Eventually, I discarded the water and threw the nuts somewhere, anywhere in the small garden I have. And, what do you know? It grew to a patch of green leaves now, and am waiting when to harvest. Coincidentally, I stuck, just so simply, some with skins, into the soil. Same thing happened. Very glad I did.

This makes a really neat project for youth groups and classrooms.. Peanuts and potatoes can be grown in grow bags .. there is one available that has a "window" in the side; covered by a velcro-secured flap, so the kids can watch the peanuts/potatoes grow and mature without disturbing the plant.
I had a great uncle that had a peanut farm in Sumter SC when I was growing up and I Loved digging them up lol This year I decided to try to grow some and I now have about a dozen plants in 7gallon grow bags. I’m excited to see what I get from them. This video was very helpful, thank you
If you've never seen the peanut fields in South Georgia, it's actually a sight to behold. To me, I liken it to standing on the beach for the first time and looking out at the ocean. Only water as far as the eye can see. Same for the peanut fields. You can stand at the edge of the field and only see peanut plants, for as far as you can see. Before they begin growing, all you can see is red dirt. A LOT of red dirt. Thanks for showing everyone what this looks like up close. 👍👍👍

I wrap the branches around inside the pot. I too learned that a pot is not enough room for the pegs. Your friends idea of burying the pot so the pegs can reach the soil is a great idea. I hung and dried mine, but I saw on one video, he washed them at harvesting and boiled them for an hr with some salt. Here in FL. there are many roadside vendors with propane burners and large commercial cooking pots boiling peanuts..some with just salt, others with extremely hot peppers and spices..if not to hot, I like the spicy. I have not roasted any, what I harvested I turned around and replanted. You never get all of them so where ever you plant one year expect to have sprouts come up the following the next growing season like you, I thought it was a fun experiment. thank you for sharing..
Thanks for the great tip Janet! I never thought of wrapping the braches in the pot, but that sounds like it should work. I gave mine a brine bath, then roasted them in the oven. We sure did like the way they came out.

I planted them for the first time this year in zone 7 central VA. I started mine a bit late inside in peat pots under grow lights and on a heat mat and then set them outside in the garden. I didn't realize they would outgrow the area and had to move the mulch way and put down some compost for them to drop their pegs into. When I pulled the first plants last week I found lots of seedlings already! They won't survive the winter here so gonna cover some with heavy layer of mulch and take some inside to the heat mat and grow lights and see what I can encourage to hold out until spring! Great experiment and now I have to dig the rest and get them dried! Thanks for the video!

That's what you do with potatoes as well, isn't it? Anyway, that's what I thought about when I saw him taking out the plant while it was still green. I did enjoy this video very much, though. And I have a newfound respect for the work it takes to grow a handful of peanuts. 😅
Our school garden in Indianapolis grew 4 peanut plants in a raised 2 x 8 bed. I acquired some Alabama "Virginia peanuts" from a grower while visiting this past Spring. We learned they need at least 120 days of growing so we started them in pots in April inside under our grow light. We planted them in May and harvested them at the end of October before Frost came! The kids enjoyed oven roasted peanuts to end our growing season!

I made the exact same mistake , too small a pot !!! Wish I had seen your video earlier. I'm trying to fix my mistake by keeping another container by the side so that the pegs have some where to go in . Great video 👍.

Growing in pots is usually done to save room in the garden, if you bury the pot anyway there is no need for a pot. Peanuts don't need a deep pot but they do need a wide pot.
So relaxing to watch!!! I have never seen how a peanut grows. Not only that, I bought some raw ones at the farmers market, and looked you up just because of that. It was quite enlightening, watching the progression of peanuts!!!Thank you!

I’ve never seen how green beans were grown, and grew some. Our tomato 🍅 plants are still abundant and delicious!!!!! By the way, I loved the idea of burying the container. I planted peanuts during the initial stages of Corona. I chose it in an effort to provide healthy snacks for my family. My crops have flowered and have dropped pegs. However I would love some suggestions on how to care the plant at this stage. Thanks for sharing this video.
You're welcome, Debbie! I really didn't do much except for watering after the plant dropped pegs. I tried to loosen the soil before the plants produce pegs on the ones I grew in the ground. I've heard of people hilling peanut plants, but I've never tried that.
Just planted 6 peanuts into a growing tray. When they sprout imma plant them like I do potatoes I think. Because after seeing this video I have some ideas about how to maximize productivity. Thank you fir sharing your experience for All of Us to see and learn from.
Nice! Last summer I noticed that one of the peanuts I used for feeding birds had germinated and transplanted it into a small pot to see what would happen. I was checking the little plant a few minutes ago and found there was a tiny peanut growing. My plans are to try planting more in much bigger pots, now and then taking them outside in late spring. (I live in Minnesota not enough warm days in the year.) Glad I ran into this video by luck!
@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I actually went out and got a bag of peanuts for the birds so I could start growing some indoors to then move them outside when our temp goes (way) up following your method. I plan to try it with sweet potatoes also. This is upper midwest as in northern Minnesota.
I love your results. I plan on planting a few pots now... After all my Dwarf Goats lOVE Peanut plants! They love Peanut hay! They love peanuts! So I will have to put the pots in the front yard as the goats are in the backyard, but We will all enjoy the treats!!

G`day 🎵 I am growing peanuts on my balcony and have roughly the same size pots, after some research i decided to pin down the flowering stems to the ground and it's now at the stage where i need to pin down another lot .... i was dubious about the results but after watching your vid i`m keen to see the how many peanuts can be harvested .... cheers to you for a cool vid 👍🎶

During winter season, my mother makes Indian dish called Methi-Aaloo(मैंथी-आलू) and Chaaval roti(चावल रोटी) and that is my one of the favourite vegetarian dish. The main ingredients of the dish are: Fenugreek(मैंथी) plant leaves, Potato(आलू); & Rice flour for bread or chapati(चावल रोटी). I don't know what spices she uses in the dish but If you like vegetarian food then you may like it as well.
Another tuber told me that peanuts dont grow on trees, so i came for a second source. All i can say is NUTS, i had no idea! Fun video thanks my nutty youtube friend!

Great information thanks. I made a mistake and planted them in the ground. Gophers loves peanut. I don't know if they can smell them or what but they ate a pound of peanut. Luckily I save three to put in pots. They did fine. I will use wide containers next time. Lesson learned.

When I see this, I think God is really good. He rewards a little effort (planting ONE seed) with a 30 fold (or more) yield. Amazing how God designed it to multiply.

I believe a neighbor feeds the Scrub Jays peanuts and occasionally they get dropped in my yard. To be honest, I'm still not positive because my yellow flowers are so tiny. I never knew when they say a LONG growing season it does NOT mean you plant once and then replant a second crop... it means you plant and then it takes a LONG time!! No wonder I see those GIGANTIC peanut fields!! But ... it surely DOES sound worth it to me by just how tickled you sound when you see that there IS a reward at the end... And you made a REALLY GOOD video... very informative, interesting, and you did it calmly without rushing and holding that camera steady. The only questions I have would be: I am assuming that you grew it in Full Sun, so is there much of a growth/yield difference between the various species, and what species did you plant? Thank you very much for the very kind and inspirational comment! Yes, I did grow it in full sun. The variety that I grew was Virginia Jumbo. This year I'm going to be growing Tennessee Red. I've only grown the Virginia Jumbo, so I won't be able to make a comparison till later this year. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Tennessee Reds do. Thanks again for the great comment!

Based on this, I would almost assume this thing could take over the yard. 1 peanut became 12....pretty awesome. 12 peanut plants would be 144 peanuts. Enough for a yearly snack :)
I want to do peanuts but we keep finding them everywhere out in the yard so I think either we actually have em growing somewhere or birds are dropping them off. It looks like if you want a lot you will have to plant maybe in those 20 gallon pots or do multiples. I want to make natural peanut butter :)
Natural peanut butter sounds good. That is weird about finding peanuts. Maybe you have a neighbor that feeds them to the squirrels. We planted some out in the garden too. Those plants got much bigger. I'll have a video on them soon.
Great look forward to it. I don't know I'll be digging deep in the dirt and then I find full peanuts then randomly they end up in my planters too lol there's lots of crows and haws out here along wit many other birds so who knows but they do drop sunflower seeds over here too.
how did they taste? how frequent did you have to water it? and how did you plant the peanut?(in water first, or just stuck it in soil and watered?) do you have to plant the nut with the shell or do you think it would be faster to grow it with the shell off, or would it just rot? i would love to see more videos from you on this!
Hi Stephanie. They tasted great. We roasted them. I started them indoors. You should take the peanut out of the shell, but leave the skin on. I will be growing peanuts again this year, but I'm not sure how much detail I will show on them this year.
Thanks for the informative video! You pointed out the seed peanut when you repotted. Is keeping the seed peanut attached necessary? This is my first year growing peanuts and I have a few seedlings going. I removed the seed peanut off a wilting seedling because I couldn't determine what was wrong.

Oh I thought they were just like beans hanging from the stems... Clearly I had no idea! However I won't complain any more for the peanut prices in the Market. It would take 3 or 4 plants just for a bag of peanuts!
Good point on the price. They are very fun to grow, and it was satisfying to make our own roasted peanuts, but for the amount you get per plant, it really is easier to buy them.
We are in zone 6a and I have been wanting to grow peanuts. My hubby loves roasted, salted peanuts and I love boiled ones. After watching yours I think I will try it. I may start them inside and then plant them directly in the raised beds.
I think you will really enjoy growing them. I know that we did. I've tried several different types of peanuts, and Virginia Jumbo worked the best for me. Good luck with them!
You know like an idiot I figured I would try peanuts this year. I threw them in a pot with carrot seeds not thinking it would wind up being a cluster. Well they are both growing beautiful now. I really wish I turned to TH-cam first. Your video was great. Lessons learned for all today.

I hung ours in our detached garage to dry. Don't know if that will help, but rain sure can mess things up.
U supposed to let the leafs be brown even drop on the floor. That when all grains stop growing. I used to help my mom and dad plant and pick.

I planted peanuts during the initial stages of Corona. I chose it in an effort to provide healthy snacks for my family.
My crops have flowered and have dropped pegs. However I would love some suggestions on how to care the plant at this stage.

You're welcome, Debbie! I really didn't do much except for watering after the plant dropped pegs. I tried to loosen the soil before the plants produce pegs on the ones I grew in the ground. I've heard of people hilling peanut plants, but I've never tried that.

Just planted 6 peanuts into a growing tray. When they sprout imma plant them like I do potatoes I think. Because after seeing this video I have some ideas about how to maximize productivity. Thank you fir sharing your experience for All of Us to see and learn from.

Nice! Last summer I noticed that one of the peanuts I used for feeding birds had germinated and transplanted it into a small pot to see what would happen. I was checking the little plant a few minutes ago and found there was a tiny peanut growing. My plans are to try planting more in much bigger pots, now and then taking them outside in late spring. (I live in Minnesota not enough warm days in the year.) Glad I ran into this video by luck!

@@MidwestGardener Thanks. I actually went out and got a bag of peanuts for the birds so I could start growing some indoors to then move them outside when our temp goes (way) up following your method. I plan to try it with sweet potatoes also. This is upper midwest as in northern Minnesota.

I love your results. I plan on planting a few pots now... After all my Dwarf Goats lOVE Peanut plants! They love Peanut hay! They love peanuts! So I will have to put the pots in the front yard as the goats are in the backyard, but We will all enjoy the treats!!

I have some planted in containers in my greenhouse. It is my first time planting them also. I have a long way to go. They are just flowering.

I am growing peanuts on my balcony and have roughly the same size pots, after some research i decided to pin down the flowering stems to the ground and it's now at the stage where i need to pin down another lot .... i was dubious about the results but after watching your vid i`m keen to see the how many peanuts can be harvested .... cheers to you for a cool vid 👍🎶

@@MidwestGardener You should really find about it Sir. During winter season, my mother makes Indian dish called Methi-Aaloo(मैंथी-आलू) and Chaaval roti(चावल रोटी) and that is my one of the favourite vegetarian dish.
The main ingredients of the dish are:
Fenugreek(मैंथी) plant leaves,
Potato(आलू);
&
Rice flour for bread or chapati(चावल रोटी).
I don't know what spices she uses in the dish but If you like vegetarian food then you may like it as well.

Great information thanks. I made a mistake and planted them in the ground. Gophers loves peanut. I don't know if they can smell them or what but they ate a pound of peanut. Luckily I save three to put in pots. They did fine. I will use wide containers next time. Lesson learned.

we boil fresh peanuts with shells upon harvesting it...just add a lil salt on the water n boil for 20-25mins...

When I see this, I think God is really good. He rewards a little effort (planting ONE seed) with a 30 fold (or more) yield. Amazing how God designed it to multiply.

Well peanuts are called "Erdnüsse", which means earthnuts translated, here in Germany. Otherwise I would think so too, for sure lol

Wow how cool 😎 and I’m in Florida the land of the peanuts! I never knew when they say a LONG growing season it does NOT mean you plant once and then replant a second crop... it means you plant and then it takes a LONG time!! No wonder I see those GIGANTIC peanut fields!! But ... it surely DOES sound worth it to me by just how tickled you sound when you see that there IS a reward at the end... And you made a REALLY GOOD video... very informative, interesting, and you did it calmly without rushing and holding that camera steady. The only questions I have would be: I am assuming that you grew it in Full Sun, so is there much of a growth/yield difference between the various species, and what species did you plant? Thank you very much for the very kind and inspirational comment! Yes, I did grow it in full sun. The variety that I grew was Virginia Jumbo. This year I'm going to be growing Tennessee Red. I've only grown the Virginia Jumbo, so I won't be able to make a comparison till later this year. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Tennessee Reds do. Thanks again for the great comment!

I want to do peanuts but we keep finding them everywhere out in the yard so I think either we actually have em growing somewhere or birds are dropping them off.
It looks like if you want a lot you will have to plant maybe in those 20 gallon pots or do multiples. I want to make natural peanut butter :)
Natural peanut butter sounds good. That is weird about finding peanuts. Maybe you have a neighbor that feeds them to the squirrels. We planted some out in the garden too. Those plants got much bigger. I'll have a video on them soon.

I don't know I'll be digging deep in the dirt and then I find full peanuts then randomly they end up in my planters too lol there's lots of crows and haws out here along wit many other birds so who knows but they do drop sunflower seeds over here too.

The pot I used was only about 3 or 4 gallons. I would say that the bigger the better, and a wider one would also be a good thing.

how did they taste? how frequent did you have to water it? and how did you plant the peanut?(in water first, or just stuck it in soil and watered?) do you have to plant the nut with the shell or do you think it would be faster to grow it with the shell off, or would it just rot? i would love to see more videos from you on this!
Hi Stephanie. They tasted great. We roasted them. I started them indoors. You should take the peanut out of the shell, but leave the skin on. I will be growing peanuts again this year, but I'm not sure how much detail I will show on them this year.

Thanks for the informative video! You pointed out the seed peanut when you repotted. Is keeping the seed peanut attached necessary? This is my first year growing peanuts and I have a few seedlings going. I removed the seed peanut off a wilting seedling because I couldn't determine what was wrong.

Good point on the price. They are very fun to grow, and it was satisfying to make our own roasted peanuts, but for the amount you get per plant, it really is easier to buy them.
We are in zone 6a and I have been wanting to grow peanuts. My hubby loves roasted, salted peanuts and I love boiled ones. After watching yours I think I will try it. I may start them inside and then plant them directly in the raised beds.
I think you will really enjoy growing them. I know that we did. I've tried several different types of peanuts, and Virginia Jumbo worked the best for me. Good luck with them!

I grew these from seed peanuts. I bought those from a seller on Amazon. They were Virginia Jumbo peanuts.
You know like an idiot I figured I would try peanuts this year. I threw them in a pot with carrot seeds not thinking it would wind up being a cluster. Well they are both growing beautiful now. I really wish I turned to TH-cam first. Your video was great. Lessons learned for all today.
