This is a wonderful pattern! Where I live, it is incredibly cold in winter, but a loose-fitting garment like this can be layered over any coat to help insulate. I would add a hidden tie belt inside the coat for this reason. Maybe the scraps could make a hat? Normally when we are out in the deep-freeze, we don’t care how we look, but now we can look simply fabulous in these wonderful blanket wraps. Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦…
ah so cool to hear - and yes, I'm about to make a snood from one of the scraps of mine! It's also useful to hang onto the scraps for making repairs if needed too (as can be needed sometimes when working with vintage fabrics) 🥰 ✨
Love this so much. I have a heirloom blanket from my parents who have passed away. This will be a perfect way to repurpose and use as I wrap myself in the warmth of memories.
Probably the best sewing demonstration I’ve watched. I’m a beginner and I think I could manage this. Your thorough and clear instructions are impeccable. Thank you 😊
I love how detailed your instructions are! You talk about all the little things that are not usually mentioned, like how to do the darts and the nice hem.
Coolest coats ever! Thank you for making this tutorial. You are crystal clear in the way you explain, and the instruction is easy to follow for anyone.
OMG, I LOVE THIS COAT/Jacket and how you designed it to fit together! 👍🏼❤️😉 THANK YOU! I love how you teach without any waisted time! L❤VE. I love the stitch from your overlocker.
New subscriber here. Love you're directions. I especially like the content, no intrusive music and your calm speaking manner. I look forward too making this.
Your tips are really great! The one thing I would say, regarding using old blankets, otherwise known as vintage, is that the fibers may have already degraded to the point where some areas may fall apart part after washing from normal use when it’s made into a garment. I only know this, after having worked at a museum one summer when I was in college, where I assisted the repair department with vintage clothing. It was something that they talked about a lot and it is always stuck with me.
I love this pattern , I cut my coat with the blanket stitch trim running down the edge of the collar. I’m confused now that I may have done this wrong, however I’m thinking as long as you have a rectangle left after the sleeves are cut it doesn’t matter. I’m up to coat number 6. Your pattern is so easy and I have fallen in love with wool. Thank you so much.
Yes that's right! You can have the blanket stitch at the collar or hem - just whichever you like the look of best on the individual blanket 🥰 that's so cool you've made 6!! 😱 😍 💕 love that 🙃 ✨
Agree with other comments-super straightforward and well explained tutorial! I am sure that this won’t be my last blanket coat! Now on the lookout for a blanket like your shorter jacket-it is stunning!! Thank you so much!
@Sasha Starlight I made the jacket right after receiving the pattern. This is an excellent pattern. Great instructions and I love the style. If you are hesitating to order - don't!! Thank you so much!!
Ah so glad it all makes sense! The pattern has 2 size options which are both quite flexible - if you check the images in the pattern listing there's a full size chart you can check against your own measurements 🙃 💕 sashastarlight.etsy.com/uk/listing/1294068535/blanket-coat-pattern-digital-pdf-video
Hi Sasha 😊 I just purchased your coat pattern. I wanted to know the exact measurements of the original jacket on the mannequin . That is the exact style of coat I want to make. It is absolutely beautiful 😍 Thank you☺️
Hi Kim - sorry for the slow response! For pattern help it's always best to message me on Etsy as I get back to everyone there within 24hrs. The short jacket with the tassles or the long pastel one? If you have a watch of the chapter 'Choose Blanket' I give the measurements for both blankets/coats 🥰 ✨
Wow you are a fantastic teacher and your design is great! I want to purchase your pattern but could you help me add a hood to the shawl collar? I just want to pull the collar up over my head, it doesn’t need to be tailored or anything perfect.
ah thank you! I did have another customer add a hood - what I would say is it will look most polished 'grown on' to the pattern piece and you will need an extra large blanket to account for it. I'm always super happy to help with hacks/alts to my patterns - if you message me on Etsy I get back to everyone there within 24hrs 🥰 ✨
I bought a blanket of the minimum size because of the colors which I really like and because it seams quite difficult to find one as your rainbow one 😂😂 I already did one coat using your pattern (which is amazing!!) with a larger one blanket and I gifted it as a Xmas present to a close friend and...she doesn't stop telling me how she loves it!! Now this one's for myself and... I have tassels on the shorter side... struggling, but there's no other way than cut it this way to have them on the collar...suggestions?
Hi Laura! I used the shorter side of the rainbow blanket as I wanted to use the tassles at the collar & there wasn't a lot of difference between the 2 lengths on that one. I'd advise the best thing to do is to drape the blanket around your shoulders in the 2 directions with the top turned back like the collar will be to get an idea of the final effect 🙃 Also just to add - for the fastest response for pattern help I get back to messages within about 12hrs max on Etsy so do feel free to message me if you'd like any more guidance 🥰 ✨

I love the blanket coats but I don't understand how you are able to get your machine to sew through two layers of blanket. My machine wouldn't even sew through an old worn out towel. Do you have a special industrial machine?
Mine is an industrial but a lot of domestic machines can handle heavy cloth as well - although not all! If you're looking for a beefier machine on a budget I'd recommend a vintage Singer era 50s-70s or similar - the internal parts in those are solid metal, they're always repairable & are able to sew through anything! 👌 ✨

Did you use machine to make the edge finishes? They look hand-stitched.
The blanket stitch on the longer coat is a feature of the original blanket that I kept 🥰 ✨
What kind of steamer do you use in this video?
I use a Polti Vaporella 505 - not sponsored but I really rate it - best iron you can get for under £100 imo! 🙃 💕
