If you listen to the episode of the Song Exploder podcast she was on, she talks about how this song was created. This version sounds a lot more like what the first version of the song was like where it was moody and lowkey and then built until the end with the beat.
That episode was so interesting, I was thinking about it too while listening to this right now, so different from all the layers of production they put in the album version, both astoundingly beautiful!
not to write an essay but i love the horns in song as well as in this performance specifically, she's mentioned before that she wanted them to sound triumphant and i really think they nailed that in this performance, especially since they're almost mellow and not as powerful as maybe the studio version

They endlessly drink till they're drunk, they tell each other secrets they never told to anyone and dance. The morning after, Lorde wakes up and realizes that there wasn't any boy with her last night. She was just so fed up with reality that she had imagine the best night of her life. She was being drunk and dancing all night with someone that she wanted to make her forget her ex. She lost her mind and ended spending the night with her pain.
I remember when I had my appendix surgery in August and i woke up from it and listened to the entire album. I don’t think I’ll ever cry that much I did that day from being alive and from listening to this beautiful piece of art ♥️
The way she expresses her feelings through her music is just too beautiful. It's so good to see an artist so young and so committed to her sound, I love melodrama too much.
This song makes me feel so nostalgic. I downloaded the entire Melodrama album after it came out for a long flight and Sober was the first song I listened to and made me fall in love with Lorde(I only listened to Royals, Tennis Court and Team before); I literally kept Sober on repeat for 3 hours straight on the plane before listening to the other songs in the album. I always come back and listen to this version of Sober and it makes me emotional and nostalgic and tingly; it's like listening to Lorde's version of ASMR. This version of Sober is the best because its deeper and raw and beautiful :)
Nothing makes me happier than finding a new Lorde performance. And I love Sober because it was the opening act in Melodrama, so reminds me of the thousands of screaming fans as Lorde comes on after the dancers.
