We often found ourselves wishing we’d sailed when the forecast was Orange but we’d never have set sail in the red. Glad we’re not the only ones who can’t catch fish! We’ve decided that’s why it’s called fishing and not catching! 😂😂👍🏻
We are the same! Good to know we aren't just being nervous nelly's 😁 We'd rather just sit at anchor drinking wine and waiting for the orange haha. Yup, that's a good point 😅
Getting pro at those haircuts now Jade! 10/10! Chris hasn't left the boat for four days now either... but that's just by choice! Cant imagine what its like to be bobbing around out there without a pontoon to step on! ps. we saw the beans
Thanks guys!! 🙌 It's actually so relaxing, apart from when it's rolly of an evening and hard to sleep which sucks 👎 hahaha well spotted 👀 hopefully see you both soon 😬😬
I always figured that I went cruising to enjoy life, not be uncomfortable. There is no shame in waiting for better weather. On the other hand I always found waiting on weather to be huge test of my patience. Learning the patience to wait on weather was a quite a chore and picking a comfortable anchorage to wait on weather is truly a skill worth pursuing. Fair winds guys
That's a good point. We're the same, we definitely wanted to enjoy it as a priority. We think that's what makes the lifestyle more sustainable for us to keep up long term. We definitely agree! We've got a lot to learn about picking comfortable anchorages and haven't been very successful yet 😂 looking forward to improving though! Cheers for watching and all our best ⛵
Recently subscribed , enjoying your videos so far.but still too many to get through so Slowly plodding through. Ref low pressure systems and high winds. All depends on you, your abilities your boat and your confidence and knowledge of how she behaves, hull shape keel type, displacement , experience, and ultimately what your needing to do. Offshore racers use low pressures to their advantage .Whilst others run for the nearest marina. You’ve got to be in a blow to get the experience , know how your boat and you handle and then work from there. Did I hear you mention in your how much it costs video you’d bought a storm jib? Think so..but good, one of the best bits of kit you can have. Use it ….regularly, get used to hoisting it up and down and lashing it down over and over again in all sorts of weather. Pick yourself a wind speed (25knots maybe) and tell yourselves that that’s the point your getting it up, she’ll heel less and handle better with it up as the wind picks up. Your roller furler Genoa loses much of its efficiency after just a couple of turns, it loses its shape, creates terrible airflow and becomes a burden after a while, loads of people think coz there roller furlers sail is furled in to just a bare scrap that’s that there in the safe, there not unfortunately. With a storm jib and reduced /reefed mainsail you can maintain a much closer to the wind sail for longer with less stress on the boat and crew.Plus the added advantage is if the weather continues to Increase and become unbearable, you have the correct sail already hoisted for hove too simply by turning into the wind and letting the sail back against itself. Have you guys read the book storm tactics and heavy weather sailing by Lin and Larry pardy? A must have in your book itinerary. Once you’ve read this a few times and got your head around the practices involved with hoving too, laying to a sea anchor and staying offshore then instead of relying on apps like windy and I predict etc you’ll be able to gauge for yourselves what’s best to do. Personally I prefer staying offshore and sailing with storm sails on up until the sea state starts gets tiring, I’ll hove too, deploy a sea anchor out and let the storm pass through , resting both mind and body and taking less knocking than if I were closer to shore. Again, it’s all about what you want to do. Don’t be put off by apps though , trust in yourselves, your experience and confidence in your boat.
IMO when a boat is your home it's wise to err on the side of caution when it comes down to the possibility of damaging it or yourselves. There's a saying which goes something like "There are plenty of old sailors and plenty of bold sailors but there are few old bold sailors." I really like this video. It is far more representative of the way I and most people I know go boating rather than the urgent schedules which some TH-cam channels seem to impose on themselves for no obvious reasons.
That's a very good point, it's our home and not just a sailing boat. We do sometimes wonder whether we're overcautious compared to others on similar sized boats etc, but I guess at the end of the day It only really matters what we're comfortable in anyway 👍 Love that saying, makes a lot of sense! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊 fair winds 👍
You guys are doing what I plan to do next year. I'm also from the Midlands - (land locked Tamworth) so 3 hours from any sea in any direction. Last year was my first sailing season so cant wait to retire now and head out.
Wow that's awesome! So cool to meet someone else with similar plans from the Midlands, glad you still managed to find the sea haha. Hopefully it won't be long until you're out there too then, hope to see you on the big blue one day 😊
Love your question on weather and what would I do....when I get to the point you are at, I will be able to do whatever I darn well want on any particular day....Anchoring with good food and wine or wanting some adventure and heading out and testing myself. Love that you guys "just did it" and are able to make the day to day decisions on "whatever you feel like in the moment"! Well done!
That's a very good point! Having the option to choose on each day whether to move or stay put is surely the big draw of this lifestyle 😁 thanks for commenting, and hope you're well x
Whilst you should err on the side of caution, you do need to get in some heavy weather experience some time. Best to plan it on purpose. Just make sure you have an easy and safely accessible harbour or sheltered anchorage at hand.
Yes we definitely agree. In the next video we sail in 32 knots of wind, it was good to start building our confidence ( in ourselves and our boat). That's been the challenge for us heading down the Portuguese coast, the protected anchorages were few and far between. Looking forward to having more options in the Med 😊 Cheers for commenting 👍
We love you guys. Hope we buy some similar size sailboat next year and meet you somewhere around Spain / Portugal. Enjoy the time of freedom :)* Pete & Petra
Thanks so much :) Hope you do come meet us! Awesome that you're looking for something similar, If you ever have any questions ask away 👍 All our best, Jade and Brynn
Hi guys. 50knots of wind is a handful. I certainly wouldn't go out in it. The thing is, there are those times when you get caught in heavy weather, particularly if you're passage making. It's always good to have a plan. But you need to get out in some stuff, I see it ends with you in 30 knots of wind. Get comfortable with it, use it, get the boat comfortable. But I'd say if you've got the choice and you're not sure, stay on the hook. As they say ; better to be on shore looking out wishing you could be there than getting very wet and worried, looking back at shore and wishing you could be there! Much love from the Forest of Dean.
Hey Andy, that's good to know. We agree with you, we definitely need to safely get out in heavier stuff. I guess the thing for us is building up the confidence in our boat as well as ourselves too. Essentially it's definitely no blue water boat, is aimed more as a weekend cruiser. we want to test what us and the boat is capable of, sure this will be a gradual thing the more nm we cover. Already doing this trip has shown us that Talisman can cope very well in some decent swell (though it's very uncomfortable) And also as you'll see in the 30 knots it copes very well, which we weren't expecting and were apprehensive about. Great advice there and cheers for commenting! 👍
@@ChasingCurrents my dufour is a lot lighter than your boat. I had 30 knots of wind coming down the Severn just south of the new M4 bridge. On the Severn, with the massive tide, you don't have much choice about direction of travel - although I have decided to try going about, sort of stemming the tide, I could probably just sit in the same spot for a few hours! If you've got plenty of seaway and lots of time you can find the most comfortable point of sail or deploy a sea anchor ( something I've never done), and just go with it until it calms down. A moving sailing boat is usually a lot more comfortable than one that's just being tossed about. Anyway, you'll find out that you can cope and, as long as you've looked after her, so can your boat. Of course you should definitely not be foolhardy.
