  • The Puget Sound Model Railroad Engineers (PSMRE) is a model railroad club located in the Washington State History Museum located in downtown Tacoma, WA. Built as a museum exhibit, their layout also provides a challenging operations environment, as it represents the Tacoma area in the 1950’s. Largely focused on the Northern Pacific’s operations, they operate trains from the Great Northern, Milwaukee Road and Union Pacific. This layout tour gets behind the scenes of this large layout in a working museum in downtown Tacoma, how it has transformed over the years, and how the group organizes themselves and their operations.
    The three source videos that make up the bulk of the presentation were filmed and produced by Steve Carter and Marshall Wilson, and can also be viewed on the club's Facebook page at / puget-sound-model-rail... .
    This video was recorded at the May 8, 2021, Zoom session of monthly layout tours held by the fourth division of the Pacific Northwest Region (www.4DPNR.com) of the National Model Railroading Association (www.nmra.org), and edited by Burr Stewart. These sessions are held on the second Saturday of each month, and feature two 30 minute virtual layout tours followed by up to 15 minutes of audience Q&A.
    The PSMRE model railroad represents Tacoma, WA railroading in the 1950's. The 20' by 85' exhibit area provides a compressed view of local landmarks from Tacoma's Asarco Tunnel to Stampede Pass, and includes trackage and equipment from the Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Union Pacific and Milwaukee Road railroads. In addition to being a public display, the model is used as an operating forum for PSMRE members.
    The exhibit is located on Level 5 of the Washington State History Museum, in Tacoma, WA. It can be viewed during normal museum hours. When no PSMRE operators are in attendance, five trains run automatically at the push of a button. Museum admission is required to view the layout.
    Their regularly-scheduled operating sessions occur the first Saturday of every month. The sessions typically run from about 11 am to about 3 pm. During these sessions, club members operate the model using "real railroad methods", including: a dispatcher, who communicates with the train crews via radio; road crews, who run passenger trains and freight trains according to correct procedures and schedules; and yard crews, who sort and arrange cars into trains. Their goal is to operate the railroad as if it was a typical day in the mid 1950’s.

    Echo other comments that this is a masterpiece of a layout. The turntable area is a particular favourite bit for me, but the looks like it is real. Well done to all that created this layout 😊👍

    Several years ago, I visited this layout and spent hours there. I was stunned by the attention to historical detail. Superb and well done. Modelers must visit this place in Tacoma. For me personally, the scenes are a wild ride to yesteryear. In 1969 when we were UPS students, my wife-to-be and I took the train from Eugene to Tacoma after visiting my aunt. We detrained at the old Union Station, so different from the new blah cinder block Tacoma station. The copper smelter, Ruston, everything on the layout is now really freaky to see given memories from long ago. I was last able to catch the train between Portland and Tacoma in 2019. Maybe after COVID. . . . . This layout is a must-see for all railroad modelers in the NW. I'm glad someone finally decided to feature it on You Tube.

    i've seen alot larger domes on buildings but that is the most beutiful dome i have ever seen. 2 bad america has turned its back on the railways, thats like turning your back on that dome and that dome is pure art!

    Thanks for the video walk through time. I have visited your layout and it is absolutely beautiful. I grew up in tacoma for my junior high and senior high school days. So many of the things you pointed out were there when I was a kid from 1958 until I left for the Army in 1972. Looking forward to revisiting you in the near future. Thanks again. Jim

    I have been watching this layout take shape since 1996. I remember when members were paining the backgrounds and seeing all the benchwork going in. I always wanted to join the club, but I was always too far from the club. I hope when I get a teaching position in the area, I would like to join it.

    Easily one of the best model railroad videos I have ever seen. A first class production of a first class model railroad. Well done to all, the modelers and the video crew.
    I visited the museum from Australia in 2000. I don’t remember much except for the spectacular scenery. I have studied the whole Tacoma, Puyullap Valley, Cascade Mountain region in detail a lot since that time and plan to model it in N scale extensively myself.
    One question… at 21:53 there is an industrial lead going off on the right. The industry it serves is most clearly seen at about 22:00. What is that industry?
    Thanks a lot.

    One of the best layout tours that I have seen of one of the best layouts that I have seen. Two questions: First how do you clean all the scenery and I mean more than just the track? And second, what kind of an operating system do you use when the club is in one of the monthly op sessions?

    Such a great video. I am dying to know how you put the F unit mask on the cab ride video.

    • @fangameempire
      @fangameempire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could use a cheap video editing software to edit a photo taken from inside a cab onto footage of your choice, just erase the window in photoshop before adding it.

    Will be in the area this summer on vacation and hope to come by. First I learned about the copper smelter on this video, very informative. Did the smelter take in ore from over seas?

    What software gives that F unit cab video overlay ? And what brand are those semaphore signals ?

    • @OttercoveProductions
      @OttercoveProductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The overlay is a photograph (used with permission) that was edited in to a mask (hole where the glass is). This mask was used in Adobe's Premier Pro to produce the video. The semaphores are from Tomar. They are attached to 3D printed "hanger" that hold the servos which move the blades. These assemblies were then dropped through 7/8" holes and the area re-sceniced.
