- The Chinese community in Egypt has grown to over 10,000 currently, thanks to a burgeoning commercial relationship between the two countries.
Increasing numbers of Chinese have come to study, work and open businesses in the Arab world's most populous country, where many have developed an affinity for its life, culture and its people.
For over a quarter century, China and Egypt have steadily been learning how to make money together - through a range of economic and infrastructure projects.
Egypt has awarded several contracts to Chinese companies for the construction of a $20bn administrative and residential city that will be physically linked to Cairo. And China is the lead investor in the construction of a planned multi-billion dollar industrial zone around the Suez Canal.
Each new collaboration is an opportunity for the Chinese diaspora to grow their businesses.
South of Cairo, the Shaqel Thoben area is one of the world's major production centres for marble and granite.
"The equipment and machines used here are from China," says Zhaou Ping, a marble and granite factory worker who has been in Egypt for three years.
"My boss in China asked me to come with the equipment and be a consultant... Before I came to Egypt, I worked in the same field in China. When an Egyptian manufacturer visited my factory, he asked me to work with him. I now have many Muslim friends in the factory where I work. They treat me like a brother and a friend so I don't feel like a stranger or foreigner in Egypt. I feel I'm in my country, with my family."
The Chinese have quite quickly helped diversify Egypt's economy. In 1999, there were only a few hundred but their numbers continue to grow as the two countries build stronger economic ties.
Some who started out as small traders are now successful business owners, like restaurant owner Po Wein Zhoun. Po cleverly opened a Chinese restaurant when she realised there was a growing demand for it.
"I realised many Chinese in Egypt have problems finding Chinese food...So I opened a small Chinese restaurant six years ago. After two years, the restaurant started becoming successful. For a year-and-a-half, I bought this restaurant from another Chinese," says Po, who is married to an Egyptian.
Business is the main but attraction for Chinese who come to Egypt; but some are also drawn to the country's ancient heritage, like blogger Ali who studied Arabic and Egyptian history back in China. Fascinated, "I read an essay about Egypt and its pyramids and loved it. It's about mystery of the pyramids going back thousands of years. No one knows how they were actually built," says Ali.
For some, their love of Egypt becomes profound, forming friendships that touch them and make them want to stay permanently.

China has also trade relationship between India.. From the era of harappan civilization.. Chinese coins are excavated from these sites.. Many emperor of India.. Built Buddhist temple for Chinese monks.. They respected them a lot

These Buddhist monks from China were very much respected ..they stayed and write so much documents about India.. in manuscripts.. Please don't be biased towards India.. We also went through so much of atrocities from britishers.. There were around more than 1000 ethnic groups lived in India.. But now only 50-60 ethnic groups are there.. Britishers killed all of them..
This is the wonderful confluence of two ancient civilizations,Egyptian and Chinese.

fascinating . Indians have been living in Africa for the past 200 years but the Chinese have accomplished more in 15 years. Nothing beats their hard work .

I can't help but feel that this is a very well-produced video showcasing the realities of Chinese entrepreneurs in Egypt. It's heartening to see people getting over their cultural differences and initial impressions of one another to truly see each other as unique individuals with dignity and respect for each others' culture. There may be many who say the Arabs are being fake, or that the Chinese just want to take over. But I choose to see how things could be and believe that it is possible to live with people who are unlike yourself and yet find it in yourself to come to love and accept them as they are.

I am from Malaysia and in Malaysia there are many Chinese migrated there, they are peaceful not demanding too much and always just want to be left alone and are very hardworking and peaceful people...but they are always being blamed for everything so I really don't get it, I love the Chinese culture

Ella Shy hi there Malaysian here too. I'm half Chinese myself with a lot of Chinese family and friends. With all respects Malaysian Chinese and mainland Chinese are two different people though. Even Malaysian Chinese are not too keen into mainland Chinese. As for the blaming part in Malaysia I'm always bias to Chinese haha because now Malaysia is getting more of a Malay country. I even dare to say racism in Malaysia is getting worse. On other note I've lived in Egypt for six years and even Egyptian are more open minded than Malays. I read something recently that a hundred years ago when some Chinese went to Egypt they saw the Egyptian hieroglyphs, many of them were surprised that it looked almost identical to ancient Chinese characters, some even thought there's some special bond between the two countries several thousand years ago

It's good to see cross culture relationships through trade but I hope Egypt will be able to hold on to it's warm culture and stave off some of China's materialism.
We are not interested in doing something like missionary to promote the materialism. We make a judgement or cooperate by logic not ideology. Not like religion which play a role to unify the mind of the people, materialistic or not for other countries doesn't help us. That's true the materialism is in our education. But just like teaching 1+1=2, you just need to teach once or twice and learn it. You don't need to go to the church or mosque 4 times a week to listen someone repeating '1+1=2 it's true, it's true, it's true...'

am not sure if this is entirely correct, this is a description which usually is given to germans. maybe it is true for mainland chinese, but the chinese i know from hong kong, indonesia, taiwan, america like to eat and have fun. taiwan and singapore are full with night markets catering to that.
China has help Egypt enlarged the new Suez Canal.China can build enough 4th generation safe pebble bed ,helium cooled nuclear plants in Egypt for electricity and desalination.The desalinationh water can be pipe into the lined Quattar Depression and irrigate the desert in between..As for Chinese,they do as the Roman do,they adapt to the culture ,work hard, study hard and become Egyptian.

The Chinese are moving all over the world spurring trade and growth into such countries like Egypt. You can tell the ones that have assimilated by the way they walk. The Chinese that haven't assimilated still walk like a Chinese but the ones that assimilated walk like an Egyptian.

My great great grandparents escaped China because they faced difficulties living there. It pretty much sucks that we still face difficulties living in the new land hundreds of years later.
For better or worse, your next generation most likely will be working for Asian bosses, not necessarily Chinese but Asian in general.
Just look at competitiveness of Asian students in the colleges.
They, including their parents, are obsessed by education.

Hehehe weird people in the comments the no.of chinese was about 300k before 2011 but after 25thJan Revolution most of them left the countrey. Like any other foreigner who come to egypt for work they try their best to succeed and they have better chances than most of egyptians as they already have money to invest but technically in a country with a high % of poverty most of egyptians need to travel abroad mainly to the gulf so that they could save enough money just to survive . A lot of workers have to work around 12_16 hrs per day just to get a resonable wage . With all that corruption and struggling we are suffering from , here comes a person chilled behind a keyboard saying" Egyptians are lazy and they should learn from chinese" . Most of foreigners packed their bags and ran away with the first sharp turn but we are not cause we belong here to our own land , foreigners should adapt to our culture not the opposite or they will be isolated . Have a nice day☺☺☺
