      So the potato worked, you just put way too much salt into the soup.
      I also noticed that you glued the "donut" stamp together different to what you showed before.

      Barry, Why didn't you put 1/3 of the soup in a pan for the salty potato hack? Then you would at least have some unsalted soup left.

    • @amandaribofpalmetto

      You can make caramel from condensed milk in a slow cooker. Peel the label, do not open the can. Place can in slow cooker. Cover with water. Cook on low 8 hours. Then let remove from water, let it cool enough to handle and open. Tada overnight Dulce de leche caramel.

    Need to grease ladle before you put egg in so it won't stick! Potato hack works if soup is too salty but not if you add a full shaker worth!!

    • @pyrotfd
      @pyrotfd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      also, you should fill water to the soup and not cook it down... if you concentrate it to smaller amounts the salty taste won't get weaker...

    • @maxximumb
      @maxximumb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Also when testing the hack, don't use the WHOLE bowl of soup. Just use some in a smaller pan, then you have some unsalted soup left.

    We’ve never done caramel from condensed milk in the microwave, but we used to take the can of condensed milk (unopened) and boil it on medium-high for 2 hours while we made the dessert and it made the perfect smooth caramel sauce, as long as you’re careful opening the can once you’ve boiled it ‘cause it got insanely hot.

  • @CaribbeanPonyGirl

    The potato hack works, we’ve done it for years! My theory as to why it didn’t work was two fold. First off your ratio of potatoes to salt was off. For the quantity of salt you added you needed more potatoes. This helps if you’ve over salted by a little when seasoning, not if you put half the container of salt into the soup. The other thing I notice was you actually reduced the soup as well. Reducing it will also increase how salty something tastes. 😁

    The best "hack" for not crying when you chop onions is to just store your onions in the fridge! Popping them in the fridge or freezer for a bit doesn't work. The salt trick is for reasonable amounts of oversalty. If you accidentally doubled the salt your recipe called for, it could fix that. But you put a huge amount of salt in. You'd need to use an entire bag of potatoes and days of cooking to soak that much out. And there'd be no way to avoid tasting like potato after that.

(8) now pig out on delicious garlic bread!!! The steam makes it perfect.

    My mum makes a cheat's caramel that's similar to the caramel hack you guys did, but made in the pan and stirred as it cooks. Works perfectly every time!

    You can put the can in a pot of water and boil it, can remember how long but it turns to Carmel.

    The caramel one can work if you have patience. Boil in microwave and stir. Repeat about 20 times (takes 10 seconds per boil). It will thicken up like caramel, but won't brown.

    Tip for the poaching hack: Try putting the lid on (thus clamping the ladle in place, and trapping steam that will help the top cook)

    I believe for the ladle egg trick you ARE supposed to let the water in just a little bit, but not deep enough that the egg floats out. I saw Alton Brown do it with glass ramekins in the bottom of a cooking pot ages ago, and I think he had the water just like a milimeter or two higher than the top of the ramekin edges.

    Another great video! I'm going back through your playlist to see if I have missed any other videos. I have always been told that you add potatoes to reduce the over salted soup. I think you may have put too much extra salt in. I know it works for slightly over salted food. I just hard boiled an 18 pack of eggs. I am going to try the meatball hack with the carton.

      The smell is what makes you teary not your eyes

    • @slimkt
      @slimkt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Nour Ali Not necessarily. The enzymes and amino acids in the onion react and form a gas which then reacts with the substance that keeps your eyes lubricated and irritates the tear ducts. However, since your olfactory nerves are so close to your tear ducts, breathing the gas in through your nose can contribute to the watery eyes. If you want to stop this from happening, you need a complete seal around your eyes, which is why normal glasses won’t work.

      You need contacts, that's what Barry was on about is that Mrs. B always wears contacts which protects her eyes so she doesn't cry 0:

    You freeze them 'nions ,mate. Then you slit their carcasses. It's a win win.freezin your tears away... Or if using a gadget, use a manual hand cranked chopper. Worth it mate.

    My brother has made microwave caramels using sweetened condensed milk, for years. I don't know how he does it, but it works great.

    You can make a caramel pie filling in the crockpot. Take the tin(condensed milk) with the paper off and put it in the crockpot and fill with water. leave it on low for 9 hours. It makes the best caramel pie ever!!! Pour it in a pie crust and add whipped cream! It's super easy!!

    For the condensed milk one: It Works If you cover the tin in water inside a pressure pan. (but for your sake please take off the paper that wraps the tin) We actually do this a Lot in Brasil. Its called doce de leite!

    You can boil a closed sweetened condensed milk can for 20 min and that's caramel ;)
    leave the can on the side (so it rolls on itself and make sure is always submerged
    You can also buy a caramel can ;)
