvers was the first place to offer Boneless White Meat Chicken Strips.The toy store was price prohibitive and too low tech (my Atari came form K Mart.) MY Sister got her "Lion's Letter Jacket" as did every Field Hockey to Football Frederick County Freshman Girl & Guy's did (Jocks!). Several Schools of Freshwater Fish, Cecil the 6 inch Boa constrictor (grew to 8 feet and was adopted by the National Zoo when I went off to war). Some other small furry creatures and our Toy Poodle all came from Drs. Pet Center. If you wanted to get rid of your kids for the weekend, well at least for all of Saturday. The biggest danger at the time at the FTM was attempting to take down the reigning title holder and still un-defeated Time Out's TIC-TAC-TOE Champion Chicken (LIVE). Need a break from reality and the KIDS? This is where our Parents were ditched, it was the safest place to drop your kids off for the day before dropping them off at Skate Haven for the night. Absolutely fascinating!
I just checked the Francis Scott Key Mall on google maps they have an indoor view of the mall looks like that mall is still doing at least ok. I did not see many vacant stores.

I remember watching this with my mom and grandma who lived in Fredrick, but we moved a few years before it closed down.. good memories but sad seeing my mom seeing her old mall and grandmas.. thank you for showing the past for us all.
Francis Scott Key Mall also had a Hoyts now it's shadowland and a restaurant now it was a 3 screen movie theater I took my exs there and I went to all of the Hoyt's in Frederick Maryland.
5:19 Kind of random, but I know exactly how that wooden plank got there. Before I snuck in, my dad’s friend got inside by carefully removing the glass on the door, but when he tried to put it back in, the glass broke. Now you know why a piece of wood is in an abandoned shopping mall.

I would have to disagree with the notion that this mall had no attachment to people; at least it does for me. This was my childhood mall and I have so many memories of going here. It was closer than Francis Scott Key and it was the only place to get Long John's Silvers in the area. We would drive the 20 minutes from my house just to get some! They had an amazing space that served boardwalk style fries for a while in the late 90's and I frequented the arcade while it was here, which I believe was called Pocket Change. Although that was also the name of the Francis Scott Key arcade too. I remember in my late teens lining up outside of Hoyts Cinemas to watch the midnight showing of the first Spider-Man film and the release day showings for Rush Hour and The Incredibles. In the late 90's again, I would eat at the Friendly's then walk into the Kaybee Toys next door to buy Transformers, well to have my mom buy Transformers. There was a tiny pretzel place at the far end where Boscov's where we would never leave the mall without getting an order of pretzels and cheese. My parents would always get their watch batteries replaced at the watch store that was next to the Hair Cuttery and I remember watching a cousin of mine perform in a school concert right there on the stage in front of the Boscov's. The Montgomery Wards was were my parents bought their first Big Screen Tube TV and the first place I played an Nintendo 64 Demo Kiosk. I will always remember Mario thanking me for playing and ask who was next :) I have so many memories of this place and its so surreal to see a channel I follow take the time to produce such an informative video on it. Just seeing the footage gives me goosebumps as I recognize all the storefronts and even the tile floor where I would carefully hop on individual colors playing the "floor is lava" game. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories to me!
Being a millennial who grew up in Frederick, I frequented this mall in its waning years. It had a certain charm to it right up to the day the interior between the anchor stores was closed up. I was honestly surprised to see you cover this, pleasantly surprised.

i live around 3 minutes from here and passing by it every day and going there as a kid just makes it more and more surreal. i remember i was around like 11 or so when it closed for good and seeing it so vacant just blew my mind at the time and still does to this day
America, like Canada is facing a housing crisis, being that there's too much demand and not enough supply of available homes. I think all these malls offer immense redevelopment opportunities to transform empty spaces and rotting parking lots into mixed used neighbourhoods that could bring new people, money, and life into down-in-the-dumps areas.
Harrison William Thorburn that’s funny, because in Connecticut we have too many houses and not enough people. Like we have such high taxes that people are leaving, or moving into smaller houses. Our schools are made for a larger group of people, but we have so few kids compared to older years.
Like the 2 comments above imply, I think you might have a gossly oversimplified view of economics & real estate development. It is not as simple as building "just beacuse". For example, China have both ghost cities & homelessness epidemic... at the same time... in the same regions. Sometimes, like in Vacouver, it is result of perverse incentives. Local goverments recive huge tax benefits for the high prices of artificial monopolies. The local goverment have only to ensure to restric the supply as much a possible. -

Hey Jake, I was wondering if you would be interested in the amusement park "Pixieland". It was a park located next to the highway when entering Lincoln City in Oregon. My parents went when they were kids and it seems the park has some interesting history behind it. Apparently, the park was only open for about 5 years or so starting in 1969 and closing in 1975. It's been sitting dormant for years and they have sold parts to other parks like Lagoon in Utah. Great video as always
Thank you for this, didn't realize anyone cared about this old Mall anymore. Went here a ton back in the 90s, everythign was pretty accurate that you posted, but we all new it was going to die by 2000. This was a place of many, many childhood memories. I won a Pinwood derby years ago here, had many family visits and other activities. The whole area had crime issues that was the eventual reason my family moved to somewhere nicer in Frederick County.
But, my point to this is that there is someone that cares! Seeing these videos broke my heart just a bit, it used to be a good place, but it fell victim to crime and went downhill.

I have watched your Abandoned series for a while now and today I decided to check your channel for new uploads and I was so happily surprised to see this video! I was born in Frederick, my mom was born in Frederick, her mother we born in Frederick, etc. and although I only spent a few years going to this mall, I have very fond memories of playing "Don't Step on the White Tiles" with my sisters and cousins (for people who live in Frederick and has been to Frederick Towne Mall, does anyone remember the animatronic singing bears that they would set up at Christmas that were on like a stage and would sing Christmas songs? I remember it being an annual thing that I would beg my mom to go see multiple times every year lol). My mother always tells us stories about growing up as a teenager in that mall; I just showed the video and it made her very happy to see all of the pictures of the inside. Her mother, my Nana worked in the McCroy shown at 2:03. I'm rambling, but it's so cool to see you talk about my town! I never knew about the lights being on inside, but that's so awesome and my sister wants to explore the mall sometime soon :)

God I've lived in Frederick all of my life and never knew about the history of this mall. I literally live less than 10 minutes away and literally pass it almost every day.
This is kinda depressing. This is the first video you've done, and that I've seen, of a place I actually went to and remember. I live near Frederick, and visited this mall regularly. I had no idea about the crime, I thought it was a nice mall. The last time I was there was in 2009, and I thought it looked rundown, but that's how a lot of retailers look in this area. I had no idea of the financial problems it was having. Makes me worry about the mall closest to me - the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, MD - as it is starting to decline too, having just lost its Sears, and Bon-Ton closing soon. Anyway, thanks for the video, and for the objective look at the history of this place 👍

A fair amount of my childhood was spent here, watching Ice Age in the theater with my best friend and tagging along my mom as she did her Christmas shopping there. So bizarre.
I love these videos about abandoned malls and retail giants. I was watching real estate class videos and they talked about how real estate market crashes and cycles and you can always tell that there will be a real estate crash when giant malls are being built rapidly. I think it's crazy that we were building so many malls in the late 70s but the market didn't crash for awhile. Very interesting.

These videos are the best. I lived in Frederick from 2001-2003. The FTM was such a wonderful place to hang out with my new daughter. I have a Santa pic with her and him when she was both 1 and 2 years old. The Long John Silvers the best and the staff became friends. The Chinese restaurant was the only spot I have found that had peanut butter chicken. When I moved back to Ohio I only found one place that could make it special for me when I came in. I was an employee at Waldenbooks at FSK Mall and then went over to FTM to be an assistant manager there. I brought to life their bargain books section which had huge tables in the Mall hallway. Major area of sales for us, thank you very much. Great candy/cigar store on the Montgomery Ward end too. Some guy also opened a comic book store too. Music store (bought the horrible Powerman 5000 CD there), collectibles, a bank, Halloween store during October, Italian spot run by Mexicans, the theatre and really cheap shows, the arcade where I mastered the South Park pinball game, so many good memories. I, in no shape or form, saw or heard of any crime there?? Weird it had that reputation...oh, and the hair cutting place by Wards had this super skilled older man that shook (which freaked me out at the time getting a hair cut) but as soon as he started cutting your hair, he was like steel and did the most amazing job. Like was mentioned, the Xmas display was the best!
We lived in the nearby Baltimore suburbs, and would take treks to "Fredneck" every once in a while. This mall started getting really creepy in the early 2000s. Can't say any more without getting my comment deleted, lol.
This just kinda makes me sad. I used to work in this mall when I was a teenager and they're some of the best memories of my childhood. The subway back in the late 90s back when the mall and that side of town was still kinda thriving.

Briefly, yes. Didn;t cover how or why Zellers got to the point of getting bought out and run into the ground. Same with Hills and Zayre, other brands that declined, merged, and flopped (both taken out by Ames). Zayre is interesting as they founded TJ Maxx and ultimatly split off moved their main capital to it, which left the original Zayre as the actual spinoff which was soon bought by Ames.
I've been binge watching this channel (love it), but it wasn't until my second viewing of this one and a quick investigation on Google Maps that I realized that I'd totally been in that Home Depot probably about a dozen times.
My parents used to take me to this mall in the late 90s-2000. I remember it really fondly because of this restaurant called Ground Round, where on the kid's menu there was something called a Smiley Face Pizza. I thought this was the best pizza I ever tasted as a kid. Seeing this video makes me miss having that pizza.
This is really the oddest thing to come across! After living in Maryland for 11 years, The oldest memories I have of this mall was Bon-Ton’s closure, an old arcade machine and the Hallmark; I had no idea the Hallmark closed down, and I’m honestly surprised Boscov’s is still around! I also kinda-sorta remember this store that sold various luggage for travelling...
Those sorts of signs are when you know that the mall is dead and buried. Those are extremely tacky, and a healthy mall would *never* post something like that.

I'd love to see you do an episode on Martinsburg Mall (Martinsburg, WV). It's got an interesting history having been built between two other malls in other states on I-81 and the way it transitioned to a shopping center by tearing down the abandoned "mall" part of the structure but keeping the anchor stores. The present day Foxcroft Towne Center remains oddly designed as a result of this.
The Gwinett place mall in Lilburn Georiga is getting to this point! They even found a dead woman in one of the closed resturants so the food court has no tendants and there are only a few stores open. It is soooo creepy
Just moved to the area. Been super curious about this mall and the inside of it. It’s 4 mins from my house. Just this past Friday I noticed on the back mall entrance some had smashed the glass. That night I just poked my head in and looked around. The next morning after losing some sleep went back went inside but not all the way. Played the little piano in the middle and rolled out. It’s a crazy place to be alone. This morning still extremely curious about the rest of the place finally walked the whole thing. It’s definitely worse now than the most recent videos I could from 6 years ago. A lot of debris from the construction of them adding a bowling ally and pinball arcade to the old bon ton. That whole middle area of the main stretch was a big pile of stuff. The blue neon room was exactly the same.

Ah, I remember hanging out in this place in my highschool days in the early 2000s. Great to see the Long John Silvers really was unchanged from the first day this place opened, as we had suspected. I spent so, so many quarters in the arcade. I went back a few years after it had mostly died, the only store that I remember being open was the Hallmark store, it was very surreal.
As someone said 8 months ago, Warehouse Cinema moved in during the pandemic and is doing well. As well as Home Depot. The rest of the building is still just sitting there and I'd love to see what it's like inside now.
A friend of mine just shared this video with me. I used to work at the Hoytes (which was technically called the Frederick Towne Mall Cinemas) back when I was in high school. I remember quitting the day before the place was robbed at knife-point; that was quite a shock to hear, especially since I would have been working that day if I hadn't. I was also one of the people making rounds to stop the Wal-Mart from going up there (I didn't start the petition, but I was roommates with the person who did), and these days I live within walking distance of what's left. It's still kind of surreal, but it looks like some things may be going there soon.
I went here recently and here are my findings: - boarded up but can enter from rear - someone was killed in the movie theatre but all rooms in there are empty - some new leases are opening on the front - a bit more security

This reminds me of the University mall here in Tampa. It was really nice in the early 2000’s but slowly went down hill and there’s few stores there now and people are afraid to shop there because their car might get hijacked
I have a nearby mall named "Westfield Oakridge" and it's been open since 1971 and still operating. With probably hundreds or thousands of people going there each day.

+Wizard Hoovy it also is a tourist attraction which sets it apart from almost every other mall out there. I visited there just because I was in the area and the only reason I went is because it was the mall of America so I don't think you can really compare it to other malls, especially ones that don't have the same caliber stores/restaurants and aren't in areas with lots of people.
because it's not just a mall, it's an INDOOR YEAR ROUND CONSTANT TEMPERATURE THEME PARK, no baking in 90+ degree heat of Disney World summers and no worry of how cold it is outside limiting the times of year you can go (provided roads are passable).
I live really close and I’ve been getting into urbex, I wanted to go here because I saw the old entrance was there and know people that used to go to it but I found out it now has alarms at the entrances but heard there were TH-cam videos of the inside so I’m glad to be finding some wish I could go inside

Also, the last time I went on it was in September 2016, and it didn't seem to be in the best condition. I also noticed that the Ellen animatronic wasn't there. I'm pretty sure they covered it up with rocks or something.
I’m from Frederick Maryland and I spent a lot of time on the golden mile and at that mall. I have a lot of memories growing up there. My family went to Montgomery Wards one Christmas shopping season. Saw the Lord of the Rings series at the movie theater with my dad. I remember getting my hair cut there as a teen (I miss my teenage hair). At at the Long John Silvers, bought books at the Walden books, bought photo equipment at Wolfs. Had a lot of good stores in the 90’s but slowly died. In the early 2000’s there was only a few things still open. A high school classmate of mine was jumped, robbed and beaten by a gang outside the movie theater. That’s when I stopped making the trip there. Francis Scott Key Mall had everything but the movie theater (it did at one time but only had 3 screens). I remember the last movie I saw there was No Country For Old Men. I never heard about the murder but doesn’t surprise me. The area went to shit and a lot of low income housing is partly to blame.
You should check out the Burlington Center in Burlington NJ. It recently became abandoned and has an interesting history of gang violence and such and there's been so many plans to try to save it over the years that always fell threw.
It is sad to see these malls close. All the memories and nostalgia over the years. I hope the malls I grew up with never go under. But I guess everything eventually comes to an end.
So frickin' awesome! I'm from Frederick and remember Frederick Towne Mall and the golden mile! I grew just 5 miles from there and can't believe how bad it has gotten! One thing that isn't said much is the flooding problem in the back side near hoyts cinema entrance. However FSK Mall was the mall to be added so that rang the death toll for this mall.
We actually have an abandoned outdoor mall in a city just south of me. It's on the outer edge of downtown. It used to be HUGE and thriving and it was actually taking attention away from the two main malls in the center of downtown. After a while the two malls in downtown closed completely. A few years passed during which time the outdoor mall continued to thrive. But a few years ago the two downtown malls were completely revamped and merged into one big new mall. And ever since the outdoor mall has been slowly dying. Just last year one of the anchor tenants, a Dick's Sporting Goods, closed. Now there is only one place left to eat there, a Panda Express. Also if you don't want to eat there, there are food trucks that come through every day.
This is so cool. I drive by that mall all the time when I go to Frederick, had no idea that huge abandoned looking building off the Golden mile was it. The interior reminds me of the backrooms. Maybe I should go explore it one day lol
wow, did not expect this one. i used to go to this mall alot when i was a kid and my Grandmother worked in a few stores (including the Boscov's). i remember those last few years as stores began leaving, more and more empty spaces. i live in Hagerstown and shop at the Valley Mall more now, but i used to live in the Frederick area growing up. since this video is going on 3 years old. Boscov's and Home Depot are still the only businesses left as of Jan. 2020 (last time i went to Frederick). nothing has been done to the main building yet. in 2019 it was dubbed "District 40" and is to become an entertainment center including a movie theater.
Warehouse Cinemas occupies the old Hoyts Cinema space so it’s basically Hoyts spiritual successor or even rebirthed version. In fact the whole east wing of the old mall where Home Depot anchors is Warehouse Cinemas so you can definitely feel the vibes of the old mall as you walk through

You might also like Maryland’s north point state park, on the site of an abandoned amusement park. A dilapidated pier and power station are easily viewable from trails
Oh wow, they dying mall by me was just bought by a company from Florida too! I keep saying the mall will be abandoned soon, but hopefully this turns it around.

Taught myself BASIC on a Radio Shack's TRS-80, got big on Pappy's Pepperoni Pizza & Root Beer (Pitchers), Annual Sneakers from Chanticleer Shoes, LEVI's (Dungarees and matching Jacket) from that clothing store near the Friendly's, Ice Cream Store (I preferred the ICE cream from the Soft Pretzel place), Free samples at Hickory Farms. Long John Silvers was the first place to offer Boneless White Meat Chicken Strips.The toy store was price prohibitive and too low tech (my Atari came form K Mart.) MY Sister got her "Lion's Letter Jacket" as did every Field Hockey to Football Frederick County Freshman Girl & Guy's did (Jocks!). Several Schools of Freshwater Fish, Cecil the 6 inch Boa constrictor (grew to 8 feet and was adopted by the National Zoo when I went off to war). Some other small furry creatures and our Toy Poodle all came from Drs. Pet Center. If you wanted to get rid of your kids for the weekend, well at least for all of Saturday. The biggest danger at the time at the FTM was attempting to take down the reigning title holder and still un-defeated Time Out's TIC-TAC-TOE Champion Chicken (LIVE). Need a break from reality and the KIDS? This is where our Parents were ditched, it was the safest place to drop your kids off for the day before dropping them off at Skate Haven for the night. Absolutely fascinating!

I just checked the Francis Scott Key Mall on google maps they have an indoor view of the mall looks like that mall is still doing at least ok. I did not see many vacant stores.

I remember watching this with my mom and grandma who lived in Fredrick, but we moved a few years before it closed down.. good memories but sad seeing my mom seeing her old mall and grandmas.. thank you for showing the past for us all.
Leaving the lights on in these places is an insane waste of energy.

For a short period before they closed this mall it was the place to hang out... That and the ice skating rink. FSK was always better though.
Francis Scott Key Mall also had a Hoyts now it's shadowland and a restaurant now it was a 3 screen movie theater I took my exs there and I went to all of the Hoyt's in Frederick Maryland.
I used to go there all the time in the 90's as a teenager. no idea it was dangerous.

Grew up across the river in Sterling, VA. Mom used to take me there as a kid in the mid-90's. I never felt threatened or scared. It was just a mall.

I would have to disagree with the notion that this mall had no attachment to people; at least it does for me. This was my childhood mall and I have so many memories of going here. It was closer than Francis Scott Key and it was the only place to get Long John's Silvers in the area. We would drive the 20 minutes from my house just to get some! They had an amazing space that served boardwalk style fries for a while in the late 90's and I frequented the arcade while it was here, which I believe was called Pocket Change. Although that was also the name of the Francis Scott Key arcade too. I remember in my late teens lining up outside of Hoyts Cinemas to watch the midnight showing of the first Spider-Man film and the release day showings for Rush Hour and The Incredibles. In the late 90's again, I would eat at the Friendly's then walk into the Kaybee Toys next door to buy Transformers, well to have my mom buy Transformers. There was a tiny pretzel place at the far end where Boscov's where we would never leave the mall without getting an order of pretzels and cheese. My parents would always get their watch batteries replaced at the watch store that was next to the Hair Cuttery and I remember watching a cousin of mine perform in a school concert right there on the stage in front of the Boscov's. The Montgomery Wards was were my parents bought their first Big Screen Tube TV and the first place I played an Nintendo 64 Demo Kiosk. I will always remember Mario thanking me for playing and ask who was next :)
I have so many memories of this place and its so surreal to see a channel I follow take the time to produce such an informative video on it. Just seeing the footage gives me goosebumps as I recognize all the storefronts and even the tile floor where I would carefully hop on individual colors playing the "floor is lava" game. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories to me!

Being a millennial who grew up in Frederick, I frequented this mall in its waning years. It had a certain charm to it right up to the day the interior between the anchor stores was closed up. I was honestly surprised to see you cover this, pleasantly surprised.
Its cool to see our local mall on your channel. The biggest loss when it closed for me was Long John Silvers... i miss that place.

I think all these malls offer immense redevelopment opportunities to transform empty spaces and rotting parking lots into mixed used neighbourhoods that could bring new people, money, and life into down-in-the-dumps areas.

It is not as simple as building "just beacuse". For example, China have both ghost cities & homelessness epidemic... at the same time... in the same regions.
Sometimes, like in Vacouver, it is result of perverse incentives. Local goverments recive huge tax benefits for the high prices of artificial monopolies. The local goverment have only to ensure to restric the supply as much a possible.

Hey Jake, I was wondering if you would be interested in the amusement park "Pixieland". It was a park located next to the highway when entering Lincoln City in Oregon. My parents went when they were kids and it seems the park has some interesting history behind it. Apparently, the park was only open for about 5 years or so starting in 1969 and closing in 1975. It's been sitting dormant for years and they have sold parts to other parks like Lagoon in Utah.

Thank you for this, didn't realize anyone cared about this old Mall anymore. Went here a ton back in the 90s, everythign was pretty accurate that you posted, but we all new it was going to die by 2000. This was a place of many, many childhood memories. I won a Pinwood derby years ago here, had many family visits and other activities. The whole area had crime issues that was the eventual reason my family moved to somewhere nicer in Frederick County.
But, my point to this is that there is someone that cares! Seeing these videos broke my heart just a bit, it used to be a good place, but it fell victim to crime and went downhill.
Nice to know that the remaining anchor stores aren’t warehouses.

I have watched your Abandoned series for a while now and today I decided to check your channel for new uploads and I was so happily surprised to see this video! I was born in Frederick, my mom was born in Frederick, her mother we born in Frederick, etc. and although I only spent a few years going to this mall, I have very fond memories of playing "Don't Step on the White Tiles" with my sisters and cousins (for people who live in Frederick and has been to Frederick Towne Mall, does anyone remember the animatronic singing bears that they would set up at Christmas that were on like a stage and would sing Christmas songs? I remember it being an annual thing that I would beg my mom to go see multiple times every year lol). My mother always tells us stories about growing up as a teenager in that mall; I just showed the video and it made her very happy to see all of the pictures of the inside. Her mother, my Nana worked in the McCroy shown at 2:03. I'm rambling, but it's so cool to see you talk about my town! I never knew about the lights being on inside, but that's so awesome and my sister wants to explore the mall sometime soon :)
That area makes me sad now because I grew up not far from there. Will use a laugh at the thought of gangs being in that area and now they are.

This is kinda depressing. This is the first video you've done, and that I've seen, of a place I actually went to and remember. I live near Frederick, and visited this mall regularly. I had no idea about the crime, I thought it was a nice mall. The last time I was there was in 2009, and I thought it looked rundown, but that's how a lot of retailers look in this area. I had no idea of the financial problems it was having. Makes me worry about the mall closest to me - the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, MD - as it is starting to decline too, having just lost its Sears, and Bon-Ton closing soon. Anyway, thanks for the video, and for the objective look at the history of this place 👍

Never knew about this place, but with my mom growing up in the town right over during the 70s and 80s, this definitely was somewhere she probably went. . .
A fair amount of my childhood was spent here, watching Ice Age in the theater with my best friend and tagging along my mom as she did her Christmas shopping there.

I was watching real estate class videos and they talked about how real estate market crashes and cycles and you can always tell that there will be a real estate crash when giant malls are being built rapidly. I think it's crazy that we were building so many malls in the late 70s but the market didn't crash for awhile. Very interesting.

These videos are the best. I lived in Frederick from 2001-2003. The FTM was such a wonderful place to hang out with my new daughter. I have a Santa pic with her and him when she was both 1 and 2 years old. The Long John Silvers the best and the staff became friends. The Chinese restaurant was the only spot I have found that had peanut butter chicken. When I moved back to Ohio I only found one place that could make it special for me when I came in. I was an employee at Waldenbooks at FSK Mall and then went over to FTM to be an assistant manager there. I brought to life their bargain books section which had huge tables in the Mall hallway. Major area of sales for us, thank you very much. Great candy/cigar store on the Montgomery Ward end too. Some guy also opened a comic book store too. Music store (bought the horrible Powerman 5000 CD there), collectibles, a bank, Halloween store during October, Italian spot run by Mexicans, the theatre and really cheap shows, the arcade where I mastered the South Park pinball game, so many good memories. I, in no shape or form, saw or heard of any crime there?? Weird it had that reputation...oh, and the hair cutting place by Wards had this super skilled older man that shook (which freaked me out at the time getting a hair cut) but as soon as he started cutting your hair, he was like steel and did the most amazing job. Like was mentioned, the Xmas display was the best!
We lived in the nearby Baltimore suburbs, and would take treks to "Fredneck" every once in a while. This mall started getting really creepy in the early 2000s. Can't say any more without getting my comment deleted, lol.
This just kinda makes me sad. I used to work in this mall when I was a teenager and they're some of the best memories of my childhood. The subway back in the late 90s back when the mall and that side of town was still kinda thriving.

Briefly, yes. Didn;t cover how or why Zellers got to the point of getting bought out and run into the ground. Same with Hills and Zayre, other brands that declined, merged, and flopped (both taken out by Ames). Zayre is interesting as they founded TJ Maxx and ultimatly split off moved their main capital to it, which left the original Zayre as the actual spinoff which was soon bought by Ames.

I've been binge watching this channel (love it), but it wasn't until my second viewing of this one and a quick investigation on Google Maps that I realized that I'd totally been in that Home Depot probably about a dozen times.
My parents used to take me to this mall in the late 90s-2000. I remember it really fondly because of this restaurant called Ground Round, where on the kid's menu there was something called a Smiley Face Pizza. I thought this was the best pizza I ever tasted as a kid. Seeing this video makes me miss having that pizza.

After living in Maryland for 11 years, The oldest memories I have of this mall was Bon-Ton’s closure, an old arcade machine and the Hallmark; I had no idea the Hallmark closed down, and I’m honestly surprised Boscov’s is still around! I also kinda-sorta remember this store that sold various luggage for travelling...

I'd love to see you do an episode on Martinsburg Mall (Martinsburg, WV). It's got an interesting history having been built between two other malls in other states on I-81 and the way it transitioned to a shopping center by tearing down the abandoned "mall" part of the structure but keeping the anchor stores. The present day Foxcroft Towne Center remains oddly designed as a result of this.
The Gwinett place mall in Lilburn Georiga is getting to this point! They even found a dead woman in one of the closed resturants so the food court has no tendants and there are only a few stores open. It is soooo creepy
Just moved to the area. Been super curious about this mall and the inside of it. It’s 4 mins from my house. Just this past Friday I noticed on the back mall entrance some had smashed the glass. That night I just poked my head in and looked around. The next morning after losing some sleep went back went inside but not all the way. Played the little piano in the middle and rolled out. It’s a crazy place to be alone. This morning still extremely curious about the rest of the place finally walked the whole thing. It’s definitely worse now than the most recent videos I could from 6 years ago. A lot of debris from the construction of them adding a bowling ally and pinball arcade to the old bon ton. That whole middle area of the main stretch was a big pile of stuff. The blue neon room was exactly the same.

Ah, I remember hanging out in this place in my highschool days in the early 2000s. Great to see the Long John Silvers really was unchanged from the first day this place opened, as we had suspected. I spent so, so many quarters in the arcade.
I went back a few years after it had mostly died, the only store that I remember being open was the Hallmark store, it was very surreal.
I may have been there when I was little. Definitely have been to FSK Mall though. Had a really awkward first date there in 2006.

As someone said 8 months ago, Warehouse Cinema moved in during the pandemic and is doing well. As well as Home Depot. The rest of the building is still just sitting there and I'd love to see what it's like inside now.
The new warehouse movie theater they added to the mall last year is very nice. Hopefully they add outdoor stores or something.
A friend of mine just shared this video with me. I used to work at the Hoytes (which was technically called the Frederick Towne Mall Cinemas) back when I was in high school. I remember quitting the day before the place was robbed at knife-point; that was quite a shock to hear, especially since I would have been working that day if I hadn't. I was also one of the people making rounds to stop the Wal-Mart from going up there (I didn't start the petition, but I was roommates with the person who did), and these days I live within walking distance of what's left. It's still kind of surreal, but it looks like some things may be going there soon.
It's odd seeing indoor shots of this abandoned mall when I was in it a few years ago...
I went here recently and here are my findings:
- boarded up but can enter from rear
- someone was killed in the movie theatre but all rooms in there are empty
- some new leases are opening on the front
- a bit more security

This reminds me of the University mall here in Tampa. It was really nice in the early 2000’s but slowly went down hill and there’s few stores there now and people are afraid to shop there because their car might get hijacked

I have a nearby mall named "Westfield Oakridge" and it's been open since 1971 and still operating. With probably hundreds or thousands of people going there each day.

+Wizard Hoovy it also is a tourist attraction which sets it apart from almost every other mall out there. I visited there just because I was in the area and the only reason I went is because it was the mall of America so I don't think you can really compare it to other malls, especially ones that don't have the same caliber stores/restaurants and aren't in areas with lots of people.
I probably spent about $100,000 at Mall of America since it opened lol.
because it's not just a mall, it's an INDOOR YEAR ROUND CONSTANT TEMPERATURE THEME PARK, no baking in 90+ degree heat of Disney World summers and no worry of how cold it is outside limiting the times of year you can go (provided roads are passable).

I live really close and I’ve been getting into urbex, I wanted to go here because I saw the old entrance was there and know people that used to go to it but I found out it now has alarms at the entrances but heard there were TH-cam videos of the inside so I’m glad to be finding some wish I could go inside

Saw the Lord of the Rings series at the movie theater with my dad. I remember getting my hair cut there as a teen (I miss my teenage hair). At at the Long John Silvers, bought books at the Walden books, bought photo equipment at Wolfs. Had a lot of good stores in the 90’s but slowly died. In the early 2000’s there was only a few things still open. A high school classmate of mine was jumped, robbed and beaten by a gang outside the movie theater. That’s when I stopped making the trip there. Francis Scott Key Mall had everything but the movie theater (it did at one time but only had 3 screens). I remember the last movie I saw there was No Country For Old Men. I never heard about the murder but doesn’t surprise me. The area went to shit and a lot of low income housing is partly to blame.
You should check out the Burlington Center in Burlington NJ. It recently became abandoned and has an interesting history of gang violence and such and there's been so many plans to try to save it over the years that always fell threw.
It is sad to see these malls close. All the memories and nostalgia over the years. I hope the malls I grew up with never go under. But I guess everything eventually comes to an end.
So frickin' awesome! I'm from Frederick and remember Frederick Towne Mall and the golden mile! I grew just 5 miles from there and can't believe how bad it has gotten! One thing that isn't said much is the flooding problem in the back side near hoyts cinema entrance. However FSK Mall was the mall to be added so that rang the death toll for this mall.
But everything else on The Golden Mile seems to be bustling. They all just agree they hate that mall.

We actually have an abandoned outdoor mall in a city just south of me. It's on the outer edge of downtown. It used to be HUGE and thriving and it was actually taking attention away from the two main malls in the center of downtown. After a while the two malls in downtown closed completely. A few years passed during which time the outdoor mall continued to thrive. But a few years ago the two downtown malls were completely revamped and merged into one big new mall. And ever since the outdoor mall has been slowly dying. Just last year one of the anchor tenants, a Dick's Sporting Goods, closed. Now there is only one place left to eat there, a Panda Express. Also if you don't want to eat there, there are food trucks that come through every day.
This is so cool. I drive by that mall all the time when I go to Frederick, had no idea that huge abandoned looking building off the Golden mile was it. The interior reminds me of the backrooms. Maybe I should go explore it one day lol
wow, did not expect this one. i used to go to this mall alot when i was a kid and my Grandmother worked in a few stores (including the Boscov's). i remember those last few years as stores began leaving, more and more empty spaces. i live in Hagerstown and shop at the Valley Mall more now, but i used to live in the Frederick area growing up.
since this video is going on 3 years old. Boscov's and Home Depot are still the only businesses left as of Jan. 2020 (last time i went to Frederick). nothing has been done to the main building yet. in 2019 it was dubbed "District 40" and is to become an entertainment center including a movie theater.
Warehouse Cinemas occupies the old Hoyts Cinema space so it’s basically Hoyts spiritual successor or even rebirthed version. In fact the whole east wing of the old mall where Home Depot anchors is Warehouse Cinemas so you can definitely feel the vibes of the old mall as you walk through

Oh wow, they dying mall by me was just bought by a company from Florida too! I keep saying the mall will be abandoned soon, but hopefully this turns it around.
