The character "Alex Mercer" defined what I enjoyed so much about him especially in Prototype 2; his jacket, hoodie and overall clothing design. In no. 2, Radical did such an amazing job capturing that scary element to Alex when James was forced to confront him in the Alley way and when he charged him and Alex grabbed him by his tendrils, that part legit freaked me out b/c of the "Squeezing" and "Choking" sounds Heller made. I try to carry his looks throughout the games I play that allow personal character customization.

even if recent games look more and more alike, those old games that made our days still exist
sure they're not relevant anymore, since a decade or two, but now that they're old, they're cheap or easy to crack
if you liked an old game more than a new game, just go play the old game xD

One thing this game did (mostly) very well, which got lost in more recent games,
is the 3rd person camera adjusting distance from the playing character dynamically,
depending on the enemies' position and the action in general.
So many 3rd person games with problems in the camera department:
developers should take some inspiration from this title, imho.

Prototype had the same core as Manhunt did, where it was almost a depraved kind of fun to see how much destruction you could cause. Just the mayhem tbh, getting a new power in Prototype was being told there were no laws for 6hrs and it was the same with Manhunt. I went back and played it again recently. And honestly its better than i remembered. I think it was so over the top and chaotic that i don't remember taking in alot of the details they added. And for the 2000s it had alot of neat stuff. Your blades could chop people to bits, enemies had a good variety of attacks or intelligence, the speed/parkour/combat effects really managed to match its energy and and really made a statement. And one thing i was really surprised about was the ai vehicle physics. When the ai goes crazy trying to get away from you they really feel like they're terrified. So much so they run red lights and t-bone other cars or go off road to get around traffic. But if you haven't noticed it you should take a look at their crash physics. Obviously the cosmetic damage isn't anything more than youd expect from an older game but the wrecks actually look like what it should look like. For its time its honestly pretty impressive concisering everything else going on. So much so i chased people in a tank for an hour when i first noticed it lol

The Prototype franchise has been close to my heart and always will be. TH-camr - Whitelight has actually made detailed videos about the first and second games and also a video about what the third game could be. Sad that the studio was dissolved internally. Holding on to a semblance of hope that this franchise comes back if the Microsoft merger goes through and they realize that there is still a community of people who want more prototype. Fingers crossed!
    EDIT (14th October 2023):
So yesterday, the CMA approved the merger and the deal has finally closed! Xbox released a new trailer for the merger and if you stop at 1:10 in the video, you can see that they included Alex.
When I saw this, I lost my mind!
I wrote the original comment, I never thought we would come this far - not only did the merger go through but we also got proof that Xbox has Prototype on it's mind. The franchise has been dormant for almost a decade and now, just like Alex reforms himself at the end of the first game, it is time for Xbox to bring back Mercer - be it a remake or a third entry. It will be HUGE. Again Fingers crossed!

I loved both games. The fluidity of the combat and that enhanced mobility was so much fun. The sprinting, super jumps, wall-running and gliding was so satisfying. Jumping off skyscrapers to divebomb fortifications and unleash AoE destruction was cool.
The stealth mechanics were also good. Like if you impersonated an officer you call in air strikes or tell the soldiers that one of them is infected so the rest would shoot him.

What also made Prototype 1 memorable, was the New York City based map. Which was perfect for this kind of mayhem.
The release timing was also great. With it being released after GTA 4, which saw an increase in fans of open world games. That gotten lots of GTA 4 fans to be also interested in Prototype. I converted some of my friends to become a PC gamer due to GTA 4 and Prototype. Which on PC you can run both games with mods to improve the graphics and other gameplay elements.
It's actually a shame you didn't mention any that.

God, I’ve been playing through Prototype 1 for the last few weeks, not really doing the story all that much but playing around in the open world when I have the time. I recommended it to a friend recently, (and actually bought it for him on Steam and scheduled it to send on his birthday) and to think, it all started with me looking at a list of “Reverse Horror Games” a few years back after finishing Carrion and wanting more. I’m so happy that I discovered this game, and I’m glad you guys did a video on it so other people can as well.

The first Prototype game is one of my favorites. As Alex Mercer we are made not to care for the city, we only save it out of self preservation. I didn't much like prototype 2 for it's change in the story wanting us to care for Heller's journey and kid while causing insane destruction, trying to give the uncaring nature of the first with the level destruction but all of it is toward the military and the virus. We were conditioned not to care for the city in the first game then are forced to care about it and some guy's family in the next. Sure mechanically it is better than the first but story and theme, it isn't. But it is an easy game to get all the trophies/achievements which I did in the re-release of them on ps4. I loved the way they told more of the background story in prototype one, through consuming seemingly random civilians and soldiers. It was so interesting to me, and the idea of some other, just like Mercer if not more so than him was out there in the Midwest I believe, or closer to Cali.. I don't recall, it's been a while. But to me there was so much potential to follow the first game. Sucks we may never see it again. But I am glad to have it as is, even if I don't much like the second one, it's still enjoyable with how destructive you can be to the enemy vehicles and the environment. Especially when using the tendrills, those are hella fun.

Prototype has got to be one of my favorite games from my child hood and to this day on my top 10. It’s truly such a timeless game, it plays so well for the era it was released in. I personally believe that we need more games like it with todays technology. I don’t care about all the extra features and screens and menus. I really just want a simple open world game that’s chaotic but fun at the same time and I think prototype was able to execute simplicity and chaos so well into the same game there may not be another game like the two.

Man, Prototype was my favorite video game back then. I didn’t have a PS3 until I was just about 14 or 15, but it was one of the first games I bought as soon as I did. Even before that, I’d watch TH-cam videos of the series all the time. Both games were amazing in their own right. The first was a phenomenal story, and while they might’ve bungled that story in the 2nd, the gameplay never disappointed. I miss you Prototype. I miss the sequel we could’ve gotten but never did.

Had a bunch of credit in my local second hand electronics store. Had a PS3, but only played a game once in 2 weeks or so for an hour, just because wasn't all that interested in games at the time. Was 13 years old. Saw Prototype 2, for cheap. Brought it home. Fast forward to today. Am 21 now. And a certified Gamer™.
In short, this game shaped my interest in the wider world of gaming, and I am so glad that I bought it that one fateful day. Games have brought me so much happiness and great memories, both while playing single player story driven games, as well as competitive multiplayer games with my friends.

Extreme sports, extreme skateboard bails, extreme violence haha. I also thought I looked REALLY cool when I wore my hoodie because of this game. I have photographic evidence, I did not.
Prototype was a big deal to me because it was extreme, and I loved Spider-Man 2 on PS2 so when I got to play prototype it felt like I was playing an evolution of Spider-Man. It also hit right at the same time that parkour was really popular so to me it was the coolest game ever

The main thing I loved about prototype was the shape-shifting aspect. The game did a really good job at letting you abuse that power in stealth scenarios while also having to be careful to not show your powers around enemies. Iirc even just jumping while disguised would make enemies hostile because obviously a normal human doesn't have an 8 ft vertical.
Prototype just felt like this perfect mix of Spiderman and GTA in an apocalyptic sci-fi setting while also not falling into a cliche storyline. Like you said, the game was just extremely fun. The gameplay was smooth, combat was easy, controls were fine, and it had rpg aspects.
