I know everyone thinks they seem so far away from each other and expressionless but I prefer it this way. I prefer a slow build up to an immediate embrace. And to me they're faces immit thoughtfulness. They're going through a lot of emotions very fast, from feelings of confusion and foolishness and finally to a sort of enlightenment. I can just imagine the feelings welling up inside of them that are fighting they're way out. After all their jumping and failing about they're finally still.
This is so enchanting! I've never seen the film, so this sent me to Hulu, & I've now watched it twice. I've purchased the DVD. I played Henry in our high school production.
The ribbon around her wrist is where El Gallo grabbed her. It symbolizes her sexual attraction to the kind of man she holds as an ideal but would never settle for. Both she and Matt go in search of what they cannot have and this song is representative of growing up for both of them, as they realise they shouldn't chase ideals too fantastic and that they have loved each other all along. It's Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending
When you're near me,Wonderful things come to be. Every secret prayer,Every fancy free,Everything I dared for both you and me. All my wildest dreams Multiplied by two They were you. They were you. They were you.
I visit my grandparents in Maryland every year, they have this guest room with a tv and a TON of movies. A very long time ago my sister and I watched this movie and I forgot about it but I recently remembered the song "try to remember" because my sister (who is a senior now) said she sang it for chorus in the elementary school. I searched all over the Internet to try to find the song and the movie but I couldn't find it. I went and watched captain America today and they played try to remember and I recognized it right away and looked up the song and I finally found it!
RANDAL JARRELL THE FAMOUS POET ALMOST CAPTURES THIS IN HIS WORK. HIS UNTIMELY DEATH LOST IT. HE CAPTURED THE MOMENT LIKE NOBODY BUT DYLAN THOMAS WHOSE BEST POEM FAREWELL 1931 WAS NEVER PUBLISHED BUT RESTS IN THE INCREDIBLE VARORIUM EDITION AT THE BEST LIBRARY IN AMERICA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS. WHY? THOMAS HAD WRITTEN DO NOT GO GENTLE BUT IN 1931 HE WROTE FAREWELL FOR IT SHOWS A HOPE UNSEEN IN DO NOT GO GENTLE ..INCREDIBLY I HAVE A COPY. TILL THE KINGDOM COME OF LIGHT AND DEATH WHEN ALL FAREWELL. HE HAD SO MANY UNPUBLISHED POEMS PRIOR TO HIS CONVERSION IN 1931 VERY ELLIPTICAL AND HARD TO FOLLOW: THE READER IS REWARDED WITH TRIUMPH AND HOPE DR. PATRICK HAWLEY SON OF THE LAKODA.
I saw this DVD for sale at Big Lots. I need to go back and get it. Have never seen this musical, but I enjoy musicals and Jean Louisa Kelly is so gorgeous!
HOLY COW! Thanks for that EXTREMELY indepth but EXTREMELY helpful comment. I am going to audition for this show and I suppose I should become more familar. This show seems so very magical...I can't wait. Thanks again, friend.
When the moon was young,When the month was May,When the stage was hung for my holiday, I saw shining lights But I never knew: They were you. They were you. They were you. When the dance was done,When I went my way, When I tried to find rainbows far away, All the lovely lights Seemed to fade from view:They were you. They were you. They were you. Without you near me,I can't see.
If ANYONE has this movie, the ENTIRE THING, could you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE post it. I've haven't seen it since I was little, and I remember liking it very much. THANK YOU.
I'll try. It was an off-Broadway production at the Sullivan Street theater in NYC's Greenwich Village. And it's spelt "Fantasticks." The late Jerry Orbach was the first El Gallo (pronounced guy-oh). It's a story of two fathers pretending to hate each other so their kids would get together. The original cast CD is still available, and I think you can pick up the story from that. Try Wiki-ing it, too. The boy and the girl were (the late) Kenneth Nelson and Rita Gardner. It's a great CD.
I agree! I've been looking for this wonderful movie up and down everywhere! The library once had it, but someone lost the copy! :'( I hope someone knows where we can watch it!
Just watched full movie and loved it! Biased though as I am smitten with Jonathon Morris (plays El Gallo). I thought he was incredibly sexy in that role, especially during the fencing scene. I loved the look and humor of the fim as well, Teller, hee hee. I am not as familiar with the staged version, so am bothered with this version at all. Everything that apparently hindered its simplicity I thought was there to accentuate the idea of smoke and mirrors and things not being what they seem.
I first heard this on one of my parents' "Reader's Digest" album sets, & it was a MAN doing the WHOLE SONG, and I thought it was sooo sweet and gentle and sexy, THEN mom played her old Ed Ames LP & he too did it solo. I was shocked years later to hear it as a duet when I finally saw the play! "A GIRL in it?!?" Still nice though...
Sure. Any time. I've been a major fan of this show ever since my mom did it at community theatre. Lorre Noto's son saw the performance and told her she was the best woman he'd ever seen play Huckleby. I know this show like the back of my hand and if you have any more questions, I will certainly be glad to help. When are the auditions? I have a copy of the script put out through Applause Musical Library and can send you the link to get a cheap copy of it. Can we start a yahoo group for this?
The simplicity of the stage musical was a LOT of its charm--even this "simplistic" film made the show too complicated--and the fully-orchestrated music does more harm than good. I would like to see it professionally filmed on-stage (with an audience?) because it is THAT production that ran off-Broadway for 42 years!!
@f0r33ha oh, Hulu is not available where i come from. but i found a copy at a dvd store. i think they had a hard time making it into a movie, thats probably why it was weird. best as a play. thanks anyway :)
Does anyone know where I could find the soundtrack for this? Or the original cast? I'm in New Zealand and I have looked everywhere, if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@Cheetahstar2 I agree. As Marshall McLuhan said, the Medium is the Message. This rendition is superior to the Nelson-Gardner verson of the original. Voices less harsh.
although the stage verision is uncomparable to the movie-- I must say that I enjoy the line read/emotion in the movie-- well atleast in this song, alot more.
The movie itself is pretty terrible especially compared to the stage version. But Matt, Luisa, and the Fathers all did awesome jobs. Not exactly a fan of this El Gallo or Henry and Mortimer
Just my opinion...the stage production used piano and harp--nothing else. Just another piece of the "simplicity" lost to the film. I DID enjoy the movie but it wasn't the same emotional experience for me.
Ok, Bruce. I admit you put me in a ziplock bag and froze STOP CORRecting me!! Isaw those fishes, sharks, screaming eagles in and other pictures you made in the sky. I'm VERT impressed. I know you are the Goldzilla of Boy Scouts and a Green Beret. I'm sure you are a general or someone reallfamiy dos dbecause I saw that fivion and you had better not be speaking for Mom and Laura. You are trying to sign my documents without my permission. Now I KNOW what you did because you told Lindie to leave before she saw what you did to me in HELL. You were RIGHT not to trust the spawn of Satan, Brad and Dad and Uncle Ikey. Thank you for letting me finish a SENT I just noticed the BITE you took out of my Apple. I guess I can only finish my sentences on my channel/ I get the message.

IMHO the beauty of the Fantasticks is that the entire set fit into that one little box. Watching it come out was magical.
R.I.P., Harvey Schmidt, composer of one of the loveliest scores in all of kingdom come. THEY WERE YOU is also an absolutely sublime song.
This is so enchanting! I've never seen the film, so this sent me to Hulu, & I've now watched it twice. I've purchased the DVD. I played Henry in our high school production.
She is a jewel of a actress, this song the quintessential love song, perfect.
A truly simple beautiful lovely song.

Omg, I never this exsisted. Loving this! Huge fan of Joey. He does this musical with such class.
wow. yes, the song is everything, but wow,, Hats off to these incredible singers.

Wistful, dreamy, romantic. Just beautiful.
So romantic and very beautiful.

I sang this as a lullaby to my children.
FYI..."The Fantasticks" is back, perhaps for another 42 years..only now it's ON Broadway at the Jerry Orbach Theatre.
I've finally checked it out from netflix. It's in my queue, so it'll be a few weeks.
Jean Louisa Kelley is such a babe! I love this woman- remember Mr. Holland's Opus?
If ANYONE has this movie, the ENTIRE THING, could you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE post it. I've haven't seen it since I was little, and I remember liking it very much. THANK YOU.

I just got this movie I think with my order of the Man of La Mancha. Nice song.

In our production we included the flute and double bass.
..beloved...they were..are...you!
yay nice song - it's Joey McIntyre! hahaha - yay - very cool!
they have the songs on myspace music from the broadway cast, i think you can buy the mp3s too so yeah :)
Netflix has it, and I'm sure you can get it on eBay. I had a copy of it once that I got from there.
they were you, they were you, they were you............
the movie was made in 1995 but due to problems with the company they delayed the release till 2000 (or maybe 2001)
Thanks!
it's the girl from Mr. Hollands Opus! I LOVE HER

Sorry on the typo. I meant "I haven't" not "I've haven't".
can somebody tell me what their names in the movie are!!
Hey! If anybody else has the rest of the movie, could you please post it? Thanks
HAHAHA, that is what I thought when i first saw this movie
where can i find a full version to download or watch online?
Does anyone know where I could find the soundtrack for this? Or the original cast? I'm in New Zealand and I have looked everywhere, if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
under rated film..the original cut was better than the 87 min version.
@Cheetahstar2
I agree. As Marshall McLuhan said, the Medium is the Message.
This rendition is superior to the Nelson-Gardner verson of the original. Voices less harsh.
I'm really not familar...what is the significance of the red ribbon?
1:37
whats the guys name?
It's Luisa & Matt.
@icedandfrozen Hulu has it for free :) But I must warn you... it kinda sucks. It gets better in Act two though-- the beginning is incredibly stupid.
i did not know they made a movie of the fantasticks it must of flopped in the theators
Joe McEntyre… say what?
although the stage verision is uncomparable to the movie-- I must say that I enjoy the line read/emotion in the movie-- well atleast in this song, alot more.
This is Live Singing!
This movie was crap, but he did a really fine job!
I think they sing without any expression
Ally Mcbeal *-*
I thought she was supposed to sing it to him??
The movie itself is pretty terrible especially compared to the stage version. But Matt, Luisa, and the Fathers all did awesome jobs.
Not exactly a fan of this El Gallo or Henry and Mortimer
This movie cuts out the best of everything from the stage version. I was very disappointed in it.
Just my opinion...the stage production used piano and harp--nothing else. Just another piece of the "simplicity" lost to the film. I DID enjoy the movie but it wasn't the same emotional experience for me.
The original Nelson -Gardner version is so much better, much more passion. Theese two sound as if they are half asleep.
"and the fully-orchestrated music does more harm than good." care to justify?

Girl's pretty good; Matt - not so much.
