I Have Become Obsessed With Dune

  • I cannot stop thinking about Dune Part 2 ever since I stepped out of the theater. I've got so much to say about it and I just felt like rambling just so I could get it off my chest. This is one of the greatest adaptations I've ever seen and as a fan of the book I love what they did here. Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite directors ever and he is truly one of the best filmmakers of our time. He does such an amazing job of adapting Frank Herbert's material and he takes it in some new and exciting directions. I've got a lot to say so I hope you enjoy my initial thoughts and analysis.

    This pretty different from what I usually post on here but I just really wanted to get my initial thoughts out there. I usually have scripts for videos but I enjoyed just doing a chaotic ramble this time around. Hope you enjoy it! Have a great day!

    Now, listen to the 20 hour audiobook of Dune about 5 times, at 2x speed. Once you've had a certain amount of spice, you'll need more. Mwahahaha!

      I listened to it twice last year and just finished children of dune last week. I’m breaking it up with some GOT prequel books, but on to god emperor soon.

    Top 10 films all time right here
    Read and loved all six books
    Most immersive cinematic experience since Return of the King. So many wonderful, beautiful and unforgettable moments throughout
    There’s a deleted scene from Dune 1984 that came out recently, a really excellent scene with Alia, I would recommend looking it up. I agree she’s just about the best part of it 😁

    I came to the TH-cams searching for exactly this type of thing to give voice to my newfound Dune love. Your video was both entertaining and inspiring to me, and have subsequently enjoyed many of your other videos. Don’t be afraid to do off the cuff stuff like this. Sometimes the raw energy/passion is best captured in real time.

      I think I’m definitely gonna do this style of video for after I complete the Dune Saga. I have to read Heretics next and then Chapterhouse so I might do that video in a month or two.

    I think a lot of the designs for the harkonnens especially are probably kind of inspired by a lot of sci-fi art and comics from people like philippe druillet. the movie doesn't have the same vivid color pallette but I think I could see the resemblence.

    • @LavenderRex7705
      @LavenderRex7705  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Giedi Prime’s architecture also pulls a lot from the original Giger concept art! The film pulls from a lot of really cool sci-fi art that isn’t as dominant in today’s mainstream.

    • @tanngrisnr5076
      @tanngrisnr5076 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Of course! I really love that sort of sci-fi art that just has biomechanical wires and curves and stuff.

      It's a cold book, there's little to no emotion and it's all very cerebral and requires thinking. The characters are also verging on archetypes, in order to convey an idea to the reader. Add in that there's literally no wasted sentence in the book, every sentence means something... It's a thinking person's book, so if you don't like that, it's fine.

    • @timehusk

      @@timehusk It's funny that you find that offensive. Might want to check your attitude. I actually meant it as a negative. There's a lot good things about Dune, and almost all of them are bad for good story. A good story doesn't "require thinking", it tends to just emotionally impact you and maybe make you think. If the story requires thinking to be enjoyable, there's a question whether it's a story or a textbook.

    remember in the first movie when Paul kills Jamis? The bene gesserit naration says "when you take a life, you take your own." The taking of life changes Paul. Now contrast that with Feyd. Its on his birthday. with his bald head in the strange lighting when he screams he looks like a newborn baby. The doors opening to let him into the arena have a distinctly vaginal nature to them. Paul's life "ends" when he kills Jamis. But for Feyd he sees it as a beginning

    Is that photo of D.V. in the thumbnail real?! Because goddamn, LOL.
    This is one of the best analyses of Dune 1.2 I've seen [1]!
    About House Harkonnen, great observation about their vehicles being parasite insect-like. Personally, I think their giant air balloons look like an abnormal set of testicles. The central ship when Rabban tries to attack the Maud'Dib looks like a giant flea. In BTS interviews, Jacqueline West, the customer designer, explicitly states that the Harkonnen clothing style is bug-like.
    I love how much of a freak F.R. is in this adaptation. He looks like he's close to orgasming when Paul contemptuously stabs the Baron in the neck.
    *Footnote*
    [1] I've been a Dunehead since witnessing D.V.'s Dune 1.1, so I've worked out many of the observations in this video as well. But I'm glad you uploaded your thoughts, because hopefully it'll help to grow the fandom.

    I agree on every single word and also finally someone who understands the potrayal of the emperor the way I understood It! To me Christopher Walken did the perfect portrayal of this man who takes for granted his power and privilege then all of a sudden, surprise! the ballad of the thin man started playing in my head “Because something is happening here but you don't know what it is
    Do you, Mr. Shaddam IV?“
