I worked in a backstreet video shop in the 80's and this was one of my favourite sci-fi movies of that era and came home with me regularly. It's a remake of Hell in the Pacific, with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune, another great film.
Both actors did such a wonderful job in this movie. Simple film on the difficult topic hating another civilization you know nothing about. This is over looked and it shouldn’t be .
I am having a hard time believing they added the last act just because of the word “mine” in the title. “Inconceivable!!!” I enjoy your videos very much, Mr. M. Keep em’ coming.

Dennis Quaid isn't really an actor you would expect to see starring in sci-fi movies, but he does it very well. Innerspace was another great movie he was in. I bet he would have been great at playing Hans Solo, he has that kind of Harrison Ford coolness.
I watched this on VHS during a very unhappy time in my life. Both my girlfriend and my employer had told me that my services were no longer needed. The hopeful message of this film was much appreciated. As is this reminder of that message.
Stargate SG1 also did their version of this movie and actually called the episode Enemy Mine. Lou Gossett Jr later did guest star several times on the show but it had nothing to do with that episode.
Didn’t see this in the theatre either, but saw it during the 1600 times it was shown on HBO. Seemed like every time I turned on HBO, there it was. And I’d wind up watching it, from no matter where it was in the movie. This film always kind of reminded me of Robinson Crusoe on Mars.
It loosely reminded me of Robinson Carusoe on Mars. I love this picture, LGJ and Dennis Quaid turned in awesome performances, their interactions throughout are so genuine and emotional. It's such a shame this bombed at the box office...
Enemy Mine is truly one of my all time favorite Sci-fi films and I myself own this fabulous movie as well on DVD, And a job very nicely greatly informatively explained and executed in every detail way shape and format provided on Enemy Mine wonderfully well done by you indeed Sir!👌.
@Dan: the most of the props, costums, sets and model ships are still in the Bavarian Film Studios in Munich, where a big part of the movie was shot. Petersen shot in this studios also Das Boot und The Neverending Story. I was 1989 at the movie tour with my family. I had the chance to walk through the spacestation corridors, sitting in Dennis Quaid spaceship, see some masks and costumes and props
I looked into that, but I wasn't aware it's still was there today. I know it was there about 10 years ago but I couldn't find any current information. Let me take another look :-)
@@MoviesMusicMonsters A few years ago I interviewed the studios' branch manager named Thomas Hissia. Who is or was also responsible for the props fund. I don't know if he still is. But he told me that they don't sell any pieces of props, costumes, models, puppets or sets. The props represent film history and are part of the studios' treasure. This includes, for example, the costumes for The Great Escape (1966), which was shot in the forest area around the studios. However, they are willing to lend pieces for exhibitions. And since I have been collecting film props and production materials for an exhibition for a long time, I came into contact with him. If you want, I can send you Mr. Hissia's email address, of course as a PM and without guaranteeing that he is still in charge. The contact was at least 10 years ago.

This movie has a special place in my heart as it was one of three movies I saw in the theater with my mom. The other two were "Time Bandits" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". Anyway, we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
I pulled an all nighter with Barry Longyear (the novelist who penned short story and the excellent book that followed) in the hallway of a Hilton at a Denver Worldcon, with a good supply of beer. He has since gone sober (I hardly partake). It was one of the more interesting things I've ever done at a science-fiction convention. Just love this movie. The Enemy Papers is a novel that explores the early Drac civilization and the years following the events in Enemy Mine. A wonderful read.
Loved this flick as a kid. It sorta has gotten forgotten to history…I never see it played on movie channels today, I guess maybe they played the piss out of it back in the 80s on HBO. Like Dan, I watched almost every time it was on.
I watched this a whole bunch of times on First Choice Super Channel as a kid in Toronto in the 80s. Loved it. And, as you said, if I see it playing, I have to stop and watch it.
Saw this in the theater Loved it. I'm sad that it didn't do what it should have done. But it was released against the Color Purple, Spies like us, and Rocky IV. It had no chance. Thank you for keeping it positive. Thanks for that.
A simple, character driven story full of special effects and makeup but not reliant on effects to drive the story. Criminally underrated, and one of the most watched films on HBO in my youth.
I love the movie it also has a special meaning for me. My wife went into labor while we were watching it for the first time I was thinking lets name him Zammis but I decide against it he would probably hate me when he grew up.
Growing up in Munich in the 80s, I rememeber running through the exhibition sets at the Bavaria Filmstadt. You could go from Das Boot straight to the space station of Enemy Mine to Falcor, seeing the models from all those films (at least at that time the ship models where exhibited in the space station set area), the pond, etc. It was Peterson's world. Around 1990 (I was maybe 13) my friends and I went with my video camera and wanted to film in the space station set our own scenes for our own movie, but it was so full of tourists.
One of my favorite movies for me, and my wife's. One of many that we own. I always like the end for the emotional outcome between Lou's offspring Jamme and Dennis as uncle. Of course him saving all the Draks and the scene where he was on the Drak planet. Never listen to a critics myself. I saw it when it was on HBO at 25 lol.
There is another fully painted Drac (Jerry) head in existence. An old ILM co-worker/buddy of mine who also worked at CWI (Chris Walas Incorporated) back in the day has it in his personal collection out here in San Anselmo California...!
I was a kid in the 80's and saw this film in a completely empty theater. It was the same theater I saw Star Wars in but I loved this movie even though I was just 10 years old and on my own in the entire cinema. The visuals and soundtrack were so fantastic and the story was so embracing!
I remember watching this in the 80's - got it from the video store (remember those?) Thinking we were going to watch a crappy movie. Oh how wrong we were - it was an amazing movie that had depth, a decent story line, well acted and captivated all of us watching it.
I saw this the first week it played at the movie theatre, with my girlfriend at the time. In choosing the film, I think she must have liked Dennis Quaid because I didn’t know what it was about beforehand. We both enjoyed it.
I've always thought Dennis Quaid would have been the perfect replacement for Jan Michael Vincent on the set of Airwolf, when Jan began to lose to his inner demons. Dennis and Jan shared exactly the same handsomeness and machismo-ic qualities that would have allowed Dennis to fit very well in the Airwolf universe; even looking similar in appearance, even close to the same age. (He should have been cast as Stringfellow's brother, St. John). But, no - the network executives decided to do the abysmal Season 4. To borrow your line (with a tone of contempt/sneer): "Studio executives." BTW, you were in England when I was visiting friends Russia this summer; returning about the same time.
This is a film I have not watched in years but like you, whenever it was on, I was watching it. Just think how many of us were watching this on HBO at the same time. I liked Robot having a bit to say!
I read that in the scene that a child-sized doll made up in full Drac makeup was used for some scenes involving Zammis. One scene was when Willis picks up Zammis and runs through their tiny house with him held high in the air. The scene begins with us seeing the child actor portraying Zammis, then a hidden edit cuts to Willis running with the doll held up high.
Yeah, this comes from a time when originality and creativity were still seen as being virtues in Hollywood and risk taking was also a thing. Wow I have loved this movie ever since my brother and I saw it in the theater together. It is a GREAT FREAKING movie and I am STUNNED to hear how horribly it performed at the box office‼️‼️
Way back in the 90's I visited Bavaria Filmstadt in Munich. They had some props and costumes from Enemy Mine on display, also from Das Boot, The Neverending Story, Stargate and Alien. They also had a full size replica of Falcor that you could ride in and they filmed you as you did. Great Studio tour too.
One of my all time favorites. This film has a special place in my heart. It's the only time my late father took me to dinner and then to the cinema to see Enemy Mine for my birthday where it was just my father and me. A special father and son moment in my life. I'll nevet forget it.

But it was heavily promoted in the Video stores at the time of the home video release . I’ll never forget that poster of Dennis Quaids face in that space helmet. So, so glad you’ve done a video on it. Many thanks for making this. 👍👍 btw. I’ve never made that connection with the word “mine” and the mine sequence. I always understood it as “my enemy” . Also, Lou Gosset jnr knocked it out of the Park with his performance, as did Dennis Quaid.
@MoviesMusicMonsters good choice. This is one of those movies that brings back memories. People our age had a good childhood, no CGI as such, movies relied of actual special effects, and that sometimes forgotten about - good story line. Now going back further.....................whatever happened to Jason and the Argonauts
How cool is this. Just watched this a couple of weeks ago. Great flick, with a lot of overtones of Robinson Crusoe on Mars (which would also be a great subject for a future video!).
The book was even more interesting as it followed on from when Davidge went to the Drac homeworld to find Zammis, and the trials it took fom him to appear before the council to recite Zammis's ancestry. Zammis was essentially abandon on Drac - orphans with nobody to recite their ancestry were essentially discarded individuals. Non of Jerry's family wanted anything to do with Zammis - believing he had been tainted by a Human. The key part was that although Davidge could recite Zammis's lineage - the council was not required to actually listen too it and could leave the room. Meaning that Zammis would have no part in Drac society. Davidage seeing the council start to leave asked if the council would "Honor him by hearing Zammis's ancestry". Faced by leaving and acting dishororably, or staying and listening - they stayed. Although several of the council members had themselves voluentarly sterilised so that the taint of this act would not be passed down to their generations. Books are SO much more fun and add layers that the movies cannot show.
I saw this when it came out at the theater, and I loved it. I was always impressed with Lou Gossett's performance as the alien! Have this in my collection.
I remember when we first got cable TV. Had a little converter box that sat on top of the set. Still had to get up and push the button to change channels. But this movie was like one of the core building blocks of HBO programming. Came on like twice a day, every day for four years. Musta watched it 100 times. Enjoyed it every time.
@@Atlanta_Cyclist This box only had 22 channels if l remember right. If you held in two certain buttons at the same time you could kinda pick up the Playboy Channel lol
@@FoulOwl2112 that’s what I’m talking about! We had to wedge a piece of cardboard behind the dial to hold it between channel selections to get the good stuff. The Playboy Channel was Channel 30 so we called it “Dirty-30”. Good times!

@MoviesMusicMonsters good choice. This is one of those movies that brings back memories. People our age had a good childhood, no CGI as such, movies relied of actual special effects, and that sometimes forgotten about - good story line. Now going back further.....................whatever happened to Jason and the Argonauts
Thanks so much for watching! Jason and the Argonauts is on my extremely long list for the future :) Cheers, Dan
@@MoviesMusicMonsters keep that list growing my friend............so many great movies that people need to be reminded of.
How cool is this. Just watched this a couple of weeks ago. Great flick, with a lot of overtones of Robinson Crusoe on Mars (which would also be a great subject for a future video!).
I definitely have that one on my list.
@@MoviesMusicMonsters Can't wait to see that one, Dan.
COOL review, lov to see one on Battle beyond the stars!
Thanks for watching! On my extremely long list for the future :) Cheers, Dan
Great movie. Kinda similar to Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Hope you cover that movie as well Dan.
It sure is! Part of my list of future videos :)
This was one of my favorite movies 😊
This movie reminded me of the final episode of Battlestar 1980 where Starbuck is stuck with a Cylon.
I saw this when it came out at the theater, and I loved it. I was always impressed with Lou Gossett's performance as the alien! Have this in my collection.
Hanger 18 is one of my all time favorites!! I watched that VHS all the time!!!
Push the button?! I got you beat on that… we had to turn a single dial and if I recall it only had 32 or 36 channels on it.
Good times!
One of my all time favorite movies. Thanks Dan!
